Observation Report
25 June 2012

   A. Research Question: Which gender was more prone to violate the ENTRANCE and
EXIT policy of the LS Bookstore by going out the ENTRANCE door?

   B. Observational Setting: LS Bookstore area (in iStudio, in Bo’s Coffee, on the floor,
      near the LS Bookstore sofa)

   C. Time of Observation: 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm

   D. Behavior Observed: Violation

          a. Defined as:
                 i. People who exited the entrance door at least a body part, like the foot,
                    or the whole body
ii. People who attempted (touched the handle but backed out, went
beyond the alarm sensors and turned around)

   E. Mode of Recording Observations:

          a. Listing the people who violated, and those who did not, on paper (as
well as taking into account gender)
          b. Example of mode:

                     Violation (exited thru ENTRANCE door)
                       Males Females
                1+2+2+5+3+1+1+1 3+1+1+1+2+1+2+1
                +2+… +4+…

                    *This is an example
*Numbers greater the one signify those who violated in groups
Number of people who exited the right way
                    Males Females
             4+1+1+1+3+4+1+2 7+5+3+4+1+1+1+2
             +3… +1+1+3+…

                 *This is an example
*Numbers greater the one signify those who violated in groups
*Total number for both males and females here are much greater than
                 those who violated
*This table enables us to compute for the percent violation

F. Results

      a. Total number of people who exited properly: 553
              i. Males: 287
             ii. Females: 266
      b. Total number of people who violated: 62
              i. Males: 33
             ii. Females: 29
      c. Percent violation of males and females: 10.09%
              i. Males: 10.31%
             ii. Females: 9.83%
*Note that a and b are average results from each groupmember’s results

   Conclusion:

Both males and females are equally prone to violate the ENTRANCE and EXIT
policy of the LS Bookstore by going out the ENTRANCE door.

G. Discussion Questions

      a. What difficulties did you encounter in observing and recording behavior?
           i. Difficulties include time, effort, patience, as well as energy.
Though tedious, it was fun watching people violate without them
knowing. In fact, we were able to snap some shots of people who
               violated in action.
      b. What did you learn about the behavior you observed?
            i. We learned that both males and females are equally prone to
violate the ENTRANCE and EXIT policy of the LS Bookstore by
               going out the ENTRANCE door.
