The Shortage Of Nurses In The Nursing Field
The largest and one of the most important areas in the healthcare field is our nurses, yet everyday
many are subjected to unfair working conditions such as excessive working hours, low wages, and
lack of support from within an organization. This ultimately results in many of those in the nursing
field seeking employment in other organizations, or switching career fields all together. This can
result in a lack of nurses, which not only puts the patient at risk, it can also reflect negatively on an
organization as a whole.
The New York Times (2015), states, "Without nurses, the largest group of health care professionals
in this country, there simply is no quality health care system." (Nurse Staffing and Patient Safety,
2015) Many of us agree with the statement, as nurses are fundamental to the health and safety for all
of us at some time in our lives. Knowing several nurses, the question was raised as to what they felt
was the largest contributor to the nursing shortage.

"Universities do not prepare nurses to nurse, they prepare us to manage. Historically, nurses learnt in
the clinical area, they were hands on with patients. Now we sit in classrooms and learn about

Strategy to Change
Nursing workload is an ongoing concern, one that influences the safety of both the patient and the
nurse. Thus, attention is now focused more than ever on establishing a minimum nurse–to–patient
ratio and acuity tools that evaluate nursing care requirements. S.B. 228 and H.B. 4311 will greatly
impact the present and future of nursing in the United States if enacted. I believe it will help address
many of the problems I see affecting nursing workload and the nursing shortage today. This
legislation has a comprehensive plan that will mandate unit specific staffing–minimums, unit
specific acuity tools, and will take into account situation–level workload. This legislation not only
creates more reasonable workloads, it also reduces stress levels resulting in more nurses remaining
in the profession and new individuals being attracted to nursing. With the goal to improve patient
safety and nursing satisfaction, nurses need to get involved, take action, and support this legislation.

On my medical–surgical/oncology unit we have 32 patients with highly complex needs. Patient

and replacement nurses will be needed by 2018 to meet the increased demands of the health care
workforce" (). The stressful conditions under which nurses work, due in part to the nursing shortage,
are among the risk factors that contribute to nurses' abuse of illicit drugs and alcohol. Nurses are
unique in that they work in an environment where they not only have access to controlled
substances, but also are exposed to critically ill patients, traumatic situations, death and dying, the
stress of which can increase the risk of substance abuse. (Epstein, Burns, & Conlon, 2010).
Unfortunately, it is the patient that suffers the most. Substance abuse continues to be a serious health
care concern with millions of American 18 and older using illegal drugs. Substance abuse occurs
across all generations, cultures, and occupations, including nursing. "About 1 in 10, or 10–15% of
all nurses, may be impaired or in recovery from alcohol or drug addiction" (Thomas & Siela, 2011).
When a nurse is impaired they will not be able to function at their normal capacity, and are not able
to provide quality patient care. They may not be able to think as quickly, and have a delayed

There is still both enthusiasm for and doubts about the usage of educational technology in the
classroom. However, the integration of technology in reading instruction has kept up with the
movements and changes in the field of the reading and writing curriculum. While faced with many
book shortages, this article also gives ideas for strengthening the skill of students in writing and

With the global nursing shortage, organizations are looking for strategies to retain nurses. One
strategy for nurse retention is, encouraging nurses to get certified, according to research studies. The
population affected by nurse certification is the nurse, the patient, and the organization.
Organizations need to invest into getting nurses certified in their specialty area. Research proves that
certified nurses' self–perception is a sense of empowerment. The Iowa Model of Evidence–Based
Practice will be utilized to guide the change to practice. A literature search was conducted using one
of the world's largest database search engines, the Academic Search Complete (EBSCO). The search
resulted in over 300 journal articles, which were then evaluated and categorized using the evidence
hierarchy rating system. The theoretical framework was the Kanter's theory of structural
empowerment. Fostering the nurses' self–perception of empowerment, which comes with being
certified is a mediator of personal growth; increased competence and confidence; enhanced
knowledge and self–esteem; and ultimately retention. Specialty nurse certification proves the nurse
continued commitment to education and practice, which are ongoing instead of episodic, and thus
more consistent with the changes in healthcare. With the rising cuts in healthcare a constraint

Though Bally and Nemcek are both concerned about high attrition rates in registered nurses and
seek ways to increase retention rates and decrease the rate of turnovers, the factors which they
consider critical in addressing the shortage of nurses by increasing rates of retention are vastly

The nursing shortage is an issue that affects the quality of care that is given to a patient. We always
hear about job dissatisfaction or nursing schools not accepting students be a factor of the nursing
shortage, but there is a bigger factor and that is the baby boomer nurses who are on the verge of
retirement. These baby boomer nurses will retire in the next couple of years and this will leave a big
gap in the nursing workforce. This will cause the next big nursing shortage. According to the
American Association of College of Nursing (AACN) in 2013, 55% of the registered nurses (RNs)
are age 50 or older. The Health Resource and Services Administration expects for more than 1
million RNs to reach retirement age within the next 10 to 15 years (AACN, 2014b). Nursing is a
graying population, meaning that the workforce is retiring at a rate faster than it can be replaced.
Organizations need to find solutions that would limit the impact of the baby boomers retiring.
I chose this issue because I only knew a few things about the nursing shortage like job
dissatisfaction being a contributor. I wanted to go in depth and found out that the next nursing
shortage will be far worse than the previous nursing shortages because of the retiring baby boomers.
Hospitals and other health providers will not just be losing nurses, but clinical and institutional

decreased considerably, and they have poor time management since they spend a considerable
amount of their time trying to familiarize themselves with the new environment. This article is
unique because it provides information that can help float nurses be more productive when floating
to another unit. The author encouraged float nurses to be up to date with their skills, to know their
limits, and to speak up when they do not feel safe accepting an assignment. Although this article

Shortage Of Nurses And Healthcare Workers
I believe that there is a shortage of nurses in the United States and in other counties throughout the
world. There is a big shortage of nurses and healthcare workers in the nursing home where I worked
at. To solve the problem of the nursing shortage, management hired travel nurses to come into the
facility to work. I think travel nurses can be helpful in some ways and hurtful in other ways. Staff at
the nursing home gave the travel nurses a hard time because they were getting paid more money for
the same job. Another problem with the travel nurses was that they rarely showed up to work and
called off often. I think that one way to keep travel nurses from calling off or not showing up is to
have them sign a contract. Although, most traveling nurses sign a contract, my facility did not have
signed contract nurses come in.
I am currently a travel nurse and I had to sign a six month contract and will be penalized if I don't
complete it. There is also a nursing shortage at the current job that I am contracted through, even
though they contract nurses from several different agencies. The facility is currently adding 50 more
patient beds, which will make the shortage even worse. I think the health care field is getting more
patients that are more difficult to take care of, which causes more staff to be needed. I think the
nursing shortage is only going to get worse because the baby boomer generation is starting to age
and will require more nursing care.

In fact, there have been many attempts to evaluate both technical and professional competency
differences between nurses with a BSN or ADN with no conclusive findings to merit a general
consensus that competency is significantly greater in nurses with a BSN (Hess, 1996). Requiring a
BSN would lead to a nursing shortage and prevent students that would have gotten their Associates
Degree in Nursing (ADN) from being excellent nurses. Those that do invest more time and money
by getting their BSN are rewarded by being the preferred candidate and have more opportunities to
further their education and scope of practice.
Another key issue with the ANA's proposal was that it was rushed when it did not need to be.
Proponents were so fixed on implementing change, they neglected critical components necessary for
achieving it. The proposal was controlled and molded by members of Boards of Nursing that already
attained a level of higher education. They created a proposal that would impact the nursing world
without seeking insight from the people with whom the changes would affect most significantly. The
proposal seemed to be a quick fix to increase educational standards for nurses without any
consideration of the nurses.
North Dakota was the first and only state to implement the proposal in 1987. A bill was written to

The need for highly trained intelligence personnel has never been more important. A personnel
shortage at the Intelligence Training Branch has a negative impact on the Coast Guard. The effects
of this shortage are resulting in signs of burn out within the staff, the graduates are not receiving the
highest quality of training, and the instructor billets are becoming harder to fill. From a chief's
perspective staff burn out is a high priority issue. With the exception of the School Chiefs and
Deputy School Chief all instructions for both "A" and "C" School come from the same central pool.
IS "A" School is the only school on site designed this way. We are billeted for six petty officers.
However, we currently only have two. That leaves two chiefs and two petty officers to complete 81
training weeks per year. Some of these trainings are road shows and require two people to travel. In
addition to the regular work schedule, the chief's must be duty IS and OOD qualified. The petty
officers must be duty IS qualified. This is currently putting us in a one and four rotation for duty IS.
Unfortunately, this leaves minimal time for leave resulting in staff burn out. Due to the demands of

It was half way through my acute care rotation at a large, urban hospital. Over the course of my
placement I had seen a myriad of patients with diverse diagnoses, from tuberculosis to addiction, to

I approached my clinical instructor to see if she had seen it. She took me aside and looked me
straight in the eyes and said, "Mrs. S. died last night". Immediately, when I heard the word "died" I
could feel tears well up, but somehow I held it together and continued to work another 8 hours.
However, throughout the day I remember feeling physically and emotionally exhausted and having
trouble focusing. It wasn't until two weeks later, when I was talking to my partner about clinical that
I realized that I had been carrying around the emotional burden of this death for the past few weeks.

The Shortage Of Nurses In The Nursing Field The largest and one of the most important areas in the healthcare field is our nurses, yet everyday many are subjected to unfair working conditions such as excessive working hours, low wages, and lack of support from within an organization. This ultimately results in many of those in the nursing field seeking employment in other organizations, or switching career fields all together. This can result in a lack of nurses, which not only puts the patient at risk, it can also reflect negatively on an organization as a whole. The New York Times (2015), states, "Without nurses, the largest group of health care professionals in this country, there simply is no quality health care system." (Nurse Staffing and Patient Safety, 2015) Many of us agree with the statement, as nurses are fundamental to the health and safety for all of us at some time in our lives. Knowing several nurses, the question was raised as to what they felt was the largest contributor to the nursing shortage. The following statement comes from a personal interview with Cheryl E.
