Good morning school today we will be talking to you about the new vegetable gardens and fruit trees
To build the garden we needed a lot of equipment such as; spades, stakes, gloves, watering cans, wheelbarrows and of corse lots of plants and trees
Michelle and Jane helped us with planting all the fruit trees. We have Orange, feijoa and an apple trees. Michelle and Jane told us the best way to grow the trees and how to keep them producing lots of fruit
We all had to help dig the holes to plant the trees. These holes had to be as big as the plants base and twice as wide. This was very hard and took us a while.
We had to remove the packaging that the trees come in. We had to be very careful when doing this because we did not want to damage any of the roots if we cut the roots, the tree could die. Once the packaging was cut we put the tree in the hole.
Once we had planted the trees we then had fill the holes with the soil that we dug out and add a little bit of compost. We learnt that when using compost we have to be careful and make sure that we only use it when wearing gloves and working outside. We then put a thick stick next to the tree. This is called a stake. The stake is tired to the tree and helps the tree to grow straight.
After the tree has been planted we had to water it. The tree needs a lot of water to make sure that it grows well.
In the sandpit area we used the planter boxes. The boxes were very deep so we add old plastic containers and then cardboard over top. This will break down and help the garden. Once this was done we added potting mix. We also learnt that when using potting mix you must wear gloves and wash your hands.
Jane explained to us how to take the vegetables out of their punnets. We learnt that there are different ways to take plants out of punnets. Some contains are separated like egg cartons. So you can use your fingers to push the plant out. Others we had to be careful when pulling them out especially not to damage the roots.
Mrs Bell came out and watched us for a little while she was happy with the work we had done
This image is of some the vegetable plants we planted.
Once we planted the vegetables we then had to make sure they were given a lot of water.
We had to add Quash around the outside of the box. We used this organic incest killer because it is safe for children and wont damage the plants. Quash is used to kill of any snails or slugs that will try and eat our plants
Later that day we cleared out the old planter boxes. Mrs Martin had already started to clear it out so out job was easier. We cleared all the sticks and pulled out all the weeds. Once this was done we planted cabbages, cauliflower, beetroot, spinach and a mixture of herbs.
