- 2. What is electronic media ? Electronic media is any media that takes advantage of electronic technology. Electronic media in the workplace is of an especially critical nature now versus its inception several decades ago. "The Internet is inescapable. Employees use it at home, at work and they carry it around with them on their laptops, Smartphones and other devices (Shea & Strange 2012, p.1)".
- 3. Why and how we use it Our dependency on electronic media has been no higher at any point in history than it is now. There are benefits (and disadvantages) of using electronic media over print media. The main disadvantage to electronic media and particularly with its dispersion on the internet is that once broadcast it is "irretrievable"(Shea & Strange 2012, p.2). Employees' use of the Internet and, in particular, social media sites such as FaceBook, poses risks which employers need to acknowledge, understand and manage (Shea & Strange 2012, p.2).

- 5. Rules to Follow & Company Policy An electronic media policy should prohibit employees from disclosing confidential business information. This policy should prohibit employees from using the company computer to defame the company, employees, managers, customers or vendors There is no right to privacy on company computer hardware. The company reserves the right to inspect company equipment and monitor employees' internet use.

- Electronic media helps contribute to the success of a business. There are many forms of electronic media that is used in the workplace. Computers, e-mail, voicemail, cell phones, instant messaging and the Internet have efficiently made it easier to complete everyday work tasks (Electronic Workplace. n.d.). We use all of these forms for communication and in different ways. These forms of electronic media have made it easier and more convenient to do work outside of the office, and all around the world. When communicating, it needs to be decided which form of electronic media will most efficiently and effectively get the message across to the receiver. Below you will find the different forms of electronic media and their definitions. Computers- “An electronic device for storing and processing data, typically in binary form, according to instructions given to it in a variable program” (Oxford Dictionaries. n.d.) E-mail - “The system of sending messages by electronic means from one computer to another” (Oxford Dictionaries. n.d.) Voicemail- “A centralized electronic system that can store messages from telephone callers”(Oxford Dictionaries. n.d.) Cell phones- “A telephone with access to a cellular radio system so it can be used over a wide area, without a physical connection to a network”(Oxford Dictionaries. n.d.) Instant messaging- “A message sent via the Internet that appears on the recipient’s screen as soon as it is transmitted” (Oxford Dictionaries. n.d.) Internet-“A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols”(Oxford Dictionaries. n.d.) Using electronic media made really advanced the way business is done. It makes the workplace run smoother and has enhanced communication. - If you are about to perform an interview, then you should notify the applicants that you intend to use the internet searches as part of the hire process. You should use electronic media only after the initial screening, or an in-person interview of the applicant. To ensure and protect yourself that you are relying upon accurate information, you might want to ask the applicant about disqualifying information (comparing the info you found on the internet to the answers of the applicant) before making a final decision to provide yourself with an opportunity clarify the information. (Strange, P. 2012,). One rule of thumb is to designate a co-worker, maybe a non-decision maker, such as a human resources representative, to conduct the search for you. Keep in mind, this individual has to be a trained person who knows how to run an appropriate search and should have the capability to be able to screen out information that cannot lawfully be considered in the decision-making process. This will ensure that the hiring manager receives only cleaned and filtered information based on job-related criteria. You need to avoid relying on legal, off-duty conduct such as political or recreational activities as part of your basis for a decision not to hire. These types of practices are protected by law. You also need to identify a legitimate, non-discriminatory reason with supporting documentation for the no-hire decision. (Strange, P. 2012,).
