Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Tế bào mỡ trắng - những gã khổng lồ trong cơthể
Các nghiên cứu khoa học về chuyển hóa phát hiện ra rằng tế bào mỡ trắng chứa một hạt mỡ
bên trong với 90 - 99% là a xít béo và glycerol (triglyceride)đẩynhân tế bào lệchsang một
bên.
Cấu tạo tế bào mỡ trắng.
Kích thước của tế bào mỡ trắng rất lớn, dao động từ 25-200micron. Tế bào này rất dễ tăng
về kích thước và số lượng, chúng có thể tăng kích thước lên gấp 20 lần so với ban đầu.
2. Trong cơ thể người có tới 10-30 tỷtế bào mỡ trắng, nếu không kiểm soát tốt, những tế bào
mỡ trắng sẽ như những “quả bóng cao su” hấp thụ đầy mỡ bên trongvà tiếptục phình ra
khiến cơ thể trở nên phì nhiêu. Chính sự tăng kích thước này lý giải tại sao một người có
trọnglượng 50-70kgnhưng khi “phát phì” có thể lên tới hơn 100kg, thậm chí là 200-400kg.
Bởi vậy mỡ trắng chính là thủ phạm gây thừa cân, béo phì. Mỡ trắng cũng là thủ phạm chính
gây ra rối loạn chuyển hóa glucid, protid, lipid, tình trạng đề kháng insuline, tình trạng viêm
nội mạc... và hậu quả là tăng nguy cơ mắc các bệnh lý như: đái tháo đường, tăng huyết áp,
tim mạch, gan nhiễm mỡ, ung thư...
Theo các nhà khoa học, chính những thói quen hàng ngày trong ăn uống như: lạm dụng thức
ăn nhanh giàu năng lượng, ăn quá nhiều chất béo, ngọt... cùng với lối sống ít vận động khiến
năng lượng đưa vào cơ thể cao hơn năng lượng tiêu hao. Nguồn năng lượng dư thừa này
được tích tụ dưới dạng mỡ trắng, đặc biệt tại vùng eo, bụng, đùi và gây nên tình trạng thừa
cân, béo phì cùng hàng loạt nguy cơ các bệnh lý nguy hiểm kèm theo.
“Nhân tố bí ẩn” được... giải mã
Việc áp dụng các tiếnbộ về công nghệ sinhhọc phân tử trong nghiên cứu về tế bào mỡ trắng
đã giúp các nhà khoa học đã phát hiện ra sự hiện diệncủa thụ thể PPARγ là yếu tố quan
trọngtrực tiếptác độngđến việc hình thành và tíchtụ mỡ của tế bào mỡ trắng. Khi thụ thể
PPARγ hoạt động càngmạnh, tế bào mỡ trắng tạo nên nhiều hơn, làm tăng sự tíchtụ mỡ;
ngược lại nếu không có PPARγ thì không tạo thành tế bào mỡ trắng mới. Đồng thời, các nhà
khoa học cũng phát hiện ra một loại proteincó trênbề mặt của các giọt mỡ là Perilipinchính
là tác nhân chính ngăn cản sự ly giải mỡ của men lipase.
Các kết quả nghiên cứu này đã chỉ ra phương pháp mới trongphòng ngừa và kiểm soát tình
trạng thừa cân, béo phì , đó chính là cáchthức tác độngvào quá trìnhsinh trưởng và phát
triểncủa mỡ trắng hay là giảm sự tíchtụ và tăng ly giải mỡ trắng.
Từ kết quả trên, Trung tâm nghiên cứu InterHealthNutraceuticals (Mỹ) đã tìm thấy các hoạt
chất thiênnhiên từ Belaunja và Mangastin có tác dụnggiảm tíchtụ và tăng ly giải mỡ trắng
mà không gây ảnh hưởng đếnsức khoẻ.
“Chặn đứng” mỡ trắng ở cấp độ tiềntế bào
Kết quả nghiên cứu lâm sàng về Belaunjavà Mangastin mới đâyđã được trườngĐại học
California - Davis Mỹ côngbố cho thấy hiệu quả rõ rệt trongviệc giảm cân nặng, giảm số đo
vòng eo, vòng hông và chỉ số BMI sau từ 2 tuần đến 8 tuần sử dụng và không gây ra các tác
dụng phụ như: rối loạn tiêuhóa, mệt mỏi, mất nước, chán ăn hay ức chế thần kinh...
3. Hoạt chất thiên nhiên từ Belaunja và Mangastin có trong LIC làm giảm tích tụ và tăng ly giải mỡ
trắng.
Nghiên cứu đã chỉ ra rằng chính hai hoạt chất sinh học 7-Hydroxy-Frullanolide trong
Belaunja và Alpha-Mangostin trongMangastinsẽ tác độngcùng lúc, gây ức chế và làm giảm
hoạt độngcủa thụ thể PPARγ ngay trongquá trình biệt hóa nguyên bào sợi đầu dòng để ngăn
không cho tế bào mỡ mới hình thành đồng thời ngăn cản sự tích tụ mỡ trắng.
Song song đó, 7-Hydroxy-Frullanolidevà Alpha-Mangostincòntác độnggiúphạn chế biểu
hiện của loại proteinbảo vệ giọt mỡ là Perilipin, nhờ đó menlipase mới có thể tiếp cận giọt
