Jesus teaches that putting new wine in old wineskins or patching a new garment with old cloth will ruin both the new and the old. Similarly, trying to contain the new kingdom of God within the old religious system will leave people in "a total mess". Jesus is introducing something entirely new that requires full conversion rather than just adding to the old ways. Those comfortable with the old traditions may reject the new teachings of Jesus.
2. Luke 5:36-39 (NLT) Then Jesus gave them this illustration: "No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to patch an old garment. For then the new garment would be torn, and the patch wouldn't even match the old garment. [37] And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. The new wine would burst the old skins, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. [38] New wine must be put into new wineskins. [39] But no one who drinks the old wine seems to want the fresh and the new. 'The old is better,' they say."
3. TAKE HOME I realize I like my old wine. I've become quite content with it. Yikes! I resolve to start over, beginning with dying to my old self. Lord Jesus, there is so much of my heart left for you to conquer, so today I give you permission to battle against the 'old me'.
7. THE CHALLENGE OF CHANGE Even the best of new ideas slam into brick walls! The Automobile Television Microwave ovens Airplanes, airplane travel Various medical practices and procedures
8. THE MESSIAH DIDN'T OPERATE WITH A HIGH LEVEL OF COMMITMENT TO THE "SAME OLE SAME OLE" Jesus made bunches of contrasts between how his people had lived under the Law and how they would need to live in the Kingdom of God:
9. THE OLD WAY Externals were the issue. "Everything they (teachers of the law and Pharisees) do is done for men to see." --Matthew 23:5 Seated in places of honor and greeted in the market place. "You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence." --Matthew 23: 25 “ ..you have neglected the more important matters of the law, justice, mercy and faithfulness." --Matthew 23
14. JESUS TAUGHT A WHOLE NEW WAY OF LIVING Not just hands (don't kill, steal, etc.). "But I say unto you, "Don't think it!" --Matt 5: 20-48 IN FACT!! JESUS INSISTED THAT KINGDOM LIVING WOULD MEAN PUTTING ONE'S OLD WAYS ASIDE.
15. THE CONTEXT OF JESUS' TEACHING Pharisees accusation: "John's disciples fast and pray but you and your group go on eating and drinking." Luke 5: 33 Jesus' response: "Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? There will be time for fasting when the bridegroom is gone."
16. JESUS' DECLARATION I am introducing something entirely new. A new day has arrived. It won't be easy for you to adapt. Anything short of full conversion will leave you in a total mess (Consider the fresh patch on old cloth and new wine in old wineskins.) Those who have been drinking the old wine for a long time will find the new wine difficult to swallow.
17. DEFINITIONS JESUS IS THE PATCH. JESUS IS THE NEW WINE THE OLD SYSTEM CANNOT CONTAIN THE KINGDOM. SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE. AND IT WON'T BE JESUS FOSSILIZED RELIGIOUS LEADERS ARE THE OLD GARMENT AND OLD WINE SKIN SINCE THEY PREFER THE OLD, THEY'LL DO AWAY WITH THE NEW (JESUS!) --John 1: 10-12
18. HOW ABOUT US? IS THERE A MESSAGE FOR TODAY? Accepting Jesus means more than putting a new hanky in your old suit. You need a totally new set of threads. We'll not be totally converted to his ways overnight but he wants our 'want to' now. This is not about putting an addition on your house, we need to go right down to the foundation. --II Cor. 5: 17 --I Cor. 3: 11
21. TAKE HOME I realize I like my old wine. I've become quite content with it. Yikes! I resolve to start over, beginning with dying to my old self. Lord Jesus, there is so much of my heart left for you to conquer, so today I give you permission to battle against the 'old me'.
