2. 1. Food Groups
Food groups can be classificated according to:
Origin: Animal or vegetal
Organism functions: Energetic, structurals, regulatory…
Depending on their nutrient content: milk, meat and fish, vegetables…
Now, we will follow a sort out, depending on their nutrient content:
Milk and dairy products.
Meat, fish, eggs and vegetables.
Patotoes, cereals and vegetables.
Vegetables.
Fruits. **
Fats, oils and nuts.
Sweets and sugar sweets.
4. 2. Fruits: Characteristics
It is a food group that has got vegetal origin, and it does not contribute with
much nutrients, due to they have a high content of water.
They are characterized by:
Important source of minerals and vitamins.
They contain a percentage of water between 50-90%.
They contain a 10% of simple carbohydrates (except bananas and figs).
They have not much content in fats and proteins. The exceptions are coconut
and chocolate.
They have not got as fiber as vegatables and green vegetables.
They have good digestibility.
5. 2. Fruits: Classification
Fruits can be classification according to the number of flowers where they
come.
Infructescenses: Come from different flowers like for example pineapple, fig,
blackberry…
Simple fleshy fruits: Come from only a type of flower and they are formed by the
ovary. We can destacate:
o Berry: Avocado, persimmon, banana, strawberry, grapes…
o Boll: Litchi.
o Drupe: Apricot, cherry, coconut, peach…
o Hesperidium: Lime, lemon, mandarin orange, orange…
Complex fruits: They come from only a type of flower, and in their formation
participate the ovary and other organs. We can destacate:
o Knob: apple, pear, loquat…
o Pepo: Melon and water melon.
6. 3. Derivatives:
There are a lot of fruit derivates that can put together through them:
Nectars: Fresh and natural juices which a glucose syrup is added to them. They
have got less fiber than the others.
Natural juices: There are natural juices that are conservated with any physical
treatment. They are fermentable.
Fresh fruits juices: There are juices produced through healthy fruits which they
are washed and clarified. They are not fermentable. We obtain them through
an industrial process.
7. 3. Derivatives:
Marmalade: It is a plummy product made by fresh fruits. It is triturated and
cooked with sugar until they achieve that plummy pasta. Marmalade usually is
produced through mature fruit which is not able to be presented at lunch.
Confiture: Is elaborated with a unique fruit, cooking itself. The main difference
witn marmalade is that confiture has got whole pieces of fruit.
Jallies: It is cooked with gelatinous consistency. And also is made through fresh
fruits juices with a big amount of sugar.
8. 4. Basic Advise
We must include vegetables and green vegetables in our daily diet,
because they are essential foods. And moreover they contain big amounts
of vitamins and minerals.
Experts recommend eating at leat 3 pieces of fruits per day, because they
are rich in C Vitamin.
It is recommendable not to eat the same fruits every day, because each of
them have got different nutrients, and consequently all are important to
take a healthy diet.
As OMS said, we should eat at least, five pieces of fruits and vegetables per
day.
Another recommendation is eating citric fruits in mornings and sweet fruits in
other moments.
We must eat fresh fruit as well as we can.
