Collaborative Learning
 If some form of expertise challenges a
child, then greater cognitive development
can occur.
 Collaborative learning states that if a 9 year
old child works on a problem with an adult or
an advanced child, the 9 year old would be
able to learn the concept or ideas that were
more complex
 The child would be able to apply the new
skills to other situations
Collaborative Learning

 Vygotsky believed students should work
collaboratively to share their different
perspectives with each other

Key People
 LeyVygotsky (1896-1934)
 Vygotsky was a Russian psychologist who
believed that learning is influenced
significantly by social development.
 Developed social cognition
 Theorized that learning took place within the
context of a child’s social development and
culture

Key Points
 Improves a child’s cognitive skills
 Shares different perspectives with other
students
 Allows students to negotiate a solution and
come up with a much deeper understanding
of a problem or task

Classroom Implications
 Students work in groups or teams (with or
without technology)
 Teachers should discover the level of each
child’s development and build a learning
experience from that point, also known as
scaffolding
Personal Views
 The idea of collaborative learning is a good
strategy that is beneficial to both students
and teachers
 However, the teacher must make sure that
the students are working together instead of
allowing one person contribute more than
the others
