One example of a leading Ontario R&D centre is
the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR),
an independent, not-for-profit translational
cancer research institute funded by the
Government of Ontario.
OICR’s focus is on the translation of discoveries

practice related to cancer prevention, early
detection, diagnosis and treatment.

technology and R&D collaboration.
Cisco is investing in major R&D projects;
increased research and development work in
the province; and is helping both businesses

Also in 2011, GE opened its first
global Pathology Innovation Centre of
Excellence (PICOE), located in Toronto.
This new centre has the potential to
revolutionize pathology through digital
innovation.

In 2012 Ontario and IBM Canada announced a
partnership with several leading Ontario universities.
The partnership includes creating a new
$210-million, world-class virtual research and
development centre. The IBM Canada Research
