Draft Of Vampire Weekend
1.
2. The album is apparently a somewhat concept album about the decay of the bougsie, its often ironic and satirical.
3. Lyrics are the albums strong points sporting such lines as, “If an interest in culture should be lining the walls, When your birth right is interest you could just accrue it all” Although other lyrics at times can be completely nonsensical.
4. Their songs are energetic. Sometimes I think that the collective unit of the band has ADHD, they cannot stay on one sounds or one beat for very long.
5. They definitely want to occupy the niche of “indie rock” which is obvious from the sound of their singer, Erza Koenig, however its hard to group them in because they simply sound different.
6. Where songs like “Cousin” are fast paced and random, songs like “Run” which are a little slower and less distinct are what I personally find to be the best on the album.
7. Although Run is still distinctive containing Latin sounding trumpets in the background.
8. They have the distinct advantage of being one of a kind, which adds some appeal to the band. Its obvious that they are trying to be different, sometimes with success and sometimes not.
9. For how much I like “Run,” (which I actually find to be an amazing song) I find “Giving up the Gun” to be one of the worst “indie” songs that I have ever heard. The song starts off like someone is having a seizure on a keyboard with a riff that starts and stops and gives me headaches. The vocals on this song are completely generic with a beat under the song that seems straight up ripped out of Eye of the Tiger.
10. “California English” is a best of an acquired taste. It has its moments of genuine joy, filled with perhaps the most intense social commentary on the album. However it is also filled with vocals that are intentionally annoying, in a misguided attempt to sound different. This is a song I want to like, but I have trouble getting through.
11. Although it has my favorite line off the whole album, “Living like the French Connection, but we'll die in LA”
12. For its very good moments, it has some equally bad moments that made me feel sick. They definitely get an A+ for creativity but probably a C+ for the execution.
