HelloMy name is Grace ShimThis slidecast is the comparative analysis on presidency of Park Geun-hye
Park Geun-hye is the new president of South KoreaShe is the eleventh presidentThis picture is the cover of Times Magazine which was issued on December seventeen twenty twelveThis magazine raised a controversy because President Park Geun-hye was described as the strongmans daughter. The word strongman is a simile for dictator. Although some people perceived Park Geunhye as a daughter of a dictator, it was unprofessional for it to be expressed publicly
On December nineteen twenty twelve, ParkGeun-hye won the presidential election against Moon Jae in by fifty one point six percent of the voteMoon Jae in was the presidential candidate from Democratic Republic PartyAlthough Moon Jae in lost the election by a few votes, he was favored by the younger generation because they did not like what Park Geunhye’s father did in the pastIt is possible that Park Geunhye may have won the election because of her father Park Chung hee
Park Chung-hee was the third president of South Korea. He brought South Korea back to its feet during an era of economic decline. Because of Park Chung hee’s accomplishment, Samsung stands today as one of the top business in the world. The public also viewed Park Chung hee as a dictator because he imposed the martial law and called himself the President for Life.He punished those who supported communist without a mercy. Not only was Park Geun-hye a daughter of President Park Chung-hee, she was also his first lady after the assassination of her mother. As the first lady of her father, Park Geun-hye got a lot of experience by observing his father side-by-side.
On February twenty-five twenty thirteen, President Park Geun-hye gave her inauguration speech to the public. After she gave the speech, she entered the Blue House as the eleventh president of South Korea.
This comparative analysis is to examine how New York Times and the Korea Herald reported the presidency of Park Geun-hye in national and international politics and the status of women.A total of ten newspaper articles were found in websites of the New York Times and the Korea HeraldUsing the keywords, such as Park Geun-hye; first female Korean president ; female Korean president; female president ; ex-dictator’s daughter; Park Chung-hee, South Korea ; North Korea; and status of womenMy thesis states that….The coverageof the event in the Korea Herald heavily focused on the status of women under the influence of the presidency of Park Geun-hye; however, New York Times heavily focused on the effect on the international politics from the presidency of Park Geun-hye
The New York Times and the Korea Herald covered the last day of the presidential election, December nineteen, twenty twelve. The New York Times and the Korea Herald reported same main pointThere was no visual aid in both newspaper articles
The New York Times solely focuses on Park Geun-hye and her opponent, Moon Jae-in.The Korea Herald focuses on her relationship with former president Park Chung-hee, her father. The New York Times published two newspaper articles. The Korea Herald published only one.Unlike Korea Herald, the New York Times did not include visual aid but they supported their story with voting result from National Election Commision.
The New York Times and the Korea Herald both covered national politics influenced by President Park Geun-hye after the election. For this topic, the newspaper articles were opinion-based rather than fact-basedfocusing on the public’s reaction toward national politics under the influence of President Park Geun-hye.There was no visual aid in both newspaper articles.
The New York Times reported on January twenty-nine twenty thirteen, while Korea Herald reported on January thirty twenty thirteen. The New York Times focused on how previous president Lee Myung-bak would respond to new president Park Geun-hye who used to work together in their political party. The Korea Herald focused on how difficult the Cabinet can be formed while the opposition party is not compromising with Park Geun-hye and the ruling party.
The New York Times and the Korea Herald both covered the status of women influenced by President Park Geun-hye after the election.Similar to previous topic, this topic newspaper articles were also opinion-based rather than fact-basedfocusing on the public’s reaction toward the status of women under the influence of President Park Geun-hye
TheNew York Times reported on March fourteen, twenty thirteen, while Korea Herald reported on February twenty two , twenty thirteen. The Korea Herald published two newspaper articles written by same author The Korea Herald had more full coverage on this topic with roughly between one to three thousand words. For visual aid Korea Herald included a photograph of top Korean female leaders who were interviewed for these newspaper articles.
The New York Times and the Korea Herald both covered international politics influenced by President Park Geun-hye on April first, twenty thirteen. The New York Times and the Korea Herald both focused on President Park Geun-hye’s final military decision toward North Korea in the first paragraph as their main point. In each newspaper article, the New York Times and the Korea Herald described that South Korea would respond to any future attack from North Korea strong and fast.
As North Korea threatened South Korea and their ally United States with a nuclear missile. The Korea Herald is extremely concerned about this situation, however they fail to do a full coverage with approximately one thousand five hundred words like the New York Times.Yet, the Korea Herald included a photograph of Park Geun-hye discussing matters with the military chairs
In conclusion…All ten newspaper articles from the New York Times and the Korea Herald were found on their websiteThey were found using the same keywords The New York Times is American newspaper, but the Korea Herald is Korean English-language newspaper. For English as Second Language students, the Korea Herald newspaper articles were easier to understand.Since many Korean students read newspaper articles from Korea Herald to learn English, the Korea Herald applies simple vocabulary while maintaining the main focus of the story.Although all newspaper articles were written by Korean political reporters, the New York Times was written by Choe Sang-hoon, a Pulitzer prize winning political reporter. In other word, the New York Times newspaper articles written by Choe Sang-hoon are more trustworthy than the Korea HeraldThe Korea Herald includes more visual aid, such as photograph, than the New York Times making it more appealing to read.
The New York Times and the Korea Herald both focus on the politics; However, the Korea Herald focuses more on the status of women under the female president Park Geun-hye.Park Geun-hye is a female, however, her gender is less likely to play a huge role in the politicsBecause the relationship between South Korea and North Korea has been fragileThe South Korea’s first female president Park Geunhye is being watched by not only Koreans, but by the world. Will she be a great president as her father or like the previous presidents?Thank you for listening to my slidecast!
