The owner of Canal Animal Hospital, Jay Butan, DVM has provided veterinary care in Palm Beach County and the Lake Worth Beach community since 1989. To prepare for his career as a vet, Jay Butan, DVM graduated as an undergraduate from Cornell University where he was a member of the honor society and graduated with distinction and then from The Cumming's School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. Scientists at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University believe their success in administering gene therapy to mice and dogs may have implications for humans with many different conditions including heart disease. The scientists have used gene therapy to effectively stop leaky heart valves in mice, and are currently testing the therapy on Cavalier King Charles spaniels that have mitral valve disease. The therapy essentially consists of injecting DNA to promote protein growth in cells to ultimately stop leakage in heart valves. The scientists are hopeful that the new therapy will also work for humans, in part, because many dog diseases have proven to be similar to human disease. Further, the therapy may effectively treat problems beyond heart disease.
