Understanding The Structural Web Process
Structural web also known as glass assist in some circles
is a method used to produce plastic parts. It works by
injecting low amounts of pressure in order to produce
varying hollow cross sections. The thickness will also
vary while at the same time providing an improved
appearance that is not only cosmetic in nature but it
also superior in terms of design and functionality.
In this process, nitrogen gas is injected immediately
after resin has been injected. The injection takes place in
the mold cavity. The nitrogen gas will assist in helping
push the plastic that has already been melted out of the
cavity walls.
Immediately after injection has been completed, it is
expected that it will follow the path known as least
resistance. When following this path, it works out all the
parts that are hollow in the cross sections. This is
important as it allows designers to create different types
of designs with the products.
This type of technology is highly favored by
manufacturers and people who work with plastic. It has
opened up a lot of new possibilities when it comes to
developing different types of parts. It has also helped
eliminate the limitations that were previously present.
When it comes to benefits associated with using this
product, there are quite a few of them. Weight has been
reduced by between ten to thirty percent. The reduction
in weight has also meant that the costs associated with
materials are now lower than before.
Products that are of a larger size can now be built using
many smaller parts. Each of these parts will play a
different function in the finished product. Producing
large parts from smaller components also means that
cost is greatly reduced while at the same time increasing
the efficiency of the end product.
The finished products made from this technology also
have a better appearance. The finishing is much
smoother and glossier than products made using other
types of technology. Low pressure parts for instance
have been known to have a finishing that is quite rough
and not so smooth.
Normal injection comes with very many limitations
especially in terms of what can be engineered and what
cannot be engineered. In glass assist products can be
made from a large combination of resins with a lot of
ease. Highly engineered resins and additives can also be
used in this particular type of production.
Addition of colors and textures was not quite possible
previously. The amount of money used in purchases of
materials was also high especially when it came to
colors. The rough textures meant that more color had to
be used in a part than was necessary. This is a factor that
has been done away with.
Structural web involves molding using low amounts of
pressure. This therefore means that less energy is
consumer for every pound of plastic that is produced
during manufacturing. The materials that are used in
this process are also very few and all this is possible
without compromising on the quality of the end
product.
