Oral health issues affect over half of the world's population according to the Global Burden of Disease Study. Tooth decay is the most prevalent oral condition worldwide and oral health issues are the fourth most expensive medical condition to treat, with over $110 billion spent annually in the United States alone. Risk factors for oral diseases include an unhealthy diet high in sugar, poor oral hygiene, excessive alcohol consumption, and tobacco use.
