Cryogenic liquids are frequently used in research labs, and liquid nitrogen is one of them. The word “cryogenic” itself refers to very low temperatures; it is an extremely cold material. It should only be stored in well-ventilated areas, and hence impact resistant containers that can withstand extremely low temperatures should be used. Materials such as carbon steel, plastic and rubber become brittle at these temperatures, so stainless steel works the best over here.

2. • Cryogenic liquids are frequently used in research labs, and
liquid nitrogen is one of them. The word “cryogenic” itself refers
to very low temperatures; it is an extremely cold material. It
should only be stored in well-ventilated areas, and hence impact
resistant containers that can withstand extremely low temperatures
should be used. Materials such as carbon steel, plastic and rubber
become brittle at these temperatures, so stainless steel works the
best over here.
3. • Liquid nitrogen containers are tanks composed of stainless steel
containers to withstand low temperatures, and on the outside carbon
steel is isolated from each other, by a combination of high vacuum
and insulating material. They contain gaseous nitrogen, which has
been cooled to liquefy and changed to a cryogenic liquid state.
Liquid nitrogen containers are made up of 1-cm thick styrofoam
sheets having a thermal conductivity of 0.025Js-1m-10c-1.
4. • Liquid oxygen is a cryogenic liquid. The term “cryogenic liquid”
refers to liquefied gases with normal boiling points lower than –
130°F (-90°C). Liquid oxygen has a boiling point of -297°F (-
183°C). Liquid oxygen must be protected from ambient heat since
there is a significant temperature difference between the product
and its surroundings, even in the cold. Additionally, the commodity
needs specialized handling and storage equipment.
5. • Depending on the quantity needed by the user, liquid oxygen is
stored, transported, and handled in a variety of different types of
containers. The cryogenic storage tank, cryogenic liquid cylinder,
and dewars are examples of container types in use.
• Liquid oxygen tanks, also known as LOX tanks, are designed to
safely store and transport liquid oxygen, which is a cryogenic
liquid with a boiling point of -183 degrees Celsius (-297 degrees
Fahrenheit). These tanks are typically used in various industries,
including aerospace, medical, and industrial applications. The
specific design of these tanks may vary depending on their size,
capacity and purpose.
6. STRUCTURE OF A LIQUID NITROGEN
CONTAINER:
• A vessel with two layers — an outer chamber and an inner chamber
— is a liquid nitrogen container. The outer chamber covers all
parts of the container. The neck is the point of entry from the
inner chamber into the outer chamber. The wall of the inner chamber
is made of high-quality insulating material and is a bad conductor
of heat. A vacuum is created between the outer and inner chamber
and the space in between is filled with insulating material. If the
vacuum is broken, the liquid nitrogen will boil and there would be
a rapid loss of liquid nitrogen from the inner chamber.
7. • The neck region prevents the exchange of heat from outside to the
inner chamber and thereby the fast evaporation of liquid nitrogen
is prevented. The addition of liquid nitrogen to the container
leads to a considerable increase in weight load which should be
supported by the neck tube. The interior chamber will vibrate due
to abrupt movements and jerks. The inner chamber’s side-to-side
movement will harm the neck tube and result in mechanical damage.
Liquid nitrogen refrigerators are constructed in such a way the
three pathways of heat transfer, conduction, convection, and
radiation are minimized. The super vacuum between the chambers
prevents the transfer of heat through conduction and convection.
8. STRUCTURE OF LIQUID OXYGEN TANKS:
• The outer shell of the tank is made of a robust material such as
stainless steel or aluminum alloy. This shell provides structural
integrity and protection for the inner components. The tanks have
excellent insulation to minimize heat transfer and prevent the
oxygen from warming up and boiling off. The insulation materials
used can include multiple layers of materials such as perlite,
fiberglass, or vacuum panels. These insulation layers help maintain
the low temperature of the liquid oxygen inside the tank. The inner
vessel, also known as the inner tank or cryogenic vessel, is the
primary container that holds the liquid oxygen. It is typically
made of stainless steel or another material with high resistance to
low temperatures.
9. • The inner vessel is designed to withstand the extreme cold and
pressure exerted by the liquid oxygen. Liquid oxygen tanks include
a venting system to release excess pressure that may build up
inside the tank due to factors such as heat exposure or filling the
tank to its maximum capacity. The venting system allows the
controlled release of pressure, ensuring the safety of the tank.
• Liquid oxygen tanks are equipped with valves and fittings that
enable filling, emptying, and controlling the flow of liquid
oxygen. These components are designed to withstand the low
temperatures and high pressures associated with handling cryogenic
fluids. Pressure relief devices are essential safety features in
tanks. They are designed to automatically release excess pressure in
the event of an overpressure situation, preventing the tank from
rupturing.
10. • Liquid oxygen tanks may include various instruments and sensors
to monitor the temperature, pressure, and other relevant
parameters. This information helps ensure the proper functioning
and safety of the tank.
• Liquid nitrogen containers and liquid oxygen tanks are crucial
components in various industries, including healthcare,
biotechnology, food, and research. They play a vital role in
various industries, offering a reliable solution for storing and
transporting cryogenic substances at extremely low temperatures.
