Chimpanzee Growth Stages
1.
2. A newborn chimp is tiny
. As it grows, the
newborn becomes a
juvenile. The juvenile
continues to grow until it
is mature, or an adult.
An adult chimp is ready
to mate.
3. A newborn drinks from it’s
mother’s body. Young chimps
stay close to their mothers for
the first five years of their
lives. Mother chimpanzees
carry their babies wherever
they go. Mother chimps teach
their babies a lot of
skills, such as how to find
food and how to build a nest.
If a mother chimpanzee
dies, another female chimp
may care for her babies. This
female then becomes the
baby chimps mother.
4. A chimp becomes a
juvenile at about five
years of age. It no longer
needs nursing. A juvenile
spends most of its time
playing. Juvenile chimps
are very social . Once in a
while they spend a lot of
time grooming each
others hair.
5. Female chimpanzees are
mature at thirteen to
fourteen years old. Males
are mature between ten
and thirteen years of age.
Chimpanzees live for
many years after they are
mature. They can live for
4o-50 years.
6. Chimpanzees live in rainforests.
Rainforests are home to all the
world’s apes, but their territories can
be from rainforests to dry
grasslands, or even desert like areas.
You’ll find more chimpanzees in wet
areas than dry.
Chimpanzees live in groups called
communities. They share the same
territory. The community is usually
controlled by the dominant male
Chimpanzees spend most of their
time in the trees, depending on the
season and the forest covering.
Unlike gorillas, which make nests on
the ground out of branches and
leaves, and use the same nest every
night, chimpanzees make beds in
the trees. Each chimp sleeps in a
new bed each night.
