3. Hubbard was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on
November 25, 1903. As a student at
Douglass School, Stowe School, and
Walnut Hills High School.
He was known as the fastest kid in
school.
He earned a four-year scholastic
average of 90 (out of 100) in his high
school years.
He attended the University of Michigan
where he competed in track and field
4. In 1924 he participated in the Olympic games
in Paris.
He won the long jump at the 1924
Olympics, becoming the first black athlete to
win an Olympic gold medal in an individual
event; set the long jump world record in 1925
(25-103/4) and tied the 100-yard dash record
(9.6) in 1926.
He was the first African American to win an
Olympic gold medal in an individual event.
