The Sierra Club Northeast Florida Group will be at One Spark! We look forward to meeting members of our Jacksonville community, and helping our neighbors get more involved in our upcoming environmental campaigns.
2. Florida was once an expansive stretch of wetlands. Now, you can enter certain
parts of Florida and see nothing but concrete as far as the eye can see. The
result? A lot of flooding, and a severely damaged water supply.
3. Sierra Club is the oldest and largest environmental group in the United States.
We are focused on conservation, preservation and maintaining an overall
healthy environment.
4. In Jacksonville, this means getting our hands dirty to keep the
river running fresh, maintain the open lands surrounding us
and working to keep the air fresh and clean for us to breathe.
We are especially concerned with preserving our State’s
water through meaningful conservation practices.
5. There is a lot of preserved land throughout Florida,
but not as much as there once was.
6. We have had two
land buying
programs,
including
Preservation
2000 and Florida
Forever, both of
which permitted
the State the
authority to buy
and preserve
environmentally
sensitive land to
prevent it from
being developed
on.
7. We all need water, we
all need air to breathe,
and we all want open
land to visit and enjoy.
Then, it is up to us to
take steps to preserve
our land to keep it
clean and healthy.
8. In 2014, we’ll be working side by side
with other organizers from around the
state to build awareness about the
declining preservation efforts of our state
officials.
Our goal? To create a permanent fund
that will pay for these preservation
efforts. We are dedicated this year to
passing the Land and Water Legacy
Amendment, which will be on the
ballot this November.
9. Stop by our table at One Spark to learn how you can be part of our 2014
campaign action, and to find out more information about Florida’s
preservation efforts.
