Editor's Notes

  1. 1. The recent 2011 Census reported that … 2. There are currently 476,300 ….. 3. Although Australia is now a culturally-diverse country, there is lack of understanding of the way of life of different cultural groups living in Australia 4. In the case of Muslims, little is known of their perceptions about their home environments based on their privacy traditions. 5. And their needs with respect to their home environments has implications for architecture and interior design across Australia, especially when architects and designers are designing houses for them. 6. The current extroverted designs or ‘verandah living’ in Australia may conflict with Muslim’s privacy requirements.
  2. 1. The Research Question to be addressed in this study is: a) How do Australian Muslims perceive privacy in their homes, and how do they achieve privacy? 2. In addition to this question, several other sub-questions will also be addressed: b) To what extent do Australian Muslims perceive modesty to be important within their home environment, and how do they achieve this? c) How do Australian Muslims perceive hospitality within their home environment? d) What are Australian Muslims’ levels of satisfaction with current Australian home designs with regard to privacy?
  3. 1. The qualitative research approach will use 4 main measurement and assessment tools. 2. Each interview will involve semi-structured, in-depth interviews, followed by participant observation and the taking of photographs and sketching of plans/elevations. 3. The semi-structured interviews will be based on open-ended questions and prompts. Interviews will be audio recorded and then transcribed verbatim. 4. Some of the open-ended questions are as shown on the screen. 5. Participant observation is a very useful tool in obtaining description of participants’ behaviours in their homes that were not described during the interviews. 6. Drawings and photographs are useful visual documentation to cross-check the gathered information and evidence at all stages of analysis.
