The Cardinal Tien Hospital was founded in Xindian in 1968 and the Yong Ho branch was
established in 1983. We recently began providing our medical services in An Kang District
at the beginning of 2014. There are approximately 1800 total beds at the hospital, which
allow us to become the First Teaching Hospital for the Fu Jen Catholic University College
of Medicine. The hospital focuses on three major areas: medicine, teaching, and research.
Additionally, we obtained the English Services Emblem Certificate from the Executive Yuan
in 2012.
Our medical care services are based on the Four Principles of Holistic Care – caring the
whole person, the whole journey, the whole family, and from the whole team, and to take
care for our patients’ body, mind, and spirit in order to meet all their different needs. Our
services include preventive care, acute and chronic illness care, long-term care and the
hospice care, a true comprehensive service for patients.

(1)Minimal invasive spinal cord preservative surgery:
The primary role of the spine is not only to protect the spinal cord and maintain the
normal function of nerve roots but also to support the body’s posture and movement.
Local herniated intervertebral discs, spur formations, and thickened ligaments account
for the major causes of myelopathies/radiculopathies. To preserve the normal function
of the spine and reduce morbidities, surgical intervention for the aforementioned causes
should focus on minimal normal tissue destruction and effective removal of lesions.
(2)Motion Preservation- Surgery of the Spine
1.Improve the problems of disc herniation, spinal degeneration, tumor or neuropathy
caused by compression of the cervical spinal cord or nerve root.
2.Improve the cervical instability caused by trauma or fracture
(3)Microvascular decompressive surgery
Microvascular decompressive (MVD) surgery approaches the facial nerve (CN VII)
or trigeminal nerve (CN V) through an incision made 2~3 cm post-auricle. The nerve
of interest will be dissected away from the compressing vessel(s), thus relieving
the symptoms of facial spasm or trigeminal neuralgia on the side of surgery. This
surgical technique has a success rate of over 90% with only rare instances of serious
post-operation complications.
●Orthopedics
(1)Total Hip Replacement(THR)
The hip joints (articulation coxa) stand the strongest force in all skeleton of our
body. In THR surgery, we use alloys as a substitute for hip joints with necrosis.
According to the principles of mechanics, you can use an entirely new artificial joint
to do the daily activities after THR.
(2)Radiofrequency Thermocoagulation
The heat and the wavelength generate from the electromagnetic waves will work
on the human nervous tissue and reduce the pain.

and eight thousand cases of spinal surgeries.
Our surgical experience is among the top
10 of the medical centers nationwide. One
of the most renowned accomplishments in
the neurosurgical field is our comprehensive
translational research on intramedullary
hemangioblastomas.
Clinically, we have operated on more than 10
cases of intramedullary hemangioblastomas,
and our basic research discovered new
genetic markers involving the pathogenesis
of this familial inheritance tumor. Another
two renowned breakthroughs in difficult
spinal surgeries include surgical strategies for
osteoporotic burst fractures (in replacement
of traditional long-segment instrumentations)
and decompressive cervical laminoplasty (in
replacement of traditional laminectomy).
In the era of minimal-invasion and image-
guidance surgeries, we recently established
three novel neurosurgical fields. First,
neuroendoscopic techniques become one
of our routine neurosurgical procedures.
Second, we set up a hybrid operating room
incorporating neurointerventional facilities and
neurosurgical procedures for the treatments
of complex cerebrovascular diseases. This
is the first hybrid room that can be utilized
comprehensively by neurosurgeons in Taipei.
Third, we adopted various new devices for
spinal surgeries, such as interspinous process
devices, artificial discs, and percutaneous
screw placements. Recently, we set up an
integrated system between Siemens multi-
axis Artis zeego with Brainlab Spine Navigation
system to offer real-time navigation on spinal
surgeries. Next to Japan, this is one of the first
integration systems in the world.

Department of Dentistry
The Department of Dentistry was set up at the time the Cathay General Hospital was
established back in 1977. At that time, we had five subdivisions, i.e., Endodontics, Oral
surgery, Pedodontics and Orthodontics, Periodontics, and Prosthodontics. We provided
one of the best dental services not only for the residence in the neighborhood but
the whole of Taiwan. As the years gone by, we expanded to 9 department, these are
Endodontics, Family dentistry, Oral Implantology, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, Pedodontics,
Periodontics, Prosthodontics, and Dentistry for special needs. So, other than tradition
dental treatments, we provide comprehensive dental treatment for our patients.
The Endodontic Department is dealing with the diseases involving dental pulp, which
caused severe sharp/dull pain. Dentists have to work in a small area in the root canal and is
very time consuming. Patients with the disease suffer greatly. So we brought a microscope
into our department in 2004, which allowed our treatment process to become more
precise, efficient, and less inconvenient for the patients.
The family dentistry provides services that included ordinary cavity fillings, teeth cleaning
and single crown restorations and simple dental bridges for patients.
The dental implant treatment started very early in our hospital; we specially formed a team
for this treatment in 1989, with the department of oral surgery and periodontics installing
the implants and the department of prosthodontics providing restorative methods.
In addition to ordinary implant treatments, we also provide sinus lifting, guided bone
regeneration, monocoritcal bone block grafting, and more.
The services of the Department of Oral Surgery included extraction, minor oral surgery, and
major oral cancer treatment. Our team leader, Professor Lai of KMU, has been in charge of
orthognathic surgical treatment since 1984. So far, we have done about 2000 surgeries.
Orthodontic treatment is one of our original services for the patients since the medical
center was established. We provide basic orthodontic treatment and adult orthodontic
treatment in combination with orthognathic treatment. Starting from 2013, we have added
INVISILIN into our daily practice. Pedodontic treatment is treating children under 15 years
old, either with ordinary or dental phobia children.
Department of Periodontics deals with diseases related to tooth supporting tissues,
either using non-surgical or with surgical treatments. We offer guided tissue regeneration
treatment since 1986 and implant treatment since 1989.
Prosthodontics emphasizes restorative works. The works included complicated crown
bridge works, full mouth reconstruction, esthetic dentistry, and more.
The department of dentistry also provides treatment for special needs and handicapped
patients, and autism.
Although we have many subspecialties, the communication between departments is never
a problem. Our strength lies in the efficient interdisciplinary treatment.
Radiology
Our radiology department consisting of general radiology, special (fluoroscopic) radiology,
emergent radiology, computed tomography (CT), including CT urography, coronary CTA and
3DCAT to show the relation of the tumor and vessels, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),
mammography including tumor localization, ultrasonography (US), health imaging studies
and image-guided interventional radiology to provide complete modern imaging and
therapeutic services. The interventional services include transarterial embolization (TAE)
and transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) of hepatocellular carcinoma, transarterial
embolization (TAE) of internal bleeding, image-guided percutaneous biopsy, aspiration and
drainage of the abscess.
Health Examination Center
Medical Imaging Healthcare Center
Over a hundred years ago, Dr. Wilhelm Conrad
Roentgen discovered the X-ray, which allowed
us to see inside the body and opened up a new
era of medical imaging diagnosis.
Today, technological advancements are
changing our everyday lives. Newer and faster
computers and imaging diagnoses allow
medical imaging diagnosis to detect early stage
of cancer, vascular lesions, which can vastly
improve treatment effects and outcome. Our
ultimate goal of achieving total health and
diseases prevention is becoming a reality.
The Taiwanese people’s most common
great diseases include various kinds of
cancers, cerebrovascular apoplexy, and
cardiovascular disease. In line with the
development of global medical imaging
technology, methods of investigating diseases
are constantly updated and increases
the opportunities for early diagnoses by
a large margin. For increasing the effectiveness
of medical treatment, the Cathay Medical
Imaging Healthcare Center was instituted in
particular.

Introduction
History
In the 70's and 80's, Banqiao and Tucheng
District of New Taipei City are districts
with large populations, but there were no
modern hospital in these areas. As such,
seriously injured workers and patients in
critical condition had to be transferred to
Taipei City. Under this circumstance, many
of them were delayed in receiving a proper
medical treatment due to the long travel
distance. Mr. Yu-Ziang Hsu, founder of
the Far Eastern Group, was aware of the
situation and his beliefs on the concept By
the society, for the society, and founded
the Far Eastern Memorial Foundation to
construct a hospital to provide emergency
rescue, free clinics for the poor and sick, and
inspiring medical and medicine research.
Far Eastern Memorial Hospital (FEMH) was
established in Banqiao on April 1, 1981 and
with 150 beds ready for service. The FEMH
was accredited by the Ministry of Education
to become a secondary teaching hospital
in 1983, then formally became a secondary
teaching hospital in 1985, then a regional
hospital in 1988, and functioning as the
district hospital and teaching hospital in
1991 to 1997, and then the district hospital
and Class II Teaching Hospital, in 2000 to
2003.
The FEMH started a co-op program with
National Taiwan University Hospital in 1999
under the leadership of Professor Shu-Hsun
Chu for realizing the vision of becoming a
Far Eastern Memorial Hospital
order to help improve the medical
quality of FEMH and connect with the
wider world.
Research
FEMH has two laboratories, one
animal laboratory, and a 24-hour
e-library set up for an excellent
academic research environment. In
addition to the financial support of Far
Eastern Memorial Foundation, the FEMH has
appropriated research funds and distributed
to the chief physician and other medical
personnel, such as medical technical staff
and nurses, for clinical and basic research.
The FEMH has also had 701 research
dissertations published from 2012 to 2015.
The publication of dissertations on domestic
and international articles has increased in
number every year. FEMH has worked with
Yuan Ze University, Oriental Institute of
Technology, Fu Jen Catholic University, and
National Yang-Ming University to establish
a comprehensive cooperation between
academics and industry for continuing
medical research and upgrading medical
professionalism and quality.
Management
The FEMH has an organizational structure
setup including Strategy Planning
Department, Internal Audit Department,
Secretary Department, Information
Technology Department, Human Resources
Department, Accounting Department,
Medical Affairs Department, General
Affairs Department, Supply Material
Department, Mechanical Medical
Engineering Department, Occupational
Safety Department, Quality Center, Health
Management Center, Health development
Center, and Social Work Department for
business development. In recent years, the
FEMH has accomplished great achievements
in promoting quality circles, improving
special projects, defining standard operation
procedures, introducing and substantiating
ISO9001, applying balanced scorecards, and
establishing vision-oriented management
and medical information. In 2010, the
FEMH started to implement TOSHMS and
ISO 14001, and was certified in 2011 and
2014. FEMH utilizes relevant information
and the Internet to unify data and quality
control indexes, and improve service quality
continuously to fulfill patients’ satisfaction
and work towards a humanity centered
medical center.
Prospects
The FEMH is actively working to increase the number of beds and to continue expansion
and renovation. The FEMH plans to work with Yuan Ze University and Oriental Institute of
Technology to have a medical university set up for cultivating medical talents. The FEMH
aims to bring the best medical care in the world to the residents of the Taipei Metropolitan
area with the most modern architecture and the warmest services.

Introduction
We have completed 116 cases of kidney
transplantation since 2000, and performed
the first case of living kidney donation and
transplant between relatives from a prisoner.
The liver transplants started in 2010 and
62 cases were completed. The first liver
donation and transplant via laparoscopic
in Taiwan was operated in our hospital. In
2012, we had been certified as the first
medical center that could perform intestine
transplantation, and have completed 19
cases.
●News of intestine transplantation
Due to the substantial increase of patient
numbers in the emergency room, treatment
for trauma patients is crucial. Therefore,
the Traumatology Department is set up with over 2,000 severe trauma cases treated so far.
Minimally Invasive Surgery has become the main stream of all kinds of surgery under the
precondition of safety and quality. The FEMH is the top hospital in Taiwan for minimally
invasive surgery cases, and number two for laparoscopic appendectomies and hernia
repair. The nephrology medical team formed by specialized professions provides patients
with high quality medical service. The team received the Medical Biotechnology Award
in 2005. The FEMH has successfully built up its medical core competency through years
of effort. Its primary mission is to make each department outstanding, each physician
eminent, and each individual exercise his/her expertise to the best of their abilities.

MacKay Memorial Hospital was established in the 1880s, under the jurisdiction of the
Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, and in the memory of Dr. George Leslie MacKay, a Canadian
missionary who followed in the footsteps of his Master by coming to Taiwan with the
message of salvation for all men. Even in those early days, Dr. MacKay was concerned
about the whole person and ministered to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of
each patient.
As one of the oldest medical centers in northern Taiwan,
MacKay Memorial Hospital (MMH) has a full range of
medical specialties. We treat almost every type of illness.
MMH has one of the largest and best-equipped intensive
care units and specialty wards in Taiwan. Our medical teams
consist of specialists from different departments providing
patients with integrated and comprehensive care.
Currently, MacKay Memorial Hospital has four branch hospitals across Taiwan. Our four
branch hospitals make up a health network, providing health care and treatment for
patients in northern, western and eastern Taiwan.

Min-Sheng General Hospital was first established in 1975 by Dr. Yang Min-Sheng as a
General Surgery clinic. The original clinic has steadily grown and services have been added,
leading to the modern Min-Sheng General Hospital that is now a 700-bed tertiary hospital
at the center of the Min-Sheng Healthcare Group.
Besides the Ching-Kuo flagship campus, Min-Sheng Healthcare also operates two other
(smaller) hospitals and five long-term care facilities in the Taoyuan area.
Striving for excellence, Min-Sheng General Hospital actively seeks third party validation
of its facilities and processes. In 2006, it received international recognition for its patient
centered, evidence based care, by becoming the first hospital in Taiwan to be accredited
by JCI, the international arm of the Joint Commission, the body that certifies all hospitals

Introduction
NTUH was founded in 1895. It was initially located at Dadaocheng, Taipei, and then was
relocated to the present site in 1898 (now known as the West Campus). The building was
initially constructed out of timber and later underwent renovation in 1912 to become
a tropical renaissance-style building. When completed in 1921, it was the largest and
most modern hospital in Southeast Asia. In 1991, a new building (now known as the East
Campus) was completed and the two campuses were connected via the underground Jing-
Fu Tunnel. Currently, the hospital employs just over 6,000 workers, has roughly 2,400 beds
and serves over 8,000 outpatients daily. In 2000, as authorized by the Executive Yuan,
NTUH added the 817th Military Hospital as its Kungkuan Campus.
In April 2004, the Department of Health Yun-Lin Hospital underwent institutional
changes to become the Yun-Lin Branch of NTUH. In August of the same year, National
Taipei College of Nursing Hospital also underwent institutional changes to become
the Bei-Hu Branch of NTUH. In 2008, the Children’s Hospital was opened. In 2009, the
Kungkuan Campus ceased operation as the NTU Cancer Center Hospital was being
built onsite. The North Coast Jin-Shan Hospital underwent institutional change to
become the Jin-Shan Branch of NTUH in 2010. The Hsin-Chu General Hospital and

Health of the Executive Yuan, underwent
institutional change to become the Hsin-
Chu and Chu-Tung Branch of NTUH in July
2011. As such, the healthcare system of
NTUH is growing larger and stronger by
the day to provide the general public with
comprehensive medical services.
Over the last hundred plus years since its founding, NTUH has nurtured countless
professionals in medicine, including medical students, specialists, pharmacists, nurses
and technicians. They have served all over the world, and have gained much prominence
with their outstanding performances. With respect to medical service, the quality of
NTUH’s clinical practice is well known and
highly trusted by the people of Taiwan.
NTUH's diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis
and cancer, organ transplantation, and its
pioneering research accomplishments in
biophotonics have also gained international
recognition.
As a national teaching hospital, NTUH is
shouldered with three major tasks: teaching,
research and service. In terms of teaching,
the hospital continues to collaborate with
the university's curriculum to nurture talent
in medicine and various specialties. In terms
of research, resources are being integrated
to establish core laboratories, which provide
colleagues with the best research facilities
and environment. In terms of service, all
services are oriented towards and centered
on patient safety; personalized care is emphasized, with a focus on medical quality and
patient safety management in order to provide high-quality and refined medical services.
NTUH is also committed to promoting international cooperation, thereby gaining the
experience and knowledge from the medical development of advanced countries, and thus
enhancing the development of Taiwan’s own medical care.
Specialty
For more than a hundred years since its founding, NTUH has been providing the people
of Taiwan with high-quality and empathetic medical services. RD and improvement of
various new medical technologies have all enhanced patients’ well-being, especially in the
past 10 years. The success of NTUH’s medical care services lies in its prompt and effective
use of the latest medical knowledge to improve the care of patients and thus prevent
diseases. NTUH demands four characteristics in its medical care services:
1.Medical care must take into account
the patient’s physical, psychological
genetic and social aspects, offering
holistic care.
2.Medical care must begin from a
humanitarian standpoint, with the
heart of a Bodhisattva and the mind of
an angel.
3.Medical care is not simply about
the patient, but the patient's living
environment, background, and society
should also be taken into account to
further understand the illness and seek
preventive measures.
4.Medical care should involve the
overall cooperation of physicians,
nurses, pharmacists, medical
technicians, physiotherapists and
occupational therapists and other
medical personnel of various
specialties so as to achieve the
objective of comprehensive treatment
and prevention.
In order to pursue higher quality of medical care and a better environment for patients,
to create the best teaching environment for students, and to enhance the health of the
Taiwan public, the NTUH proactively participated in the Joint Commission International
(JCI) Accreditation process in 2009, and was granted accreditation in April, 2010 by JCI. The
NTUH will continue to uphold its philosophy of “patient-centeredness” medical services to
provide the most ideal and loving medical care of the highest quality. It is hoped that these
efforts will enable the NTUH to set an example of medical care not only in Taiwan but also
in Southeast Asia.

Introduction
Taipei City Hospital is a full-service, total care medical institution that is prepared to meet
the comprehensive healthcare needs of Taipei's 2.6 million residents. The merger of ten
municipal hospitals into one unit has made the Taipei City Hospital the largest healthcare
organization in northern Taiwan. Each hospital is referred to as the respective branch of the
central organization; for example, Taipei City Hospital – Renai Branch.
The purpose of this merger was not only
to improve hospital and community-based
healthcare but also to rebuild Taipei City’s
entire public healthcare system. The theme
of this reform was the creation of a “Total
Care System”, namely a network that begins
caring for an individual from before they are
born until they are elderly. To do this, we
seek to instill a new sense of healthy living,
to facilitate a healthier environment, and to
integrate healthcare into the community.
Taiwan City Hospital
Taipei City Hospital is changing the way that people seek medical treatment in our fair city. In the
past, people often sought unnecessary critical care at the hospital level, thus adversely affecting
the quality of service provided at top-level institutions, while leaving lower-level care providers
with little to do. Community-based healthcare is the focus of our reform and we are actively
encouraging citizens to first seek out local clinics and pharmacies to treat minor illness and
discomfort. This system allows for referrals to higher-level treatment if necessary and reduces the
strain on hospitals and specialty-care institutions. In doing so, we can ensure that a higher level
of quality healthcare is provided to all citizens.
By combining human resources and medical resources, it has been possible to reduce overhead,
eliminate duplicate positions, and simplify procedures. Unifying the logistics of running medical
institutions and creating bulk purchasing, has resulted in lower costs for everything from office
supplies to pharmaceutical products to medical equipment; saving the city’s residents billions
of dollars. New technology platforms have allowed hospital administration to access medical
information necessary to aid life-critical decisions remotely from anywhere that has an Internet
connection.
It is our goal to align local attitudes toward healthcare system with those of other first-world
nations. Moreover, we aim to rebuild the public healthcare system in a way that emphasizes
preventive medicine, long-term care, rehabilitation, and total care. Taipei City Hospital system
is dedicated to ensuring the health of all citizens, as well as bringing about improvements in
prenatal healthcare, adolescent healthcare, adult care, long-term care and care for the aged.

love in the saying, When others are hurt, we feel the pain; when others suffer, we feel
the sorrow.” More than 220 Tzu Chi volunteers serve at the Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital daily at
various locations, where they convey Tzu Chi's great love to every patient and the families.
This unceasing stream of selfless compassion flows through the entire hospital. Tzu Chi
volunteers' dedication is a great resource for this medical team.
Having gone through many obstacles and challenges, Taipei Tzu Chi General Hospital stands
firmly in the Taipei metropolitan landscape, brimming with its humanistic spirit, first-
class medical team, and advanced medical technologies. We anticipate every member of
the extraordinary team to embody our founder Master Cheng Yen's great compassion in

Introduction
●Placement for Veterans in Hard Times
After retreating to Taiwan, the government had to settle 17,000 odd servicemen
who were with pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic diseases, or mental diseases or
were discharged year by year from service. Veterans General Hospital was then
founded on July 1, 1958, in Shipai District of Taipei and was officially opened
on November 1, 1959, with 600 beds to take care of the diseased veterans.
●Inheritance from National Defense Medical Center
General Chih-te Lu, President of National Defense Medical Center, invited many faculty
members to collaborate on the design and construction
of Veterans General Hospital when he was delegated
concurrently as the first superintendent of the hospital
to steer the ad hoc committee. Aside from giving
these faculties and resources for medical research and
education to VGH, integration the school and VGH into
one. The impartial backup from the school ignited the
subsequent roaring development of VGH.
●Chiang Ching-kuo’s Five Directives
In 1959, Late President Ching-kuo Chiang, the Minister of the Veterans Affairs Commission,
outlined his vision for VGH to strive for, “the state-of-the-art equipment, the top-notch
physicians, the highest ethics, the most beautiful environment and the best management.”
His dream has fully come true, after several decades of the endeavor made by our hard-
working staff to succeed in taking the lead in Taiwan and winning prestige in the world of
medicine.
vision
To be the first choice of citizens seeking
healthcare services, and to rank as a first
class international medical center.
Core Values
To care for patients as if they were our own
family, to seek excellence, to maintain ethical
behavior, to uphold the law, and to keep our
word.
Goals
Provide safe and quality patient-centered
healthcare.
Strive to be the center of excellence for
education and at the forefront of medical
research.
Embrace flexible management, with the goal
of making Taipei Veterans General Hospital
an ongoing, long-lasting undertaking.
Specialty
Cardiac Arrhythmia Team
Under the guidance of Professor Shih-Ann Chen, the Cardiac Arrhythmia Team in Taipei
VGH has made an outstanding academic achievement and has been recognized as an
international pioneer and leader in the field of catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF).
To date, the team members have performed over 3,000 cases of AF ablation and have
discovered numerous novel electrophysiologic mechanisms and ablation techniques for
atrial fibrillation (AF) treatment. The contribution from Professor Chen's team has indeed
led to a new era in the management of atrial fibrillation.
Taipei Veterans General Hospital
We strive to create a new horizon in the field of atrial fibrillation ablation and shall continue
to lead the world to higher accomplishments.
Outstanding Achievement:
●The team has been invited to demonstrate complex atrial fibrillation ablation for 40
patients over 12 countries and provides technological support to those medical
institutes for AF treatment.
●Over 200 international doctors were attracted to the Taipei VGH from Asia Pacific, USA,
and Europe to learn the skills and techniques of AF ablation.
●A long-term successful rate of AF ablation is higher than many well-known international
centers.
●The procedure-related complication rate is lower than the published international registry
data.
Musculoskeletal Team
Under the guidance of Professor Tain-Hsiung Chen and Professor Wei-Ming Chen, more
than 60% of musculoskeletal tumor patients in Taiwan were treated in the “Therapeutical
and Research Center of Musculoskeletal Tumor” of Taipei VGH in recent 10 years.
Currently, we treated more than 500 cases of
high-grade osteosarcoma, thousands of malignant
bone tumors and soft tissue sarcoma. In the
surgical respect, we develop numerous innovating
surgical techniques such as hemicortical resection,
hemicondylar resection, trident knee fusion and
bone-prosthetic composite. The excellent results
were presented in several famous international
journals and seminar.
We are pioneers in investigating the gene mutation sequence of mesenchymal stem cell,
which could transform to osteosarcoma tumor cell. It has reached a milestone in gene
therapy regarding bone tumors.
The center has led the medical field into a new era in biological reconstruction:
●Unique patients about cryotherapy for treating musculoskeletal tumors, benign bone
tumor, and bony metastasis.
●Treatment of chordoma, which is rare and always compromise the nerve function to
cause pain, decrease limbs function and bowel/bladder function.
●Treatment of tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT), where surgical resection is associated
with potentially worsening functional limitation or severe morbidity.
●Recycled autografts for biological reconstruction of bone sarcoma.
Headache Medical Team
Professor Shuu-Jiun Wang established, in collaboration with Professor Jong-Ling Fuh, the
Headache Team at Taipei VGH in 1996. By accumulating experience in operations to resolve
headaches for 20 years, the Taipei VGH Headache Team has become one of the most
renowned and respected medical groups worldwide in both clinical service and academic
achievement in the field of headache medicine.
Since then, the Headache Clinic of Taipei VGH has been providing services to more than
2,000 new patients each year and over 20,000 new patients in total. The Headache Team
provided standardized treatment protocols for patients with medication overuse headache
and other headache disorders. The treatment response rates are comparable to those of
other top headache centers in the world.
The headache team is now extending research work into the fields of headache genetics,
animal models, functional neuroimaging, and electrophysiology. In the future, we will
continue to provide state-of-the-art clinical services for patients in Taiwan and from other
parts of the world as well as perpetuate the enthusiasm for research work toward a
headache-free era.
Outstanding Achievement:
●Epidemiological studies in chronic daily headache in adolescents.
●Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndromes (thunderclap headaches).
●Heavily T2-weighted magnetic resonance myelography in spontaneous intracranial
hypotension (low-pressure headaches).
Epilepsy Surgery Team
Prof. Yang-Hsin Shih established the epilepsy surgery team in 1987 after he completed the
fellowship at the Montreal Neurological Institute, one of the most famous epilepsy centers
in the world.
The features of the seizure evaluation consist of three phases based on patients’ condition,
including pre-surgical non-invasive evaluation, invasive evaluation, and intra-operative
evaluation and monitor.
Through meticulous teamwork, we have accumulated a substantial amount of clinical
service and many outstanding academic achievements in the past 30 years. In the future,
we will keep providing the highest quality of medical service to the patients all over the
world. We sincerely hope to provide patients with epilepsy a brand-new life that is free
from seizures.
Outstanding Achievem ent:
●We have the highest, positive post-operation outcomes in the world.
●The first established epilepsy surgery team with the largest population of patients
receiving epilepsy surgeries in Taiwan.

  • 3. Specialty ●Health Examination Center ●Center for Human Appearance ●Comprehensive Breast Center (1)Mammographic Screening (2)Breast ultrasound (3)MRI (Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging) ●Dentistry ●Neurosurgery (1)Minimal invasive spinal cord preservative surgery: The primary role of the spine is not only to protect the spinal cord and maintain the normal function of nerve roots but also to support the body’s posture and movement. Local herniated intervertebral discs, spur formations, and thickened ligaments account for the major causes of myelopathies/radiculopathies. To preserve the normal function of the spine and reduce morbidities, surgical intervention for the aforementioned causes should focus on minimal normal tissue destruction and effective removal of lesions. (2)Motion Preservation- Surgery of the Spine 1.Improve the problems of disc herniation, spinal degeneration, tumor or neuropathy caused by compression of the cervical spinal cord or nerve root. 2.Improve the cervical instability caused by trauma or fracture (3)Microvascular decompressive surgery Microvascular decompressive (MVD) surgery approaches the facial nerve (CN VII) or trigeminal nerve (CN V) through an incision made 2~3 cm post-auricle. The nerve of interest will be dissected away from the compressing vessel(s), thus relieving the symptoms of facial spasm or trigeminal neuralgia on the side of surgery. This surgical technique has a success rate of over 90% with only rare instances of serious post-operation complications. ●Orthopedics (1)Total Hip Replacement(THR) The hip joints (articulation coxa) stand the strongest force in all skeleton of our body. In THR surgery, we use alloys as a substitute for hip joints with necrosis. According to the principles of mechanics, you can use an entirely new artificial joint to do the daily activities after THR. (2)Radiofrequency Thermocoagulation The heat and the wavelength generate from the electromagnetic waves will work on the human nervous tissue and reduce the pain. • 8. Department of Dentistry The Department of Dentistry was set up at the time the Cathay General Hospital was established back in 1977. At that time, we had five subdivisions, i.e., Endodontics, Oral surgery, Pedodontics and Orthodontics, Periodontics, and Prosthodontics. We provided one of the best dental services not only for the residence in the neighborhood but the whole of Taiwan. As the years gone by, we expanded to 9 department, these are Endodontics, Family dentistry, Oral Implantology, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, Pedodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, and Dentistry for special needs. So, other than tradition dental treatments, we provide comprehensive dental treatment for our patients. The Endodontic Department is dealing with the diseases involving dental pulp, which caused severe sharp/dull pain. Dentists have to work in a small area in the root canal and is very time consuming. Patients with the disease suffer greatly. So we brought a microscope into our department in 2004, which allowed our treatment process to become more precise, efficient, and less inconvenient for the patients. The family dentistry provides services that included ordinary cavity fillings, teeth cleaning and single crown restorations and simple dental bridges for patients. The dental implant treatment started very early in our hospital; we specially formed a team for this treatment in 1989, with the department of oral surgery and periodontics installing the implants and the department of prosthodontics providing restorative methods. In addition to ordinary implant treatments, we also provide sinus lifting, guided bone regeneration, monocoritcal bone block grafting, and more. The services of the Department of Oral Surgery included extraction, minor oral surgery, and major oral cancer treatment. Our team leader, Professor Lai of KMU, has been in charge of orthognathic surgical treatment since 1984. So far, we have done about 2000 surgeries. Orthodontic treatment is one of our original services for the patients since the medical center was established. We provide basic orthodontic treatment and adult orthodontic treatment in combination with orthognathic treatment. Starting from 2013, we have added INVISILIN into our daily practice. Pedodontic treatment is treating children under 15 years old, either with ordinary or dental phobia children. Department of Periodontics deals with diseases related to tooth supporting tissues, either using non-surgical or with surgical treatments. We offer guided tissue regeneration treatment since 1986 and implant treatment since 1989. Prosthodontics emphasizes restorative works. The works included complicated crown bridge works, full mouth reconstruction, esthetic dentistry, and more. The department of dentistry also provides treatment for special needs and handicapped patients, and autism. Although we have many subspecialties, the communication between departments is never a problem. Our strength lies in the efficient interdisciplinary treatment. Radiology Our radiology department consisting of general radiology, special (fluoroscopic) radiology, emergent radiology, computed tomography (CT), including CT urography, coronary CTA and 3DCAT to show the relation of the tumor and vessels, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), mammography including tumor localization, ultrasonography (US), health imaging studies and image-guided interventional radiology to provide complete modern imaging and therapeutic services. The interventional services include transarterial embolization (TAE) and transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) of hepatocellular carcinoma, transarterial embolization (TAE) of internal bleeding, image-guided percutaneous biopsy, aspiration and drainage of the abscess. Health Examination Center Medical Imaging Healthcare Center Over a hundred years ago, Dr. Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen discovered the X-ray, which allowed us to see inside the body and opened up a new era of medical imaging diagnosis. Today, technological advancements are changing our everyday lives. Newer and faster computers and imaging diagnoses allow medical imaging diagnosis to detect early stage of cancer, vascular lesions, which can vastly improve treatment effects and outcome. Our ultimate goal of achieving total health and diseases prevention is becoming a reality. The Taiwanese people’s most common great diseases include various kinds of cancers, cerebrovascular apoplexy, and cardiovascular disease. In line with the development of global medical imaging technology, methods of investigating diseases are constantly updated and increases the opportunities for early diagnoses by a large margin. For increasing the effectiveness of medical treatment, the Cathay Medical Imaging Healthcare Center was instituted in particular. 1.The most advanced medical imaging instruments: Positron Emission Tomography/ Computed Tomography, 640- multi-slice computer tomography and 1.5T-magnetic resonance imaging provide comprehensive imaging healthcare service. ●Whole Body PET/CT ●Low Dose Lung CT ●Coronary Calcium Scoring ●3D-Cardiac CTA ●Whole Body MRI/Low Dose Lung CT ●Whole Body MRI Brain+Neck MRA/Low Dose Lung CT Head MRI/Brain Neck MRA ●Breast MRI ●Whole Spine MRI 1.A first-class medical center that is managed by specialists, nurses, and technicians from the Cathay General Hospital. 2.Efficient and precise diagnosis from hi-tech equipment administrated by specialists. 3.Kind and considerate services by professional nurses and physicians that make health examination easy and worry free. 4.Systematic services with detailed explanation provided by specialists after all inspection and follow-up treatment arranged, if necessary.

It was initially located at Dadaocheng, Taipei, and then was relocated to the present site in 1898 (now known as the West Campus). The building was initially constructed out of timber and later underwent renovation in 1912 to become a tropical renaissance-style building. When completed in 1921, it was the largest and most modern hospital in Southeast Asia. In 1991, a new building (now known as the East Campus) was completed and the two campuses were connected via the underground Jing- Fu Tunnel. Currently, the hospital employs just over 6,000 workers, has roughly 2,400 beds and serves over 8,000 outpatients daily. In 2000, as authorized by the Executive Yuan, NTUH added the 817th Military Hospital as its Kungkuan Campus. In April 2004, the Department of Health Yun-Lin Hospital underwent institutional changes to become the Yun-Lin Branch of NTUH. In August of the same year, National Taipei College of Nursing Hospital also underwent institutional changes to become the Bei-Hu Branch of NTUH. In 2008, the Children’s Hospital was opened. In 2009, the Kungkuan Campus ceased operation as the NTU Cancer Center Hospital was being built onsite. They have served all over the world, and have gained much prominence with their outstanding performances. With respect to medical service, the quality of NTUH’s clinical practice is well known and highly trusted by the people of Taiwan. NTUH's diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis and cancer, organ transplantation, and its pioneering research accomplishments in biophotonics have also gained international recognition. In terms of teaching, the hospital continues to collaborate with the university's curriculum to nurture talent in medicine and various specialties. In terms of research, resources are being integrated to establish core laboratories, which provide colleagues with the best research facilities and environment. In terms of service, all services are oriented towards and centered on patient safety; personalized care is emphasized, with a focus on medical quality and patient safety management in order to provide high-quality and refined medical services. NTUH is also committed to promoting international cooperation, thereby gaining the experience and knowledge from the medical development of advanced countries, and thus enhancing the development of Taiwan’s own medical care. Specialty For more than a hundred years since its founding, NTUH has been providing the people of Taiwan with high-quality and empathetic medical services. RD and improvement of various new medical technologies have all enhanced patients’ well-being, especially in the past 10 years. The success of NTUH’s medical care services lies in its prompt and effective use of the latest medical knowledge to improve the care of patients and thus prevent diseases. NTUH demands four characteristics in its medical care services: 1.Medical care must take into account the patient’s physical, psychological genetic and social aspects, offering holistic care. 2.Medical care must begin from a humanitarian standpoint, with the heart of a Bodhisattva and the mind of an angel. 3.Medical care is not simply about the patient, but the patient's living environment, background, and society should also be taken into account to further understand the illness and seek preventive measures. 4.Medical care should involve the overall cooperation of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, medical technicians, physiotherapists and occupational therapists and other medical personnel of various specialties so as to achieve the objective of comprehensive treatment and prevention.
  • 20. In order to pursue higher quality of medical care and a better environment for patients, to create the best teaching environment for students, and to enhance the health of the Taiwan public, the NTUH proactively participated in the Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation process in 2009, and was granted accreditation in April, 2010 by JCI. The NTUH will continue to uphold its philosophy of “patient-centeredness” medical services to provide the most ideal and loving medical care of the highest quality. It is hoped that these efforts will enable the NTUH to set an example of medical care not only in Taiwan but also in Southeast Asia. The merger of ten municipal hospitals into one unit has made the Taipei City Hospital the largest healthcare organization in northern Taiwan. Each hospital is referred to as the respective branch of the central organization; for example, Taipei City Hospital – Renai Branch. The purpose of this merger was not only to improve hospital and community-based healthcare but also to rebuild Taipei City’s entire public healthcare system. The theme of this reform was the creation of a “Total Care System”, namely a network that begins caring for an individual from before they are born until they are elderly. To do this, we seek to instill a new sense of healthy living, to facilitate a healthier environment, and to integrate healthcare into the community. Taiwan City Hospital
  • 24. Taipei City Hospital is changing the way that people seek medical treatment in our fair city. In the past, people often sought unnecessary critical care at the hospital level, thus adversely affecting the quality of service provided at top-level institutions, while leaving lower-level care providers with little to do. Community-based healthcare is the focus of our reform and we are actively encouraging citizens to first seek out local clinics and pharmacies to treat minor illness and discomfort. This system allows for referrals to higher-level treatment if necessary and reduces the strain on hospitals and specialty-care institutions. In doing so, we can ensure that a higher level of quality healthcare is provided to all citizens. By combining human resources and medical resources, it has been possible to reduce overhead, eliminate duplicate positions, and simplify procedures. Unifying the logistics of running medical institutions and creating bulk purchasing, has resulted in lower costs for everything from office supplies to pharmaceutical products to medical equipment; saving the city’s residents billions of dollars. New technology platforms have allowed hospital administration to access medical information necessary to aid life-critical decisions remotely from anywhere that has an Internet connection. It is our goal to align local attitudes toward healthcare system with those of other first-world nations. Moreover, we aim to rebuild the public healthcare system in a way that emphasizes preventive medicine, long-term care, rehabilitation, and total care. Taipei City Hospital system is dedicated to ensuring the health of all citizens, as well as bringing about improvements in prenatal healthcare, adolescent healthcare, adult care, long-term care and care for the aged. • 34. Introduction ●Placement for Veterans in Hard Times After retreating to Taiwan, the government had to settle 17,000 odd servicemen who were with pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic diseases, or mental diseases or were discharged year by year from service. Veterans General Hospital was then founded on July 1, 1958, in Shipai District of Taipei and was officially opened on November 1, 1959, with 600 beds to take care of the diseased veterans. ●Inheritance from National Defense Medical Center General Chih-te Lu, President of National Defense Medical Center, invited many faculty members to collaborate on the design and construction of Veterans General Hospital when he was delegated concurrently as the first superintendent of the hospital to steer the ad hoc committee. Aside from giving these faculties and resources for medical research and education to VGH, integration the school and VGH into one. The impartial backup from the school ignited the subsequent roaring development of VGH. ●Chiang Ching-kuo’s Five Directives In 1959, Late President Ching-kuo Chiang, the Minister of the Veterans Affairs Commission, outlined his vision for VGH to strive for, “the state-of-the-art equipment, the top-notch physicians, the highest ethics, the most beautiful environment and the best management.” His dream has fully come true, after several decades of the endeavor made by our hard- working staff to succeed in taking the lead in Taiwan and winning prestige in the world of medicine. vision To be the first choice of citizens seeking healthcare services, and to rank as a first class international medical center. Core Values To care for patients as if they were our own family, to seek excellence, to maintain ethical behavior, to uphold the law, and to keep our word. Goals Provide safe and quality patient-centered healthcare. Strive to be the center of excellence for education and at the forefront of medical research. Embrace flexible management, with the goal of making Taipei Veterans General Hospital an ongoing, long-lasting undertaking. Specialty Cardiac Arrhythmia Team Under the guidance of Professor Shih-Ann Chen, the Cardiac Arrhythmia Team in Taipei VGH has made an outstanding academic achievement and has been recognized as an international pioneer and leader in the field of catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF). To date, the team members have performed over 3,000 cases of AF ablation and have discovered numerous novel electrophysiologic mechanisms and ablation techniques for atrial fibrillation (AF) treatment. The contribution from Professor Chen's team has indeed led to a new era in the management of atrial fibrillation. Taipei Veterans General Hospital
  • 35. We strive to create a new horizon in the field of atrial fibrillation ablation and shall continue to lead the world to higher accomplishments. Outstanding Achievement: ●The team has been invited to demonstrate complex atrial fibrillation ablation for 40 patients over 12 countries and provides technological support to those medical institutes for AF treatment. ●Over 200 international doctors were attracted to the Taipei VGH from Asia Pacific, USA, and Europe to learn the skills and techniques of AF ablation. ●A long-term successful rate of AF ablation is higher than many well-known international centers. ●The procedure-related complication rate is lower than the published international registry data. Musculoskeletal Team Under the guidance of Professor Tain-Hsiung Chen and Professor Wei-Ming Chen, more than 60% of musculoskeletal tumor patients in Taiwan were treated in the “Therapeutical and Research Center of Musculoskeletal Tumor” of Taipei VGH in recent 10 years. Currently, we treated more than 500 cases of high-grade osteosarcoma, thousands of malignant bone tumors and soft tissue sarcoma. In the surgical respect, we develop numerous innovating surgical techniques such as hemicortical resection, hemicondylar resection, trident knee fusion and bone-prosthetic composite. The excellent results were presented in several famous international journals and seminar. We are pioneers in investigating the gene mutation sequence of mesenchymal stem cell, which could transform to osteosarcoma tumor cell. It has reached a milestone in gene therapy regarding bone tumors. The center has led the medical field into a new era in biological reconstruction: ●Unique patients about cryotherapy for treating musculoskeletal tumors, benign bone tumor, and bony metastasis. ●Treatment of chordoma, which is rare and always compromise the nerve function to cause pain, decrease limbs function and bowel/bladder function. ●Treatment of tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT), where surgical resection is associated with potentially worsening functional limitation or severe morbidity. ●Recycled autografts for biological reconstruction of bone sarcoma. Headache Medical Team Professor Shuu-Jiun Wang established, in collaboration with Professor Jong-Ling Fuh, the Headache Team at Taipei VGH in 1996. By accumulating experience in operations to resolve headaches for 20 years, the Taipei VGH Headache Team has become one of the most renowned and respected medical groups worldwide in both clinical service and academic achievement in the field of headache medicine. Since then, the Headache Clinic of Taipei VGH has been providing services to more than 2,000 new patients each year and over 20,000 new patients in total. The Headache Team provided standardized treatment protocols for patients with medication overuse headache and other headache disorders. The treatment response rates are comparable to those of other top headache centers in the world. The headache team is now extending research work into the fields of headache genetics, animal models, functional neuroimaging, and electrophysiology. In the future, we will continue to provide state-of-the-art clinical services for patients in Taiwan and from other parts of the world as well as perpetuate the enthusiasm for research work toward a headache-free era. Outstanding Achievement: ●Epidemiological studies in chronic daily headache in adolescents. ●Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndromes (thunderclap headaches). ●Heavily T2-weighted magnetic resonance myelography in spontaneous intracranial hypotension (low-pressure headaches). Epilepsy Surgery Team Prof. Yang-Hsin Shih established the epilepsy surgery team in 1987 after he completed the fellowship at the Montreal Neurological Institute, one of the most famous epilepsy centers in the world. The features of the seizure evaluation consist of three phases based on patients’ condition, including pre-surgical non-invasive evaluation, invasive evaluation, and intra-operative evaluation and monitor. Through meticulous teamwork, we have accumulated a substantial amount of clinical service and many outstanding academic achievements in the past 30 years. In the future, we will keep providing the highest quality of medical service to the patients all over the world. We sincerely hope to provide patients with epilepsy a brand-new life that is free from seizures. Outstanding Achievem ent: ●We have the highest, positive post-operation outcomes in the world. ●The first established epilepsy surgery team with the largest population of patients receiving epilepsy surgeries in Taiwan.
