2. Collaborative Learning
If some form of expertise challenges a
child, then greater cognitive development
can occur.
Collaborative learning states that if a 9 year
old child works on a problem with an adult or
an advanced child, the 9 year old would be
able to learn the concept or ideas that were
more complex
The child would be able to apply the new
skills to other situations

4. Key People
LeyVygotsky (1896-1934)
Vygotsky was a Russian psychologist who
believed that learning is influenced
significantly by social development.
Developed social cognition
Theorized that learning took place within the
context of a child’s social development and
culture
6. Key Points
Improves a child’s cognitive skills
Shares different perspectives with other
students
Allows students to negotiate a solution and
come up with a much deeper understanding
of a problem or task
8. Classroom Implications
Students work in groups or teams (with or
without technology)
Teachers should discover the level of each
child’s development and build a learning
experience from that point, also known as
scaffolding
9. Personal Views
The idea of collaborative learning is a good
strategy that is beneficial to both students
and teachers
However, the teacher must make sure that
the students are working together instead of
allowing one person contribute more than
the others
