Dark matter and dark energy make up 95% of the universe, with dark matter comprising 25% and dark energy 70%. Dark matter cannot be seen directly and can only be detected through its gravitational effects. Although its composition is unknown, dark matter is thought to consist of dust, planets, black holes or dwarf stars. Dark energy is driving the accelerating expansion of the universe and its exact nature remains a mystery.
