Step 1: Please be sure to fill in the student’s name in the header above.
Step 2: Writing your recommendation (in the space here).
*This document is configured for Garamond 11 font. The left and right margins are each
set at 1.25". Page 1 has a 2.5" top margin with the Choate header. Subsequent pages will have blank
headers with a 1" top margin. If necessary, you may need to adjust your margins to 1” left and right.
Please do not make the margins any tighter since it may compromise the template.
*Try to write one-page letters of recommendation. From the college perspective, a one-page
letter is ideal; one page plus a paragraph or two is also okay. More than a page and a half will
tax the admission readers and they may skim and miss your most important points.
Note: A one-page recommendation with 1.25” margins is roughly 550-575 words; a one-page
recommendation of 1” margins is roughly 625-650 words.
Step 3: Convert Word Document to PDF. In “Save as…” – under “Format” – save document as a
PDF (which will ensure the formatting will be correct during upload).
Step 4: Upload to Naviance by following the “How to Submit a Letter of Recommendation”
instructions.
