2. Capitol, Location, and
Population!
● The capitol of South Dakota is Pierre.
● It is in north-central United
States, it is considered in the
Midwest region of the country.
● As of 2013 the population
count was 844,877 people
living in the state.
3. History
● Exploration of this state began in 1743, when
Louis-Joseph and François Verendrye came over
from France. They were looking for a new route to
the Pacific.
● The U.S. acquired the region as part of the
Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
● Fort Pierre, the first permanent settlement, it
was established in 1817.
5. Industry and Climate
● Tourism is the second largest industry in South
Dakota. In 2006, travelers spent nearly $865
million across the state.
● South Dakota has an interior continental climate,
with hot summers, really cold winters, high
winds, and occasional droughts.
● The normal January temperature is 12°F
The normal July temperature, 74°F
6. Natural Resources and Current Events!
● Granite, clays, limestone, crushed stone, sand and
gravel, and petroleum are South Dakota's most
important mined products.
● Other mined products are gypsum and natural gas.
● South Dakota on 9/29/14 became what's "believed to
be the first state to pass a law that specifically allows
teachers to carry firearms.”

Overall South Dakota is right in the middle of
the state, in the northern central section of the
country. South Dakota is home to Mount
Rushmore and many other landmarks of the
United States. Also this state was home to
many famous people!
