damage. A failing or failed tensioner or idler pulley
bearing often causes timing belt failure. That’s why
each kit comes with the right components, plus detailed
installation instructions specific to each application.
With PowerGrip™kits, it’s not necessary to multi-source
components, look up several different manufacturers,
or present your customer with several cartons contain-
ing different parts. Deliver in one carton with all the
components required to do a thorough job.
(Kits can contain multiple belts, tensioners, idler and ten-
sioner pulleys, depending on the application. Kits do not
contain hydraulic tensioning cylinders or tensioning springs.)

Timing System Operation
The crankshaft drives the
camshaft(s) and actuates the
valves via a belt or a chain.
The timing belt is widely used
by car manufacturers because
of its advantages over a chain,
namely reduced space, as well
as lighter and quieter running.
Important:
In order to achieve safe and thorough servicing of the engine, we recommend the belt, belt tensioner pulley, and idler pulleys of the timing sys-
tem or the auxiliary drive, all be changed at the same time. It is highly probable that the source of damage to the belt
(too much or too little tension, vibration, high temperature, belt misalignment, etc.) will also have affected the other rotating components of the
system including the belt tensioner and idler pulley. If they are not changed together with the belt, early breakdown may be encountered, result-
ing in serious damage to the engine. It is highly recommended that belt tension be measured using a timing belt tension tester (Gates part
#91000.) See page A12 for more details.
5. A3
Several factors can cause timing belt tensioner or idler failure.
Bearing life is limited by wear, temperature, misalignment, and loss of lubricant. Most of these problems cannot be
readily identified by an inspection, so it is always best to replace the tensioner and/or idlers as part of the timing
belt replacement.
Top reasons to “Replace Belt Tensioner and Idler when Replacing the Timing Belt”
• OE recommends as part of normal preventative maintenance
• Preventative maintenance should address all forms of failure
• After 60,000 miles tensioners are more likely to fail (especially after installation and adjustment of new belt)
• Reduce labor claims and comebacks
• A worn or loose pulley can cause belt problems
• Normal tensions cannot be maintained to assure proper life of replacement belt
• Internal bearing wear is not noticeable
Today’s Timing Belts are Highly Sophisticated
The days of generic timing belts of standard materials and tooth profiles are gone.
Improved new generation belts are providing the extended durability and smoother performance characteristics
required by today’s engines.
Gates leads the world in timing belt technology, assuring customers a replacement belt to match the capabilities of
the original belts.
Tooth Profiles Aren’t Interchangeable
The earliest timing belts had a trapezoidal tooth profile. Competition and more demanding applications led to the development of a curvilinear
profile. This in turn, evolved into a modified-curvilinear profile. Belts with different tooth profiles are not interchangeable.
Gates has the most complete timing belt line available, with more than 250 part numbers. The line includes both neoprene and HSN constructions,
and all three tooth profiles:
Trapezoidal Curvilinear Modified Curvilinear
Positioning Marks for Easy Installation
Gates timing belts have positioning marks to make installation fast and easy. You won’t find
that with many competitive belts, which require you to count individual teeth for correct
belt installation.

Hydraulic Damper Pivot Arm
Several engine manufacturers use a pivot arm in correlation with a hydraulic
damper to tension the belt. This damper uses a piston that pushes a pivot
arm with a pulley, providing the required tension. When re-using the
hydraulic damper the piston will need to be driven back into its cylinder
and locked in place. A vice can be used to
retract the piston. Simply remove the
damper from the engine, place it
between vice jaws and slowly
compress the piston. Once com-
pressed, line up the holes in the
piston with the holes in the
cylinder and insert a pin to hold
the piston in place. The Gates
91010 pin set is a great tool, and
the only tool, created just for
this purpose.
See page A12 for details.
Automatic Spring Loaded Tensioner
Also known as “frictional” tensioner. Manufacturers are increasing their usage
each year because this type of tensioner provides a more consistent belt
tension that can react and adjust to today’s high rev’ing engines.
Gates carries several of these tensioners, many of which were only
available through the OE until now.
Proper installation of these tensioners is critical and
installation instructions must be followed. Once installed,
belt installation is generally very simple. In most cases a hex-
head wrench is used to rotate the tensioner into a position
that permits the belt to slip into place. Once the belt is in
place the tensioner is allowed to return to its relaxed position,
applying the necessary tension.
When replacing any timing component always refer to the vehicle’s
Service Manual or this Gates Timing Belt Replacement Manual for
the most complete timing belt replacement instructions.

Timing Belt System Troubleshooting
One out of every three passenger cars and light trucks use a timing belt to transmit power from the crankshaft to the camshaft(s).
Most 4-cylinder and V-6 engines, as well as a few V-8’s, use a timing belt. The timing belt is critical to the engine because it sets
the engine’s fuel/air and exhaust valves in motion.
There are two basic types of engines using timing belts, conventional and interference. If a timing belt on a conventional type
fails there is generally no additional engine damage, the engine simply can no longer function. However, many engines utilize the
interference design. This design allows for better power and fuel efficiency, but the valve to piston timing is extremely vital.
If the timing belt fails the pistons will collide with valves. This type of failure is one of the most costly repairs to a vehicle.
Whether your customer’s vehicle utilizes a conventional or interference engine, these failures can be avoided by adhering to the
OEM recommended replacement intervals and preventative maintenance. Typically an automaker recommends a timing belt
replacement at about 60,000 miles, but certain make/models require replacement at an earlier or later interval. See replacement
intervals noted in this manual. Also, severe conditions such as towing, aggressive driving and maintenance history need to
be considered.
The most common type of timing belt failure is through a failed bearing within the timing belt system pulley. Below are some
pulley failure modes to help you recognize a failing pulley:
Misalignment: Misalignment can be determined by rotating the pulley. Does it
wobble or is there roughness felt when spinning the pulley? Is the pulley bracket
worn or broken? Has the pulley been installed correctly and all foreign material
(grease, grime) removed from behind the mount? And finally, are all the bolts tightened
to specification?
Locked Pulley: A worn bearing commonly causes a locked or seized pulley. It could
also be a result of improper installation or the pulley coming into contact with
another object. Pulley surface discoloration is a direct result of a locked pulley.
Damaged Pulley Surface: A pitted, cracked, uneven, discolored or chipped pulley
should always be replaced. Foreign material build-up on the pulley surface is also an
issue and should be removed or replace the pulley.
Noise: Noise is a result of a failing bearing or improper belt tension. Replace the
pulley if the bearing is failing. In the case of improper tension, the use of a tension
meter is always recommended. Gates Timing Belt Tensioning Tester, part number
91000, is an excellent and simple tool for this task. See page A12 for details.
Damaged Pulley Bearing Seal: Grease leaking from the front or back of a pulley is
an indicator of the bearing seal being damaged and the bearing will soon fail.
Many times you can diagnose a timing belt system problem by looking at the belt’s appearance.
The chart on page A8 lists several of the conditions you may find.

Timing Belt Troubleshooting Guide
Synchronous belts have been used on automotive camshaft
drives for more than 20 years. Our belts will give OEM
equivalent service if the following points are observed.
Storage
Belts should be kept in their original packaging until needed.
Store in an environment which avoids:
• Temperature extremes
• Direct sunlight
• High humidity
• Contamination by oil, water, chemicals, etc.
Handling
It is important that belts are not crimped during handling
since this could seriously damage the tensile members and
lead to premature failure.
Installation Tips
IMPORTANT: Avoid crimping the belt when installing it on
pulleys — no tools should be used on the belt.
Replace and properly refit timing cover to prevent drive
contamination by foreign matter.
Replacement
Follow vehicle manufacturer’s instructions regarding belt
replacement intervals. If the belt is removed, then a new belt
should be installed. If engine is being repaired and belt is near
OEM recommended replacement interval, it’s a good time to
replace the belt.

Free Running or Interference Engine?
You and Your Customers Need to Know.
Automobile engines can be classified as either Free-Running or Interference, depending on what occurs if piston/valve
synchronization is lost.
As illustrated below, in the free-running engine with the crankshaft still moving, there is enough clearance between the
valve and piston, even if the cam stops with a valve fully open.
However, interference engines usually sustain damage if synchronization is lost. As illustrated, disrupted synchronization
allows the piston and valve to collide causing damage and very expensive repairs for the vehicle owner. Damage can
occur to valves, pistons, or heads, and in some cases, completely ruin the engine. Most import (with higher compression
engines) and most car and light truck diesel engines are interference. To avoid costly engine repairs, follow the auto man-
ufacturers’ mileage replacement recommendations or we recommend timing belt replacement at around 60,000 miles.
NOTE: For your convenience, interference engines have been footnoted with a star in the application listings of
this publication and are noted in the index. This lets you easily identify them, and pass that information
on to your customers.
Since timing belts are inside the engine they tend to be an out-of-sight, out-of-mind item and are seldom thought of as
a part of routine maintenance. Here are some questions to ask customers that will help sell belts and protect the cus-
tomer from expensive repairs:
1. Did you buy the car new? If yes, they’ll know if the belt has ever been replaced.
2. Did you buy the car used? If so, they won’t know if the belt has been replaced. This is a flag for the customer to
get the belt checked, replaced or at least be aware that he has a timing belt.
3. How many miles are on the vehicle? Generally belts should be replaced at around 60,000 miles or less. Our
Timing Belt Replacement Recommendations Booklet is an excellent tool for determining replacement intervals.
4. Have you ever replaced the timing belt? If the answer is yes or no (and the customer knows the mileage) you can
determine where the vehicle is in the replacement cycle.
Here’s a helpful hint for customers with vehicles within a few thousand miles of the recommended replacement interval.
If they are having any engine repair done, have the timing belt and pulleys checked. If either/or both need replacing, do
it now, along with the other repairs and save time and money.

V- Belt Tension Ranges for Manual Tensioners
Always use a belt tension gauge that indicates static tension, such as the Gates Krikit® Tension Gauge, to deter-
mine proper tension from the Installation Chart. Tension ranges below are for drives requiring single belts. If
multiple belts are needed for a drive, divide tension by number of belts to give per belt tension to be measured.
• Position belt and set tension to the prescribed Installation Tension.
• Run belt for five minutes.
• If belt tension drops below Suggested Tension range, retighten belt to Installation Tension. This will allow the
belt to seat-in and run at Suggested Tension after it has operated under normal driving conditions.
