What is Alzheimer’s disease
• It is a Neurological degenerative brain disorder.
• Most common form of dementia.
• Start with late middle/old age of 70 ,but the
deteriorating lifestyle and increasing stress levels
among the people below the age of 40 can also lead to
this disease.
• It is a chronic irreversible disease and affect brain
cells, causing impairment of intellectual functioning.

Alzheimer’s Disease Management
• It is a progressive disease,reseach has been shown
that modification in healthy lifestyle and exercise are
the best tools to prevent and help to improve the
condition.
• Yoga is a method which is used both as
Complementary & Alternative medicine, for
management of AD.
• Yogic lifestyle & techniques like asana ,pranayam ,
shatkriya etc. improve phyco-neuro-immune function.
Yoga for Alzhiemer’s disease
• Asanas, along with the breathing exercises of
Pranayama, are the physical movements of hatha
yoga .
• Which increases the strength of body and awareness
of mind.
• Asanas are:
1. Vajraasana,
2. Sidhhasana ,
3. Paschimottanasana,
4. Vrikshaasana,
5. Shirshaasan.
1) Vajrasana
• Vajrasana helps to reduces the flow of
blood to the lower regions, increasing
circulation to the upper parts like
digestive system, lungs, and brain.
• It ensures better absorption of
nutrients by your body
• Also it is very useful for women
suffering from stress.
Benefit:
vajrasana helps improving digestive
system and increasing the blood
circulation so conditions like Loss of
appetite ,Infection ,malnutrition are
solve in patients with Alzheimer’s
disease.
Siddhaasna
• Siddhasana is the most suitable
pose for Meditation.
• This posture activates the Base
and Sacral Chakras.
• It helps in calm down the nervous
system and the activities of the
brain. The whole body
experiences the serenity.
• This posture helps develop
psychic powers and remote
healing, etc.
Benefit: Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease which has
symptoms like loss of memory, confusion and judgemental problem.
This asana is beneficial ,as it activate sacral chakras which helps to
keep the mind alert ,and help to reduce stress and anxiety.
Paschimoutthanasana
Benefit: Paschimoutthanasana helps in Alzheimer’s disease patient
with DM by regulate pancreas function and chronic neurological
disease which can lead to recurrent moderate to severe headaches
by improving the nervous system.
• It Stimulates the Solar Plexus
Chakra and therefore stimulates
and balances the functions of the
stomach, gallbladder, liver, spleen,
and pancreas ,Regulates blood
sugar levels, by regulating
pancreas function.
• Stretches the entire spine, tones
the spinal nerves.
• It improves sympathetic &
parasympathetic nervous system
Vrikshaasana
• It stimulates the Root Chakra
and therefore balances the
functions of the large intestines
and adrenals
• Strengthens your spine and
improves balance and helps in
neuro-muscular coordination
• Improves concentration and
mental function
.
Benefit :Alzheimer’s patients have problem with concentration.
This asana helps to bring balance to the body and mind and
increases the focus.
Precautions: Avoided by people having migraine,vertigo
Shirshashana
• The inverted posture of shirshaasna
directs increased blood flow to the .
Pituitary and hypothalamus, activated
areas of the brain. It is believed that
this improves their functions and the
total endocrine system.
• So there are chances for opening up of
closed vessels that may improve
memory, optimal concentration, and
improved mental tasks.
• The practice of Head Stand, activates
Crown Center. Hence it is one of the
techniques for Kundalini Activation.
Benefit: In Alzheimer’s disease due stress, hormonal imbalance
is seen ,so this asana helps to Stimulate endocrine glands and
release dopamine in right quantity ,which helps with depression
and anxiety.
Caution: It should be practised after gaining much balance.
Pranayama
• Pranayama is the regulation of the breath through
certain techniques and exercises.
• It's a type of yoga for breathing exercise that helps
reduce stress and improves mental clarity.
• Pranayamas can helps in AD are:
1. Bhramari pranayama (Bee breathing)
2. Nadi sudhhi pranayama (Alternate Nostril
Breathing)
Nadi sudhhi pranayam
Benefit: Chronic high blood pressure is the risk factor of patient with
Alzheimer’s disease this pranayama provides drop in your heart rate
stimulate the brain. and provide normalcy in blood circulation . Increases
the Prana or Vitality in the body, and Reducing mental illnesses
•There are the two nadis, nerve-currents one
on either side of the spinal cord. Surya nadi
is the right and Chandra nadi is the left
nostril.
•Slow and deep breathing exert profound
physiological effects on pulmonary,
cardiovascular, and mental functions of the
brain.
Nadi-shodana pranayama effect on heart
rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure,
also increases parasympathetic activity.
Bhramari pranayam(Bee breathing)
Benefit: The humming sound and vibrations helps to release
cerebral tension, this pranayama provide better sleep and it
soothes the nerves.
Bhramari pranayama (bee breathing) is
an especially good practice
for vishuddhi chakra, the throat center.
It activates cognitive senses associated
with this chakra.
It stimulates the pineal and pituitary
glands, thus supporting their proper
functioning..
DISCUSSION
• Alzheimer's disease is a progressive disease that destroys
memory and other important mental functions. It is a chronic
neurodegenerative disease which usually starts slowly and
worsens over time. Alzheimer's disease is the most common
cause of dementia, a group of brain disorders that cause the
loss of intellectual ,social skills,a steady decline in memory
and mental function.
• Current Alzheimer's disease medications like cholinesterase
inhibitor ,memantine and management strategies may
temporarily improve symptoms for a little while longer, , but
has its own side effects.
• Based on the condition of patient for managing the symptoms
the alternative treatment found beneficial for patient.
• Yoga therapy stimulate the different chakras is based
on the belief that your brain is the main operating
system in the human body, which processes sensory
information, regulates blood pressure, breathing and
releases hormones.
• The asana and pranayama which helps to stimulate
the Chakra associated with Alzheimer’s has the
primary function to controls central nervous system
• Pranayama is the tool that stimulates the brain and
increases level of oxygen in the body it helps in
improving concentration and memory, which has
been diminished in patient of Alzheimer’s disease.
CONCLUSION
• Alzheimer’s disease affects around 5 million people
usually affects people aged 65 years and over, 10%
cases occurring in people younger than this cases
• Yoga has also been found repeatedly by multiple
studies that it was efficacious for Alzheimer’s and
other forms of dementia as they engage different parts
of the brain based on the various components of the
practice, which commonly includes Pranayama,
Yogic Asana, Chanting, and different forms of
concentration.
• Pranayama activate the parasympathetic response.
which balancing the nervous system. The deep,
intentional breathing which accompanies the
poses removes blockages and serves to purify the
body, increasing prana flow.
• Asanas are to increase or maintain flexibility, muscle
strength, and balance and increase body awareness
• Yoga help the brain to form new connections through
the stimulation of neurons. Yoga has also been found
diminish stress, which has been shown to be a strong
correlate of Alzheimer’s disease.

What is Alzheimer’s disease • It is a Neurological degenerative brain disorder. • Most common form of dementia. • Start with late middle/old age of 70 ,but the deteriorating lifestyle and increasing stress levels among the people below the age of 40 can also lead to this disease. • It is a chronic irreversible disease and affect brain cells, causing impairment of intellectual functioning.

Alzheimer’s Disease Management • It is a progressive disease,reseach has been shown that modification in healthy lifestyle and exercise are the best tools to prevent and help to improve the condition. • Yoga is a method which is used both as Complementary & Alternative medicine, for management of AD. • Yogic lifestyle & techniques like asana ,pranayam , shatkriya etc. improve phyco-neuro-immune function.
  • 6. Yoga for Alzhiemer’s disease • Asanas, along with the breathing exercises of Pranayama, are the physical movements of hatha yoga . • Which increases the strength of body and awareness of mind. • Asanas are: 1. Vajraasana, 2. Sidhhasana , 3. Paschimottanasana, 4. Vrikshaasana, 5. Shirshaasan.
  • 7. 1) Vajrasana • Vajrasana helps to reduces the flow of blood to the lower regions, increasing circulation to the upper parts like digestive system, lungs, and brain. • It ensures better absorption of nutrients by your body • Also it is very useful for women suffering from stress. Benefit: vajrasana helps improving digestive system and increasing the blood circulation so conditions like Loss of appetite ,Infection ,malnutrition are solve in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

Siddhaasna • Siddhasana is the most suitable pose for Meditation. • This posture activates the Base and Sacral Chakras. • It helps in calm down the nervous system and the activities of the brain. The whole body experiences the serenity. • This posture helps develop psychic powers and remote healing, etc. Benefit: Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease which has symptoms like loss of memory, confusion and judgemental problem. This asana is beneficial ,as it activate sacral chakras which helps to keep the mind alert ,and help to reduce stress and anxiety.

Paschimoutthanasana Benefit: Paschimoutthanasana helps in Alzheimer’s disease patient with DM by regulate pancreas function and chronic neurological disease which can lead to recurrent moderate to severe headaches by improving the nervous system. • It Stimulates the Solar Plexus Chakra and therefore stimulates and balances the functions of the stomach, gallbladder, liver, spleen, and pancreas ,Regulates blood sugar levels, by regulating pancreas function. • Stretches the entire spine, tones the spinal nerves. • It improves sympathetic & parasympathetic nervous system

Vrikshaasana • It stimulates the Root Chakra and therefore balances the functions of the large intestines and adrenals • Strengthens your spine and improves balance and helps in neuro-muscular coordination • Improves concentration and mental function . Benefit :Alzheimer’s patients have problem with concentration. This asana helps to bring balance to the body and mind and increases the focus. Precautions: Avoided by people having migraine,vertigo
  • 11. Shirshashana • The inverted posture of shirshaasna directs increased blood flow to the . Pituitary and hypothalamus, activated areas of the brain. It is believed that this improves their functions and the total endocrine system. • So there are chances for opening up of closed vessels that may improve memory, optimal concentration, and improved mental tasks. • The practice of Head Stand, activates Crown Center. Hence it is one of the techniques for Kundalini Activation. Benefit: In Alzheimer’s disease due stress, hormonal imbalance is seen ,so this asana helps to Stimulate endocrine glands and release dopamine in right quantity ,which helps with depression and anxiety. Caution: It should be practised after gaining much balance.

Pranayama • Pranayama is the regulation of the breath through certain techniques and exercises. • It's a type of yoga for breathing exercise that helps reduce stress and improves mental clarity. • Pranayamas can helps in AD are: 1. Bhramari pranayama (Bee breathing) 2. Nadi sudhhi pranayama (Alternate Nostril Breathing)

Nadi sudhhi pranayam Benefit: Chronic high blood pressure is the risk factor of patient with Alzheimer’s disease this pranayama provides drop in your heart rate stimulate the brain. and provide normalcy in blood circulation . Increases the Prana or Vitality in the body, and Reducing mental illnesses •There are the two nadis, nerve-currents one on either side of the spinal cord. Surya nadi is the right and Chandra nadi is the left nostril. •Slow and deep breathing exert profound physiological effects on pulmonary, cardiovascular, and mental functions of the brain. Nadi-shodana pranayama effect on heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, also increases parasympathetic activity.
  • 14. Bhramari pranayam(Bee breathing) Benefit: The humming sound and vibrations helps to release cerebral tension, this pranayama provide better sleep and it soothes the nerves. Bhramari pranayama (bee breathing) is an especially good practice for vishuddhi chakra, the throat center. It activates cognitive senses associated with this chakra. It stimulates the pineal and pituitary glands, thus supporting their proper functioning..
  • 15. DISCUSSION • Alzheimer's disease is a progressive disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions. It is a chronic neurodegenerative disease which usually starts slowly and worsens over time. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, a group of brain disorders that cause the loss of intellectual ,social skills,a steady decline in memory and mental function. • Current Alzheimer's disease medications like cholinesterase inhibitor ,memantine and management strategies may temporarily improve symptoms for a little while longer, , but has its own side effects. • Based on the condition of patient for managing the symptoms the alternative treatment found beneficial for patient.
  • 16. • Yoga therapy stimulate the different chakras is based on the belief that your brain is the main operating system in the human body, which processes sensory information, regulates blood pressure, breathing and releases hormones. • The asana and pranayama which helps to stimulate the Chakra associated with Alzheimer’s has the primary function to controls central nervous system • Pranayama is the tool that stimulates the brain and increases level of oxygen in the body it helps in improving concentration and memory, which has been diminished in patient of Alzheimer’s disease.

CONCLUSION • Alzheimer’s disease affects around 5 million people usually affects people aged 65 years and over, 10% cases occurring in people younger than this cases • Yoga has also been found repeatedly by multiple studies that it was efficacious for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia as they engage different parts of the brain based on the various components of the practice, which commonly includes Pranayama, Yogic Asana, Chanting, and different forms of concentration.

The deep, intentional breathing which accompanies the poses removes blockages and serves to purify the body, increasing prana flow. • Asanas are to increase or maintain flexibility, muscle strength, and balance and increase body awareness • Yoga help the brain to form new connections through the stimulation of neurons. Yoga has also been found diminish stress, which has been shown to be a strong correlate of Alzheimer’s disease.
