My SRH My Choice: Wading through University Student’s Engagement in High Risk Sexual Behavior and Curving the Way Forward
1. My SRH My Choice: Wading through University Student’s Engagement
in High Risk Sexual Behavior and Curving the Way Forward.
Presenter :
Mary Njeri Wanjau
Pan Africa Christian University Kenya, Kenya
3. Background of the study
High risk sexual behaviors (HRSB)
Global effort to curb HRSB among university
students
In Kenya most Universities have institutionalized
programs to deal with HRSB
HRSB continues to increase among University
students
4. Statistics indicate:
74.1% of the students were sexually active
Inconsistent condom use was at 12%
Sharing of partners was at 15.8%
Sex under influence of drug and substance abuse at
16.8%
Prevalence of STI’s at 4.2%
5. Problem statement
High risk sexual behavior culminate in sexually transmitted infection
(STI), including Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), unplanned
pregnancy and abortion (Johnson, 2011).
Bearing in mind the consequences of HRSB it threatens the health of
most students as they stand at risk of being infected with HIV and STI
increasing their morbidity and mortality rates among the young adults
who form a crucial population pillar for the economic and thus
threatening to the achievement of sustainable development of Kenya.
6. Purpose of the study
The purpose of the study was to assess students
engagement in high risk sexual behavior in the
university.
7. Objectives
1) To determine number of students who
engaged in HRSB due to influence of alcohol
and drugs.
2) To establish students consistency in
condom use.
3) To determine if students had multiple sexual
partners

13. Findings revealed that nearly three quarters of the students
engaged in lack of/inconsistent use of condom,
more than half reported to have sex under the influence of
alcohol and substance abuse and having multiple sex
partners which are in line with other literature and alarming
to the health and wellbeing of youths in the county.
This study proposes that there is need for reengineering in
the way students should be sensitized on consequences of
HRSB, strengthening capacity of reproductive health
workers, inventing creative programs and messages to the
students.
14. … “ Human sexuality is just as vital,
in fact the consequences of
skipping math are less
consequential than ignorance
about sexuality. The misuse of
algebra is not likely to cause an
unintended pregnancy….”
Don Ardell, 2002
