I was asked to talk about Maine's startup and innovation community for a keynote luncheon. I ended up talking about the 5 things that I'm already obsessed about for 2017.
4. • “Innovation Driven Enterprises” (IDEs)
are pursuing global opportunities
based on bringing customers new
innovations that have a clear
competitive advantage and high-
growth potential.
• “Small Medium Enterprises” (SMEs)
are serving local markets with
traditional, well-understood business
ideas and limited competitive
advantage.

5 things
I’m
focused
If it was easy to to this…everyone would have figured it out. But it’s a bit like the Gordian Knot.
I consider myself a gardener, a soil improver – focused on the conditions of growth and innovation.
Key defenitiional difference. I’m focused on IDEs. Maine is great at SMEs. But net new job creation comes from SMEs.
Here is the strategy for building robust startup communities
What the hell is an ecosystem? It’s not always well organized. Sometimes competition breeds performance. It’s about the rainforest and not the industrial farming.
Look at the changing landscape in Maine’s startup and innovation ecosystem. The white are initiatives driven by the private secotr and the black are driven by the public sector. Leaders and Feederss.
We cannot just be cheerleaders. We must do more and drive more accountability and more time pressure.
Use a critical eye.
Look at the background and the family tree of innovation. We can do that too. But we need a strategy.
Tide pools without waves die of lack of oxygen. Our ecosystem is like a tide pool. It must constantly refresh itself and encourage and embrace new people, diverse perspectives and new approaches. That way new things will grow and flourish.
The Millinocket Marathon. No permission asked. Led by entrepreneur. Ground-up. A movement.
