AmEriCAn PoPular MuSic<br />1960 – 2000<br />Decade/Subgenre: 1970s Punk & New Wave<br />“Sounds and Sources” notes:<br />Main IdeaDetailsGoing One Step FurtherFans came together to see The Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band in what was known as the biggest rock show of all time. Country Rockers and Song-SingersThe move towards country and western started by the likes of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers, which created a new style of music: country rock. Rock OnRock in the 1970s was hard and heavy and was perfected by new british bands such as Black Sabbath, Free, and Deep Purple. Mega RockAnother extreme was “progressive rock”, which took popular music into the realms of opera, classical, and electronics. Glam-TasticThe 1970s had seen the advent of glam, which had both its frivolous and serious sides. A New Black SoundBlack music had continued to be a huge force both as an influence and as a mainstream phenomenon. Pop Won’t StopPop also continued, thanks to the rise of Elton John, Rod Stewart, and Queen all of whom crossed over from rock into the mainstream. The Dawn Of PunkRumours began to circulate in 1975 of a new type of rock that was a return to basics but delivered with such speed and conviction and force that it was like a blow to the head. A Rotten IdeaThey created the Sex Pistols, whose look was based on the torn T-shirts of Richard Hell. Johnny Rotten had his very own ideas.A New OrderThe establishment had momentarily been toppled. Labels like Virgin dropped its hippie bands and only signed outfits with short haircuts and snappy suits. <br />AmEriCAn PoPular MuSic<br />1960 – 2000<br />Main Artist Name # 1 : The Clash<br />Main IdeaDetailsLondon Calling The U.S.The Clash went into creative overdrive for the electric but stylish double album, “London Calling”, which they insisted on selling for the price of a single LP. They Fought The LawThey recruited guitarist Keith Levene and drummer Terry Chimes before luring singer/guitarist Joe Strummer from pub rock band the 101ers.
