1. It only makes sense,
when you think about it,

2. that we’ve evolved from some previous form,

3. its own function
defined and confined
by its capacities,

4. its contexts,

5. its world.

6. It only makes sense,
when you think about it,

7. that being stuck where it was
wasn’t enough,

8. its wings spreading,

9. feet strengthening,

10. back
shifting to
upright.

11. It only makes sense,
when you think about it,

12. that we aren’t finished either

13. but only halfway through becoming
what it is we might become.

14. But it is hard
to think
about it
in the midst
of life,

15. boggled
as we are
by its
complexities.

16. May we find the space,
the permission,
the time,

17. to open our minds
to an evolutionary extrapolation

18. and,
when we’re ready,
imagine ourselves in flight.

19. This we pray
as those confined
but not defined
by our
physical realities…
