examples of a private villa from the Ottoman period. In the 1920s it
w a s e n l a r g e d i n o r d e r t o b e c o m e t h e o f f i c i a l r e s i d e n c e o f C o u n t Vo l p i
o f M i s r a t a , w h o a d d e d a n u m b e r o f f e a t u r e s t y p i c a l o f Ve n e t i a n v i l l a s ;
only more recently was it turned into a museum.

restoration, structural expansion of the building and its reuse as the
I s l a m i c M u s e u m o f Tr i p o l i , p r o c e e d e d a l o n g t w o d i f f e r e n t d i r e c t i o n s :
on one hand, the recognition and preser vation of the immense value
of the building itself, a remar kable example of a blend of architectural
s t y l e s , s t a r t i n g w i t h t h e o r i g i n a l O t t o m a n c o r e ; o n t h e o t h e r, t h e
creation of a new arrangement for the museum collection that would
revolutionize visitor enjoyment and equip the facility with state-of-
the-ar t ser vices aimed at a national and international clientele.
Hence the decision to create new spaces to house the ticket office

and the cafeteria near the historic main building, which would be
entirely devoted to the museum itself.
F o r t h e l a t t e r, a r c h i t e c t u r a l i n t e r v e n t i o n w a s d e s i g n e d t o b e d e l i c a t e ,
minimalist and almost invisible.
The aim was to emphasize the historical decorative and architectural
features of the complex, treat the public to the sensorial experience

of finding themselves inside an Ottoman villa and transform the
museum itself into a wor k of ar t.
The collection was organized thematically and the exhibits were
enhanced with technologies allowing maximum interaction with the
visitors.

Carr ying out the conser vative restoration required the assistance of
numerous Italian craftsmen who wor ked onsite.
At the same time, several Libyan architects were invited to Italy to
l e a r n s p e c i f i c t e c h n i q u e s i n v o l v e d i n t h e p r o j e c t . L a s t l y, t h e f a c i l i t y
was equipped with state-of-the-ar t plumbing, electrical and heating
systems, all perfectly integrated with the original str ucture.
The landscape design project for the large grounds surrounding the
m u s e u m w i l l c o m p l e t e Tr i p o l i ’ s n e w m u s e u m a n d c u l t u r a l c e n t r e .
