Writing Process In College Level Writing
Every year, students are required to become more proficient in areas such as math, science, history,
and writing. High school English teachers push students to become better writers so they can be
ready when they get to college. College–level writing is being able to use advanced vocabulary,
developed grammar and rhetorical devices to express ideas accurately and precisely. College–level
writing expects the writer to be able to use higher level vocabulary to express their ideas
accurately and precisely. The first time I was asked to use higher level vocabulary was in sixth
grade, when I tried to use words such as better, bad, sad, etc. Using advanced words, such as
miserable and cruel in place of the common words sad and bad, enhanced my writing and turned
my essays from ordinary to exceptional. When the writer use advance vocabulary, the reader is
more engaged with the writing and can understand it better. For example, the sentence "The dog
walked happily to his owner", would sound stronger if the writer used the word joyfully instead. It
sounds stronger because happily is a commonly used word, so it has lost the appeal that would make
people interested. Using stronger words makes the reader intrigued and wanting to read the essay.
Enhanced vocabulary also improves a person's essays because it makes the writer feel more
confident about her/his writing.
Another aspect of the writing process that is different in college–level writing is that we are
expected to use highly

Reflective Essay on College Writing
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the
semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up
to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually
demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college
has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a
thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the timerestraints are
not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free

I definitely learned a great deal from our discussions about this book. I really did not like it at all
until the class sat down and analyzed the many levels Conrad addressed in his story. I thought the
endless paradoxes in the book, once brought to light, were actually very interesting. My favorite
section, however, was the poetry unit. I really enjoyed the poem ?The Blues? by Billy Collins the
most because of my respect for music. I think Collins really makes a point in his poem about just
how important music is and how it allows people who are very different to connect on many
levels. I also loved ?Love Calls Us to the Things of This World? by Richard Wilbur. The imagery
in this poem was absolutely amazing, and I adored how he made the ordinary things seem mystical
with his words. I loved how the laundry became angels. If only we could look at the world from
that point of view more often, it would be a much happier place.
The criticisms in college have even been somewhat enjoyable and interesting to read. I think I
began to like the stories and poems we read in class more and more as we discussed them and
looked at different authorities? opinions. I found a lot of the information in the databases very
useful. For the Antigone research project, the JSTORS database gave me hundreds of articles
dealing with my topic. I could narrow down what I was looking for and find numerous

everyone that is on that field does there job and sticks to their responsibilities we would be fine. If
the team plays with their heart even when things go bad and not point fingers but instead work as

Instead of giving up we stop there offensive roll at the one yard line. This is when things are most

College Level Writing Style Analysis
Thank you for reading through my online portfolio. I have struggled mightily to grasp the concepts
of college level writing. I believe that I have made progress in becoming a better writer at the
academic level. I hope that you enjoy reading through my papers and I welcome any feedback you
might have.
When I write, it was usually to give directions or to welcome a new player and his or her parents
to the team that I happened to be coaching. It was very informal, but I tried to make sure that there
where no typographical errors and that the formatting was uniform and clean. I believed I was
doing a good job and my was writing was effective. Then I enrolled English 101. Through this
course, I have been challenged immensely, often to...show more content...
That is hard for me to say since I never really had much of a style in the past, but I believe I have. I
can say that I am more aware of the rules in academic writing, like needing to back up any claims
made by citing a credible primary source. I've learned that I need to change my words up to
emphasize what I want to say.
The strategy that I utilized in the past was to make sure that I formatted my paper in a clean way
and that there were no typographical errors. I already knew from working with Microsoft Word
over the years that it is not a good tool to rely on to ensure that there are no spelling or grammar
errors. In addition, I usually have at least another person proofread the paper for me. Proofreading, I
feel, has been the one topic in this course that our teacher has reinforced repeatedly.
My plan on how to improve my writing is simply. I will keep at it, I will not quit, and I will do my
best to absorb as much as I can while receiving the most from this experience. I will continue to
use the resources provided my teacher. I believe Purdue Owl is a very resourceful site that I have
saved because it will help me in future classes in which I may need to write

In chapter three of The Nuts and Bolts of College Writing, Michael Harvey focuses on flow. He
explains consistency of character usage in sentences, additionally with appropriate pronouns and
linking words. In sentences, pronouns should refer to their nouns in a neat fashion. This makes
passages easier to follow, preventing confusion from arising. Furthermore, characters should be used
consistently. The writer controls the flow from one character to another, and they should not be
jumbled. If there are several characters, the sequences should introduce each one methodically.
Punch lines are also important in combining sentences from a familiar start to new information.
Additionally, introductory prepositional phrases are recommended if the

Importance Of College Level Writing
College–level writing is frightening it's basically a wakeup call that you're growing up and
writing essays will probably be applied in whatever you do. But it's important for us students to
know how to write an essay properly, so it can benefit us in our future as students and in our future
careers. It would be difficult for me to say that as a student, that when I first thought of college
writing, I thought you write millions of facts down and call it a day. But college–level writing is a
piece of writing of written work that should grab the reader's attention because as a college writer
your written work should go more in–depth into the assigned topic. There are many examples that a
college level writing piece should include, such as good research, sources must be listed, and the
structure should be logical. Lots of experiences in my life made me realize the definition of college
writing, for instance, writing essays through the years, reading articles, and having my own blog.
The first thing my teachers always tell me when beginning to write an essay is to make sure to grab
the reader's attention. This should be one of the main goals when writing a college–level essay. A
writer should always try to grab a reader's attention, you can do this by having the idea, your
audience has no idea or little information on what you're going to talk about. This can help the writer
provide lots of detail and background information when beginning to write this article. For instance,

Writing Required In College Courses
The writing required in college courses may be different than anything you've encountered afore.
English classes taken in middle school, and sometimes in the early years of high school, provide the
fundamentals, but many students lose these skills over they commence college. In integration, for
nontraditional students who haven't studied English in a while, making the transition to academic

Reflection On My English 101 Experience
Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your
mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The
truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in
the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can
explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses.
Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before
taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and
unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I
struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to
the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class
that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the
whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for
navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I
have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in
English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the

The College Level Writing Course
At the beginning of the class this year, I didn't expect o to well right off the bat of the college
level writing course because I had always struggled with English in middle school through high
school. To my surprise though, I have learned many things this semester and have already used
some of these skills in other papers in other classes I had. Thanks to the help of Sue Oakes, I can
now say proudly that I can actually write a decent paper and feel rather confident about it. Starting
off the year in the English class, I had already messed up the first task. I had forgotten to the to
sample writing so that she could see how our witting skills were and would try to see what type of
work she will have to put into us to make us capable to write a college ready paper. So to start the
semester off I had already one late assignment and thought to myself "great she thinks I will be a
slacker because I already didn't turn in something". Going more I n depth into the first unit, we
had to write a story about ourselves but it had to be a family myth. At the time I was very perplexed
because I had never heard of a family myth before so I had no idea what to write about; so I ended
up writing about those dang cigars. The step by step process really helped me out in writing
papers which I still use for papers now. When I had come to the completion of the paper, I was
very satisfied with the work I had accomplished. This paper was going to be the easy paper though,
but I didn't

College Level Reflection Paper
While registering for a college–level course, last year, I questioned how difficult the class would be.
I had taken a course the previous semester that had covered the basics in business and economy, yet
this would be the first course in English–a topic that I had been told, on many occasions, that I
excelled in. Because of this, I came into this year's English class confident and sure that I would
receive top marks easily. Unfortunately, it was not so. I struggled through several of the assignments
given to me, yet I learned several new techniques and gained insight in what a college–level essay
truly consists of. Because of this class, I learned of the importance of transitions between points, the
importance of reducing wordiness in sentences, and the importance of explaining information and
quotations fully.
Over the course of this class, my essays have changed and improved in the way of transitions. At the
beginning of the semester, I wrote an introductory reflective essay that covered how I felt about
reading or writing. While I enjoyed researching and thinking over the topic thoroughly, the actual
act of writing it went poorly, according to the feedback I received from my teacher. The paper was
riddled with pencil marks describing issues, the most prevalent of these being transitions between
points and paragraphs. I had been previously taught to write a sentence at the end of a paragraph
explaining all that I covered in it, to sum it up. Unfortunately, academic,

Before entering English 1301, I had my doubts about what this class was going to consist of.
Considering this is a college level English class, and a subject I struggled in, my worries were not at
ease. Throughout the year, my understanding and comprehension of the writing process, as well as
how to write different varieties of writing, have strengthened. After partaking in this course, I am
confident I have met the student learning outcomes. After completing my first college level English
class, I would be expected to meet four student learning outcomes. One of those being I could use
rhetorical devices to strengthen my essays. Coming into this course, I did not have a grasp over this
subject and knew it was something I could improve on....show more content...
I have improved my grammar through feedback from my instructor, and workshops I participated in.
There is a significant difference between my writing conventions from the beginning of the year to
my present writing conventions. In my second essay, The Drastic Evolution of Teen Life, I have
noticed many writing convention errors. In this essay I said, "Also with the lack of technology, they
were influenced to be more adventurous and get out of the house and explore things on their own"
(The Drastic Evolution of Teen Life) This sentence is a prime example of faulty sentence structure; it
lacks punctuation in the right places. My third essay, Euthanasia: Condemned by Doctors, has less
errors and shows improvement on these writing conventions. Improvement can be seen in the
sentence, " Euthanasia should not be legal because it is not morally correct, undermines medical
research, and denies patients the final stage of growth"(Euthanasia: Condemned by Doctors). This
shows development on sentence structure, punctuation, and helps gives my essay a polished look.
Without this, errors I may have previously made would be even more

Reflection On College Writing
Reflecting how I write When I graduated high school, I already knew that I wanted to attend
college other than going to the work force. I heard stories about college being fun and it is one of
the greatest accomplishment a person can achieve. So, I began college right after high school. As I
entered college, I learned that I will have to focus more on writing papers than having fun. In high
school my teachers did not prepare me for college essays. I feel like I learned a lot more failing on
my college writing assignment than passing on the essays in high school. Well now I have
approached the end of the semester of college, and I am exhausted from the constant writing
assignments. Although the assignments were difficult like I said it was also helpful. Each
assignment helped me in different ways. The assignments helped me improved with my grammar,
time management, and how to process before I begin writing. In English 1010 I had different types
of writing assignments. I had to write a literacy narrative paper, analysis paper, research paper, and
lastly an autoethnography paper which I am doing now. An autoethnography is when the author
uses self reflects to write about their experiences about writing a paper. English is not the only
subject that I had writing assignments in. I also had to write assignment in my business class. My
English teacher had informed me that I will have to do an autoethnography. So, I used my paper in
my business class to reflect on how I write by

The Importance Of College Level Writing
An area of confusion in the college world is what defines college–level writing. There are many
possible answers to this question. Students may be confused about this issue because they want to
know what is expected of them in their composition classes and the writing that they have to do in
their other classes. All of us want to succeed when we get to college and writing makes up a big part
of the college learning experience since we have to write in every class we have. Excelling in
writing, and especially in writing at the college level, will help students succeed in college because
of all of the writing involved in all of their classes. Before we write our papers however, we need to
learn how to write at the college level and before that what college–level writing is. College–level
writing is something that requires more attention to content and quality than high school level
writing, something that has varying expectations between colleges and professors, and something
that requires the writer to actively participate in their writing to become better.
Some students may believe that the work that they did in high school will be similar to the work
that they do in college, but, "there is no guarantee that students who do well in high school
composition will automatically do well in college composition" (Davies 31). A student that does
excel in their high school writing classes may think that they know how to write at the college level
and that they do not need to further

College Readiness Essay
Determining college readiness is an essential part in determining who will qualify as a good
candidate for admission into a college or a university. The last thing that colleges want is for
students to qualify for admission and drop out, this affects drop out rate and graduation rate.
According Robin Chait and Andrea Venezia (2009), to about 83 percent ofhigh school graduates
enroll in some form of postsecondary education, but only about 52 percent of students complete their
degrees. Further, a very small proportion of students complete a degree in four years–"among
students starting at 'four–year' institutions, only 34 percent finish a B.A. in four years, 64 percent
within six years, and 69 percent within eight and a half years."...show more content...
According to David Conley, readiness for college contains four key principles: key cognitive
strategies, key content knowledge, key self management skills, key knowledge about post and
secondary education. Although college readiness can be measured sing ACT andSATscores, which
developed a college readiness benchmarks to see whether a prospective college student has a
high prospect of success in college courses of English, social sciences, Algebra and biology.
However, if your test scores are not meeting the typical benchmarked standard does that truly
determine I you are ready for college. No. One thing we have to take under deep consideration is
that each student is different and some don't test very well. What happens to a child who has a
really good GPA, high determination and a low test score? College recruits deem that these
children are not college ready. College readiness should be measured with a more natural eye,
because some students may not be good in particular subject areas, however, what would be the
likeness of high school students completing and earning a degree in a field that they enjoy. The
nature of humans is to do things that they enjoy, to read stories that they can relate too, to complete
a task that means a lot to them. This is the natural eye that we should look at college readiness with.
How determined and passionate are the students on furthering their education. How

Effective College Level Writing Strategies Essays
Effective College Level Writing Strategies
When asked about effective writing, many people respond that it is the act of placing the thoughts
together in a logical manner. This response is too narrow because it suggests that effective writing is
only a matter of getting the writing code correct. It also suggests that writing degenerates from the
thought, which is not the case. Although the definitions of effective writing has nothing to do with
effective writing itself, there are various points of effective writing that can be used to achieve
effective writing. In simple terms, an effectively writing material must be preplanned, organized,
revised and properly edited.
In writing, the writer must begin by prewriting. This means the writer...show more content...
Again, organization requires that the body of the writing remains consisted with the claim of the
writer (Murray & Hughes, 2008). This means the writer must not stray from the subject of discussion
but remain consisted with the theme of writing. At the end of the writing, the writer must provide a
conclusion. A conclusion is not considered a distinct paragraph, but is a summary of the main points
made in the article. The conclusion should recap the arguments of the author.
Effective writing requires that articles must be correctly formatted without typos and grammatical
errors. This means an effective writer must proof read the writing once it's done. Proofreading is
very important in writing. Although some people have resorted to using spell–checkers, the best
proofreader remains the writer (Strategies for Essay Writing, 2014). There are some words that
computer programs might assume to be correct when in fact they are not. Thus in order to
produce quality writing, the writer must make sure that all mistakes are corrected and that all
typos are corrected. In college writing, it is also important that the writer knows and avoid
plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious academic offence in most colleges and might lead to academic
probation or even expulsion (Strategies for Academic Writing, 2014). The best way to avoid
plagiarism is by citing all the sources use or

Stress Among College Students Essay examples
College is a time of extreme stress due to societal and parental pressures. College students have
expectations they have to live up to in order to fulfill and satisfy the needs of both their parents and
society. Stress is expressed through a variety of symptoms that can be hazardous to student's physical
and mental health. With such high expectations to do well during college, students may become
sleep deprived, which impairs mental capacity, but sleep deprivation is only one of a vast array of
symptoms. Stress is present in all aspects of life and there are multiple causes of stress, especially,
during the college period which may present itself through many symptoms, but with stress, there are

According to Lupien, McEwan, Gunnar, and Heim (2009), going off to college involves significant
adjustments to their daily routines; sleeping and eating habits, time–management skills, and stress
levels will be altered in one way or another. First–year students have to adjust to the new school
environment, different social settings, and new schedules, all without the help and guidance from
their parents, who have been there for them for eighteen years. Over 30% of college freshman
report that they feel overwhelmed (Klainberg, Ewing, & Ryan, 2010), where some students even
opt to work as they juggle their class and work schedules. Some students work at a job or study
harder than others, but they are all trying to get degrees so maybe one day they will have
meaningful and significant lives. It is a constant struggle for everyone who is trying desperately to
make him or herself into a success. And every college student wants to be involved in society in a
positive manner, allowing contribution of their ideals and values to others. Stress in college is
caused by many other influencing factors. One of these important factors would have to be the
expectations set by parents. They are normally the reason students are in college, so pleasing them
by getting good grades is almost mandatory. The thought of displeasing out parents can be
detrimental to our thought process; meaning that it most likely would cause impaired

Essay About My English Class
I can remember seeing that I had to take an English class my first semester of college. I was
already overwhelmed with starting college, and having to write college essays made me get even
more nervous. I sat down with my mom and decided to look at the English classes available, and I
finally decided that I had to take an evening class to make it work in my schedule. The first day of
English came and now looking back it was not as bad as I thought. It made me a better writer and be
where I am today. It may have taken me some time to get where I am today, but at least I am on
the right track. English Composition helped me realize that I am my own author and have strengths
that I did not realize I had. When I first started college I did not know what to expect with an

technique before submitting all my essays. I can remember having to write my first essay and I

use to help me, and I decided to go to The Learning Center to help with my essay. When I went
there they would make edits to my essay and then explain what I should change. The tutor noticed I

  • 1. Writing Process In College Level Writing Every year, students are required to become more proficient in areas such as math, science, history, and writing. High school English teachers push students to become better writers so they can be ready when they get to college. College–level writing is being able to use advanced vocabulary, developed grammar and rhetorical devices to express ideas accurately and precisely. College–level writing expects the writer to be able to use higher level vocabulary to express their ideas accurately and precisely. The first time I was asked to use higher level vocabulary was in sixth grade, when I tried to use words such as better, bad, sad, etc. Using advanced words, such as miserable and cruel in place of the common words sad and bad, enhanced my writing and turned my essays from ordinary to exceptional. When the writer use advance vocabulary, the reader is more engaged with the writing and can understand it better. For example, the sentence "The dog walked happily to his owner", would sound stronger if the writer used the word joyfully instead. It sounds stronger because happily is a commonly used word, so it has lost the appeal that would make people interested. Using stronger words makes the reader intrigued and wanting to read the essay. Enhanced vocabulary also improves a person's essays because it makes the writer feel more confident about her/his writing. Another aspect of the writing process that is different in college–level writing is that we are expected to use highly Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Reflective Essay on College Writing Reflective Essay on College Writing This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the timerestraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I...show more content... I definitely learned a great deal from our discussions about this book. I really did not like it at all until the class sat down and analyzed the many levels Conrad addressed in his story. I thought the endless paradoxes in the book, once brought to light, were actually very interesting. My favorite section, however, was the poetry unit. I really enjoyed the poem ?The Blues? by Billy Collins the most because of my respect for music. I think Collins really makes a point in his poem about just how important music is and how it allows people who are very different to connect on many levels. I also loved ?Love Calls Us to the Things of This World? by Richard Wilbur. The imagery in this poem was absolutely amazing, and I adored how he made the ordinary things seem mystical with his words. I loved how the laundry became angels. If only we could look at the world from that point of view more often, it would be a much happier place. The criticisms in college have even been somewhat enjoyable and interesting to read. I think I began to like the stories and poems we read in class more and more as we discussed them and looked at different authorities? opinions. I found a lot of the information in the databases very useful. For the Antigone research project, the JSTORS database gave me hundreds of articles dealing with my topic. I could narrow down what I was looking for and find numerous Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The weeks practice was strong and coaches thought we were more prepared than ever. Once coach coffman comes in to talk to us we all know it's time to be serious. There's something about the bark of coaches voice that gets everyone focused and ready to play a serious game of football. We absolutely know it's time to work and buckle down as soon as we have to play the game. It's absolutely electrifying to be on that field during your senior year when you know this is your last chance to make things happen. Everyone knows their job once the game starts. If everyone that is on that field does there job and sticks to their responsibilities we would be fine. If the team plays with their heart even when things go bad and not point fingers but instead work as a team and don't give up you will succeed. Second quarter comes around everyone on the team is working hard. Then a play gets blown up and there's an interception how does the team react. Instead of giving up we stop there offensive roll at the one yard line. This is when things are most serious and there is no room for error. • 4. College Level Writing Style Analysis Thank you for reading through my online portfolio. I have struggled mightily to grasp the concepts of college level writing. I believe that I have made progress in becoming a better writer at the academic level. I hope that you enjoy reading through my papers and I welcome any feedback you might have. When I write, it was usually to give directions or to welcome a new player and his or her parents to the team that I happened to be coaching. It was very informal, but I tried to make sure that there where no typographical errors and that the formatting was uniform and clean. I believed I was doing a good job and my was writing was effective. Then I enrolled English 101. Through this course, I have been challenged immensely, often to...show more content... That is hard for me to say since I never really had much of a style in the past, but I believe I have. I can say that I am more aware of the rules in academic writing, like needing to back up any claims made by citing a credible primary source. I've learned that I need to change my words up to emphasize what I want to say. The strategy that I utilized in the past was to make sure that I formatted my paper in a clean way and that there were no typographical errors. I already knew from working with Microsoft Word over the years that it is not a good tool to rely on to ensure that there are no spelling or grammar errors. In addition, I usually have at least another person proofread the paper for me. Proofreading, I feel, has been the one topic in this course that our teacher has reinforced repeatedly. My plan on how to improve my writing is simply. I will keep at it, I will not quit, and I will do my best to absorb as much as I can while receiving the most from this experience. I will continue to use the resources provided my teacher. I believe Purdue Owl is a very resourceful site that I have saved because it will help me in future classes in which I may need to write Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. In chapter three of The Nuts and Bolts of College Writing, Michael Harvey focuses on flow. He explains consistency of character usage in sentences, additionally with appropriate pronouns and linking words. In sentences, pronouns should refer to their nouns in a neat fashion. This makes passages easier to follow, preventing confusion from arising. Furthermore, characters should be used consistently. The writer controls the flow from one character to another, and they should not be jumbled. If there are several characters, the sequences should introduce each one methodically. Punch lines are also important in combining sentences from a familiar start to new information. Additionally, introductory prepositional phrases are recommended if the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Importance Of College Level Writing College–level writing is frightening it's basically a wakeup call that you're growing up and writing essays will probably be applied in whatever you do. But it's important for us students to know how to write an essay properly, so it can benefit us in our future as students and in our future careers. It would be difficult for me to say that as a student, that when I first thought of college writing, I thought you write millions of facts down and call it a day. But college–level writing is a piece of writing of written work that should grab the reader's attention because as a college writer your written work should go more in–depth into the assigned topic. There are many examples that a college level writing piece should include, such as good research, sources must be listed, and the structure should be logical. Lots of experiences in my life made me realize the definition of college writing, for instance, writing essays through the years, reading articles, and having my own blog. The first thing my teachers always tell me when beginning to write an essay is to make sure to grab the reader's attention. This should be one of the main goals when writing a college–level essay. A writer should always try to grab a reader's attention, you can do this by having the idea, your audience has no idea or little information on what you're going to talk about. This can help the writer provide lots of detail and background information when beginning to write this article. For instance, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 8. Reflection On My English 101 Experience Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses. Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in English 101 is the writing triangle. • 9. The College Level Writing Course At the beginning of the class this year, I didn't expect o to well right off the bat of the college level writing course because I had always struggled with English in middle school through high school. To my surprise though, I have learned many things this semester and have already used some of these skills in other papers in other classes I had. Thanks to the help of Sue Oakes, I can now say proudly that I can actually write a decent paper and feel rather confident about it. Starting off the year in the English class, I had already messed up the first task. I had forgotten to the to sample writing so that she could see how our witting skills were and would try to see what type of work she will have to put into us to make us capable to write a college ready paper. So to start the semester off I had already one late assignment and thought to myself "great she thinks I will be a slacker because I already didn't turn in something". Going more I n depth into the first unit, we had to write a story about ourselves but it had to be a family myth. At the time I was very perplexed because I had never heard of a family myth before so I had no idea what to write about; so I ended up writing about those dang cigars. The step by step process really helped me out in writing papers which I still use for papers now. When I had come to the completion of the paper, I was very satisfied with the work I had accomplished. • 10. College Level Reflection Paper While registering for a college–level course, last year, I questioned how difficult the class would be. I had taken a course the previous semester that had covered the basics in business and economy, yet this would be the first course in English–a topic that I had been told, on many occasions, that I excelled in. Because of this, I came into this year's English class confident and sure that I would receive top marks easily. Unfortunately, it was not so. I struggled through several of the assignments given to me, yet I learned several new techniques and gained insight in what a college–level essay truly consists of. Because of this class, I learned of the importance of transitions between points, the importance of reducing wordiness in sentences, and the importance of explaining information and quotations fully. Over the course of this class, my essays have changed and improved in the way of transitions. At the beginning of the semester, I wrote an introductory reflective essay that covered how I felt about reading or writing. While I enjoyed researching and thinking over the topic thoroughly, the actual act of writing it went poorly, according to the feedback I received from my teacher. The paper was riddled with pencil marks describing issues, the most prevalent of these being transitions between points and paragraphs. I had been previously taught to write a sentence at the end of a paragraph explaining all that I covered in it, to sum it up. Unfortunately, academic, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Considering this is a college level English class, and a subject I struggled in, my worries were not at ease. Throughout the year, my understanding and comprehension of the writing process, as well as how to write different varieties of writing, have strengthened. After partaking in this course, I am confident I have met the student learning outcomes. I have improved my grammar through feedback from my instructor, and workshops I participated in. There is a significant difference between my writing conventions from the beginning of the year to my present writing conventions. In my second essay, The Drastic Evolution of Teen Life, I have noticed many writing convention errors. In this essay I said, "Also with the lack of technology, they were influenced to be more adventurous and get out of the house and explore things on their own" (The Drastic Evolution of Teen Life) This sentence is a prime example of faulty sentence structure; it lacks punctuation in the right places. My third essay, Euthanasia: Condemned by Doctors, has less errors and shows improvement on these writing conventions. Improvement can be seen in the sentence, " Euthanasia should not be legal because it is not morally correct, undermines medical research, and denies patients the final stage of growth"(Euthanasia: Condemned by Doctors). This shows development on sentence structure, punctuation, and helps gives my essay a polished look. • 12. Reflection On College Writing Reflecting how I write When I graduated high school, I already knew that I wanted to attend college other than going to the work force. I heard stories about college being fun and it is one of the greatest accomplishment a person can achieve. So, I began college right after high school. As I entered college, I learned that I will have to focus more on writing papers than having fun. In high school my teachers did not prepare me for college essays. I feel like I learned a lot more failing on my college writing assignment than passing on the essays in high school. Well now I have approached the end of the semester of college, and I am exhausted from the constant writing assignments. Although the assignments were difficult like I said it was also helpful. Each assignment helped me in different ways. The assignments helped me improved with my grammar, time management, and how to process before I begin writing. In English 1010 I had different types of writing assignments. I had to write a literacy narrative paper, analysis paper, research paper, and lastly an autoethnography paper which I am doing now. An autoethnography is when the author uses self reflects to write about their experiences about writing a paper. English is not the only subject that I had writing assignments in. I also had to write assignment in my business class. My English teacher had informed me that I will have to do an autoethnography. • 13. The Importance Of College Level Writing An area of confusion in the college world is what defines college–level writing. There are many possible answers to this question. Students may be confused about this issue because they want to know what is expected of them in their composition classes and the writing that they have to do in their other classes. All of us want to succeed when we get to college and writing makes up a big part of the college learning experience since we have to write in every class we have. Excelling in writing, and especially in writing at the college level, will help students succeed in college because of all of the writing involved in all of their classes. Before we write our papers however, we need to learn how to write at the college level and before that what college–level writing is. College–level writing is something that requires more attention to content and quality than high school level writing, something that has varying expectations between colleges and professors, and something that requires the writer to actively participate in their writing to become better. Some students may believe that the work that they did in high school will be similar to the work that they do in college, but, "there is no guarantee that students who do well in high school composition will automatically do well in college composition" (Davies 31). A student that does excel in their high school writing classes may think that they know how to write at the college level and that they do not need to further Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. College Readiness Essay Determining college readiness is an essential part in determining who will qualify as a good candidate for admission into a college or a university. The last thing that colleges want is for students to qualify for admission and drop out, this affects drop out rate and graduation rate. According Robin Chait and Andrea Venezia (2009), to about 83 percent ofhigh school graduates enroll in some form of postsecondary education, but only about 52 percent of students complete their degrees. Further, a very small proportion of students complete a degree in four years–"among students starting at 'four–year' institutions, only 34 percent finish a B.A. in four years, 64 percent within six years, and 69 percent within eight and a half years."...show more content... According to David Conley, readiness for college contains four key principles: key cognitive strategies, key content knowledge, key self management skills, key knowledge about post and secondary education. Although college readiness can be measured sing ACT andSATscores, which developed a college readiness benchmarks to see whether a prospective college student has a high prospect of success in college courses of English, social sciences, Algebra and biology. However, if your test scores are not meeting the typical benchmarked standard does that truly determine I you are ready for college. No. One thing we have to take under deep consideration is that each student is different and some don't test very well. What happens to a child who has a really good GPA, high determination and a low test score? College recruits deem that these children are not college ready. College readiness should be measured with a more natural eye, because some students may not be good in particular subject areas, however, what would be the likeness of high school students completing and earning a degree in a field that they enjoy. The nature of humans is to do things that they enjoy, to read stories that they can relate too, to complete a task that means a lot to them. This is the natural eye that we should look at college readiness with. How determined and passionate are the students on furthering their education. How Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Effective College Level Writing Strategies Essays Effective College Level Writing Strategies When asked about effective writing, many people respond that it is the act of placing the thoughts together in a logical manner. This response is too narrow because it suggests that effective writing is only a matter of getting the writing code correct. It also suggests that writing degenerates from the thought, which is not the case. Although the definitions of effective writing has nothing to do with effective writing itself, there are various points of effective writing that can be used to achieve effective writing. This means the writer must not stray from the subject of discussion but remain consisted with the theme of writing. At the end of the writing, the writer must provide a conclusion. A conclusion is not considered a distinct paragraph, but is a summary of the main points made in the article. The conclusion should recap the arguments of the author. Effective writing requires that articles must be correctly formatted without typos and grammatical errors. This means an effective writer must proof read the writing once it's done. Proofreading is very important in writing. Although some people have resorted to using spell–checkers, the best proofreader remains the writer (Strategies for Essay Writing, 2014). There are some words that computer programs might assume to be correct when in fact they are not. Thus in order to produce quality writing, the writer must make sure that all mistakes are corrected and that all typos are corrected. In college writing, it is also important that the writer knows and avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious academic offence in most colleges and might lead to academic probation or even expulsion (Strategies for Academic Writing, 2014). College students have expectations they have to live up to in order to fulfill and satisfy the needs of both their parents and society. With such high expectations to do well during college, students may become sleep deprived, which impairs mental capacity, but sleep deprivation is only one of a vast array of symptoms. Over 30% of college freshman report that they feel overwhelmed (Klainberg, Ewing, & Ryan, 2010), where some students even opt to work as they juggle their class and work schedules. It is a constant struggle for everyone who is trying desperately to make him or herself into a success. And every college student wants to be involved in society in a positive manner, allowing contribution of their ideals and values to others. Stress in college is caused by many other influencing factors. One of these important factors would have to be the expectations set by parents. My fascination with research originates from the opportunity that I had to visit my father and his colleagues in a research facility in Beijing University, where my father's team were conducting research to test the result of a certain herbal medicine on rats. My journey with art started when I was still in Iran and my mother enlisted me in my first extracurricular art class. Thus, I had an opportunity to be trained in Chinese Gongbi and Shui–mo painting. In addition, when my journey brought me to the United States, I took advantage of the flexible high school schedule that I previously did not have and enrolled in a variety of art classes. I was able to produce my own short animation, explore different mediums such as watercolor, acrylic, and clay, learn to develop in the dark room what I photographed with my film camera, and create works of art such as sculptures and paintings, all of which have been displayed in my school's galleries. After my virtual tour of The Jewett Arts Center, I wishfully envision myself of walking down the halls and getting inspiration by the excellent variety of artworks. The first day of English came and now looking back it was not as bad as I thought. It made me a better writer and be where I am today. It may have taken me some time to get where I am today, but at least I am on the right track. English Composition helped me realize that I am my own author and have strengths that I did not realize I had. When I first started college I did not know what to expect with an English class. I liked writing about topics that interested me, but high school did not allow me to do that. I took American History and we would have to write...show more content... I learned many techniques from my professor. He helped me realize that it is okay to have your own opinion as long as you back it up. He showed me that I am an author when I did not think I was. He also told us to read our essays out loud when we proofread, and I always did this technique before submitting all my essays. I can remember having to write my first essay and I was scared, because I felt like I had to get a good grade. I started thinking about what tools I could use to help me, and I decided to go to The Learning Center to help with my essay. When I went there they would make edits to my essay and then explain what I should change. The tutor noticed I used multiple choppy sentences and commas in spots there should not be. Sometimes I would even go twice to make sure I did not miss any minor mistakes. Going there helped me feel more confident as a writer and I learned from my mistakes. I had many helpful techniques from multiple people that shaped me into the writer I am Get more content on HelpWriting.net
