which rate the ethical standards and legal abilities of

an ethical standards rating have been found to adhere to

3. Martindale-Hubbell Ratings
• Ability ratings (on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is the highest) consider a
lawyer’s abilities in five areas: analytical, communication, judgment,
legal knowledge, and experience. The reviewers are lawyers and
judges, typically from a similar area of practice, who are in a
position to rate the lawyer being reviewed. Martindale-Hubbell
gathers responses, and after validating the submissions, display the
results online.
After lawyers have been evaluated on their legal ability, they will
receive one of three ratings; AV (the highest rating), BV (reflects an
excellent rating), and Rated (meets the “very high”) criteria.
