A graduate of Tufts University’s School of Veterinary Medicine, since 1989 Jay
Butan DVM has owned and worked at Canal Animal Hospital in Lake Worth,
Florida. For the past several years, Jay Butan DVM has participated as a trail
vet for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Alaska’s best-known sporting event, the Iditarod held its first race in 1973.
Over the years the contest has evolved, with mushers from more than a
dozen foreign countries competing in past races. The mushers race from
Anchorage to Nome and cover more than 1,150 miles. Each year the race
starts on the first Saturday in March and ends when the last musher reaches
Nome. The 2017 Iditarod begins on March 2.
In June 2016, the Iditarod Trail Committee announced that 52 mushers
entered on the first official entry day for the 45th race taking place in 2017.
Of these 52, 29 were on-hand at the committee’s headquarters in Wasilla,
with another 23 signing up via mail. There were 12 who registered as rookies
and 10 from foreign countries. Among the entrants are four-time champions
Dallas Seavey, Jeff King, Martin Buser, and Lance Mackey, as well as two-time
champion Mitch Seavey.
