In the 1930-1950’s comedy went from silent films into films that had now got
dialogue due to the advancement in technology. Verbal humour revolved around
puns and innuendos.
The first director to start using verbal humour was William Fields.
In the 1960’s became drastically important in films. Spoofs and social commentary
were some of the things that were included in comedies.
The Monty Python team developed humour to the next stage as the coordinated it
well. They would include consecutive humour scenes.
It was the 1990’s were comedy film progressed to the next level. Directors started
to bring all aspects of film into one. Directors wanted to have a logical progression
as well as short snippets of comedy throughout the movie.
5. Role of characters in comedies

To achieve the best comedies picking certain characters for the role is very crucial.
Directors have to know why in particular this certain person would fill this role very
well.
Undertaking a person who has featured in many comedy film would be best as he
already has good knowledge of the genre and will attract new audiences due to
the numbers of fans that like the person.
6. Sound in comedies
• Sound in comedies is very important as it creates certain effects on the
audience e.g. if there was a laughing noise in the background as someone
made a funny joke this here can also make the audience who are watching
the film laugh.
