2. Teaching Philosophy
It is my belief that instruction in the humanities is essential to maintaining a
civil society. We judge ancient civilizations by the quality and skill of their
artistic endeavors and the knowledge of aesthetics helps individuals see the
wonder of nature and experience of being alive to this day. I believe it is
important to make the subject applicable and relevant to today's students by
having them seek out aesthetic elements and principles in their own lives
and presenting to them the ways that other individuals and societies through
the many millennia have found inspirations in their worlds. I believe very
strongly that the same principles, elements and working practice found in
artistic pursuits are valid and can be applied to other endeavors. It is the very
same creative problem solving, approach, and attitude that makes a
business or relationship a success which also guides the successful artist. It
comes down to what one of my great teachers told me about talent. He said,
“Talent requires three basic components that the individual must hold; an
open mind, good work ethic, and sincere interest in the subject.” Sure some
people learn things better than others or have had life times worth of
practice, but it is not something you either have or do not have and everyone
started somewhere. Helping students over come their limiting horizons in the
arts and showing them that they too have the potential to have ideas and
make works as great as anyone who has ever lived has ever made or
thought is what keeps me in the arena of education. To me it is bringing the
world to a better understanding, respect and appreciation of all creation and
consciousness one person at a time. I offer the student confidence to act and
talk about what they have learned while instilling in them the importance of
the perpetuation and preservation of the discoveries of the ones that have
come before us in hopes we can make our own discoveries.
