Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian explorer born in 1451 who dreamed of traveling around the world to see what it looked like. He worked as a businessman to earn enough money to become an explorer, and was eventually sponsored by Spain in 1499 to embark on voyages where he determined that the lands "discovered" by Christopher Columbus were not Asia but a New World, leading to America being named after him. He had a passion for maps and astronomy from a young age.
