6. At 9:45 p.m. on may 4, 2007,
greensburg was hit by a ef5
tornado. the tornado was esti-
mated to be 1.7 miles in width
and traveled for nearly 22
miles. Ninety-five percent of the
city was confirmed to be desto-
ryed, with the other five per-
cent being severely damaged.
Our objective was to create
affordable and customizable
housing units that are easy to
erect. These self contained
modules delivered urgently
after a disaster provide immedi-
ate refugee housing and can be
changed and customized as the
owners make the shift from tem-
porary to permanent housing.

at the end of the gardens the water free falls into a pool by the southwest

design focus
The Center for the Rehabilitation of Planet Earth is an aquarium and educa-
tional facility that actively cleans and uses river water for cooling purposes as
well as maintaining the aquariums and other water features.
The design process began as an effort to introduce new sustainable public
transportation into the downtown Kansas City area. A majority of design deci-
sions were made with the mindset of being sustainable.

Butterfly garden located to the north serves as a haven for the migratory
Monarch Butterfly. Monarch butterflies can travel thousands of miles in a sea-
son. How the species manages to return to the same overwintering spots over
a gap of several generations is still a subject of research; the flight patterns
appear to be inherited, based on a combination of circadian rhythm and the posi-
tion of the sun in the sky.
