Students were given four astronomy-related tasks to assess their prior knowledge without formal instruction. The tasks tested students' ability to identify planets based on size alone, order planets from closest to furthest from the sun, estimate planetary distances from the sun, and identify planets by both size and features. Most students struggled with accurately gauging planetary sizes and distances. The study highlights misconceptions students have before instruction and areas where their understanding can be improved with teaching about relative planetary scales and characteristics.
