4. FROM GARBAGE TO GARDEN
Though many people get fed up listening to the
word GARBAGE repeatedly, for us at IJC, GARBAGE
has become a blessing in disguise. How? Read…
5. For the last 3 years, all the wet waste like
vegetable waste, food waste, garden
waste, used tea powder etc generated by
Infant Jesus Church (IJC) and Infant Jesus
School are
used as
manure for
the terrace
Garden.
6. There are about 25 fruit bearing plants like
Chikoo, Govva, Pomegranate, Lemon,
Custard Apple etc. on our terrace garden.
7. Besides fruit trees,
leafy vegetables are
also grown on the
terrace garden
which has helped
to save the
Church kitchen
expenses.
8. As no chemicals, including
sprayers are used, the IJC terrace
garden has
become a
100% organic
garden.
9. All the dry waste
generated in the
school/church
Like papers, plastic,
metals, e-waste,
tetrapack etc are
sold to the scrape
dealers for reuse and recycling earning
some money which is used for a good
cause.
10. All the programmes held in the
church/school premises follow ZERO
GARBAGE policy. How see next..
11. The team of church caterers are
prohibited from using single use throw
away plates/glasses etc during wedding
parties or other programmes .
12. Mineral water bottles and glasses, and
plastic decorations etc. are not allowed
for any caterings in the Church campus
13. Instead of single use utensils
now caterers use reusable
plates, glasses, water
dispensers etc
14. Due to the ZERO GARBAGE POLICY of the
church (no mineral water, single use glass/plates
etc), the caterers admit that, their profits have
increased, though they had to invest some extra
money initially for reusable utensils.
15. This policy (NO TO PLASTIC
GLASS/PLATES/MINERAL WATER) applies to
all the programmes of various parish
groups held during the year
16. All SCC units are encouraged to follow parish eco-
friendly policy during their area wise programmes. A
set of reusable plates and glasses are being made
available by the parish for any area wise activity free
of cost. After the
use, they have to
simply wash and
wipe the
plates/glasses and
return to the
church. In fact,
some SCCs have
made their own arrangement for a permanent set of
reusable plates, glasses etc.
17. To prepare the
younger generation to
face the future
challenges of protecting
environment, our
parish has started the
SCC ECO KIDS CLUBS.
Since three years, kids
of all faiths meet every month in their respective SCC
areas, and take up various activities connected with
environment.

18. Change begins from awareness. The environment
problem affects not just few people, but all.
Therefore, the GEM (Green Earth Movement) e-
newsletters and
PowerPoint
Presentations (PPTs)
are regularly
circulated to help
to bring mass
awareness. These
PPTs and newsletters
are also uploaded in our Church/School website –
www.infantjesusjogeshwari.in
19. Other small eco-friendly activities which can
create ripple effect are:
Prizes and gifts are
given in the cloth bags,
instead of wrapping papers.
Instead of live
bouquets/flowers, reusable
Bouquets/flowers are given
to felicitate guests for
programmes/other
occasions.
Reusable flowers /backdrops are used for altar
wording/decorations and other church/school events.
20. Priests/nuns working
in the parish use public
transport or hire taxi/auto
etc for travels instead of
church possessing its own
vehicle.
Regular announcements
are made from the pulpit
during Sunday masses on
various environmental
activities held in the church.
Regular contests/online eco quizzes are being held for the
school students via Infant Nature Club WhatsApp group
Interesting quotes on environment are painted all
around in the church/school campus walls
21. The IJC/IJHS success was possible because
of 'one mind and one heart' of the IJC team
-priests, workers, office staff, teachers,
parents and parishioners.
In a small way we have
tried to implement the
teachings of Pope Francis
in his Encyclical on
environment 'Laudato Si‘.
