Pre conceptional care
1.
2.
3. Dharma - in general refers
to conduct and to guide action
- essential for the protection
and perpetuation of the
individual and society.
4. To attain the Dharma & other
PURUSHARTHAS efficient body and
mind are required which work as
instruments in the hands of inner
consciousness.
Bodies evolve as a routine part of
human reproductive physiology and
also as a part of cosmic creative
scheme.
5. PRE CONCEPTIONAL CARE
Pre conceptional care can be
defined as the care or advice given to
a couple planning a pregnancy well
before the time of actual conception.
Modern obstetrics forwarded the
pre-conceptional concept as an
extension of antenatal care to provide
optimal health to mother and baby.
6. Presently when the pregnant woman
approaches obstetrician for antenatal care, it
is too late in terms of pre-conceptional care,
as organo-genisis would have been
completed by that time.
7. And hence - Obstetrician feels
herself incapacitated to take steps
to prevent any congenital and
genetic problems.
8. OBJECTIVES
Identification of certain high risk factors
Medical – cardiac diseases etc
Obstetric – previous molar pregnancy
Hereditary – muscular dystrophy, colour
blindness
Personal – elderly primi-gravida
Stabilization of pre-existing chronic
diseases like – HTN, diabetes, epilepsy,
overweight etc.
9. Treatment and immunization to certain
disorders like rubella etc.
To discontinue potential teratogenic
medication
To record or to improve base level health
status of would be mother.
To prevent repetition of reproductive
diseases
10. Pre-conceptional care
includes
Medical screening,
Genetic counselling,
Basal health check up of would be
mother and is essential for couples that
are determined as being at risk
11. Child psychology refers two kinds of birth----
one social and the other biological. The
social birth is the beginning of life in the
society. But actually speaking, life begins
270 to 280 days earlier than the moment the
baby is born. This so called first life also
originates from the fusion of two life cells.
What were separated as two halves have
been unified in this fusion only with the
potency of further differentiation and
unification.
Fundamentals of modern psychology …J.C.Banerjee
12. PRE CONCEPTIONAL CARE IS NOT A NEW
CONCEPT
Charaka Samhita (1000 B C), a known first book
on medicine has spared one chapter ‘ JATI
SUTREEYA’ which explains about the up-liftment
of human race by getting ‘SHREYASI PRAJA’ a
baby meant for social and self (spiritual) welfare.
Sushruta 1000 BC, Kashyapa 600 BC and both
the Vagbhata-s have univocally extended same
views with slight differences in the procedures.
13.
14.
15. Utility of planned pregnancy
AYURVEDA not only deals with life but also
thinks about ULTIMATE GOAL OF LIFE …..
attainment of salvation.
To synchronise the subtle influences of
nature in favour of creative physiology
AYURVEDA fixed some rules and regulations
of health and proposed some theories in the
Shareera Sthanas of all the Samhitas to
produce a resourceful body with all its
psychological, intellectual and emotional
entities.
16. Training of future citizen in uterine world and
much before that, to get high ranked
personalities.
To combat the social problems like corruption,
criminal tendency, and addictions which are the
indications of HEENA SATWA.
To combat personal health problems like
allergies, neurological problems, psychological
problems, easy susceptibility to addictions &
infections by increasing psychological and
physical immunity.
17. Aims & Objectives
Social: -
To elevate the physical, psychological,
emotional and spiritual status of foetus.
To promote the multifaceted health status
of next generation.
Academic: -
To enlighten the age-old concept
described in Ayurvedic classics where it is
thought to be as a new concept.
18. Institutional: -
Practical implementation of concept
makes institutions specified for the new
work.
As apart of P. G teaching programme.
Personal (patient): -
Trial to treat B O H cases with
chromosomal and genetic problems .
Trial to eradicate the hereditary diseases.
Trial to issue a baby of choice to mother in
a natural way .
19. PRE CONCEPTIONAL CARE comprises of
SNEHANA (Oleation)
SAMSHODHANA – by
– Vamana (Emesis),
– Virechana (Purgation) and
– Vasti (Evacuative & nutritive Enema)
AHARA – Diet restriction
VIHARA – Abstinence
– Religious rituals (The will power to
have a qualitative issue)
TO ENSURE
Beeja shuddhi (to improve the quality of sperm &
ovum),
Kshetra shuddhi (to raise the status of
endometrial bed),
Mano shuddhi (to develop the pure conscious
ness)
25. – Spermatogenesis is the complete development of spermatids
from primordial male germ cells And takes place in about 61-
64 days.
– Capacitation of the sperm signifies the physio-chemical
changes making the sperm capable of fertilising the ovum
which occurs in the fluid media of the female genital tract which
takes about in 2-6 hrs
Ovulation approximately occurs after 16-24 hrs. Of the L.H
surge L.H. Peak persists about 24 hrs.
Ovulation occurs about 38 hours after the onset of the L. H.
surge.
Recruitment to antrum formation--- 40 days
0.2mm antral follicle to a mature pre-ovulatory follicle 60
days
Pre-ovulatory Period ------ 14 days
Over-all 114 days
31. Dominance of rajas and tamas and the actions in the past
life are responsible for the variations in the form of Bhutas to
the sperm and ovum.
32. SUKRA and RAJAS

Nourishment to gametes
is derived through these
four MAHABHUTAS from
ANNA RASA (digested
food materials)

Nourishment to Beeja
Nature of Gametes
33. Psychology is more interested in the
product of fertilisation than the process.
We are thus here concerned with the
contributions made by the parent cells in
the new product. What has the sperm
brought in itself for the ovum? And what is
the complementary content of the ovum
given as presentation in this union?

34. Genes
Genes are the structural units of inheritance stored
in chromosomes, and are responsible for
transmission of characters from parents to
offsprings. Tremendous volume of information is
stored in the chromosomes of each cells.
Inheritance
It is a term used to note transmission of characters
from parents to Off spring.
35. Germinal mutations occurs in reproductive
cells and perpetuated in the subsequent
generations
– Dominant mutations seen in next generations
– Recessive mutations escape several generations
Mutagens are X-rays, ultra violet rays, other
radiations like alpha rays, beta rays, cosmic
rays, temperature, chemicals like mustard gas,
phenol, caffeine, formaldehyde and nitrous acid.
Significance
Advantageous mutations can bring out evolution
of species.
36. Concept of genetic disorders
Single gene disorders – Mutation in either one or in
a pair of homologous alleles at a single locus. E.g.
Spinal muscular dystrophy, Hemophilia A & B
Chromosomal disorders which are extremely
common effecting more than half of all conceptions
in which live born frequency is about 0.6 %.
Numerical – e.g. 45X0 (Turners Syndrome)
Multifactorial disorders – These are caused by
unknown number of genes interacting with equally
unknown environmental factors.
37. Treatment of genetic diseases
Even though all of the genetic disorders cannot be
treated, some of the diseases can be treated by
changes in the diet etc.
Elimination in diet as diet free of phenylalanine is
given to patients of phenylketonuria.
Supplementation in diet
– Vitamin C supplementation in conditions involving
genetic defect in vitamin c synthesis.
– Folic acid supplementation in spina bifida.
Replacement therapy
Administration of antihaemophilic globulin in the
patients of haemophilia.
38.
39.
40.
41. Concept of genetic disorders
When fragments of male and female gametes
(Beeja) responsible for creation of genital
tissues in fetus is vitiated leads to sexual
dysfunctions.
If testes are vitiated by Vata aspermia
(Pavanendriyatva) occurs.
Obstruction of the seminal passage by Vata
makes the offspring anaphrodisiac
(Samskaravaha)
Etc.
42.
43.
44. Physical Strength of Foetus
It will be decided by the strength, nature,
and Doshic configuration of gametes i.e.
ovum in female and spermatozoon in male.
The Prakriti of child is determined at the
time of its conception
BY THE STATE OF the Doshas in the
Shukra and Artava of the parents at the
time of the act of fecundation.
45. KSHETRA
"All primitive religions from the earliest Neolithic
period, were based on goddesses. There was
no concept of god because the goddess
symbolized the feminine principle of fecundity
Prof Kunal Chakrabarti,Jawaharlal
Nehru University, New Delhi.
Endometrium with its decidual reaction can be
taken as Sukshetra
46. Un-vitiated shukra passing through healthy yoni
reaches healthy garbhasaya and gets mixed with
disease free shonitha resulting in pregnancy, in
the same way as a white cloth takes up any dye.
(C.s sha –8/17, A.S.sha---1/68)
The interior of uterus (garbhashaya koshta) will be
filled by minute capillaries for whole month to
receive the fertilized ovum (beeja)
47. The increased structural and secretory activity of
the endometrium in response to progesterone is
called as decidual reaction. Endometrium with
clear vesicular cytoplasm containing abundant
fluids rich in glycogen & fat, dilated capillaries,
uterine glands, decidual cells and blood vessels
actively participate in physiology of conception.
Endometrium with all its decidual changes
provides good nidus for implantation of
blastocyst; supplies nutrition to the early stages
of growing ovum by its rich sources of glycogen
and fat as more water, more fertilizer, more
pesticides and certain other chemicals
potentiate crop areas for high-yield and spurred
growth.
48. The term Kshetra can not be limited to
endometrium and uterus,
The health status of whole body can alter
the endometrium.
Psycho-emotional status can influence
endometrium and uterus by its hormonal
and nervous factors.
49. According to Manu Smruti, a woman
needs a great deal of protection in order to
remain pure and chaste so that her
children can be fully engaged for the
benefit of human society." (Srila A. C.
Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.
Srimad Bhagavatam. 5:2:21. purport )

52. Satwa of the parents will be maintained by
the regimen followed in ahara for one
month.
(Because 1/6 part of ahara forms the
manas and dictate the mano vrithis, So
satwika prakritha ahara causes sthira

59. Pravara Satwa
People of Pravara Satwa even if
possessed of weak physique, with
distinguished psychological capabilities in
them can tolerate serious exogenous and
endogenous diseases without much
difficulty.
60. The psyche being the connecting link between the
soul and physical body regulates the body activities. In
the degenerating phases it causes abnormal
behaviour, attenuated functions of sense organs and
diminished strength.

qualities like pious ness, dexterity,
intelligence, Memory, quickness for work,
gratitude & positive thoughts etc..

67. Primary Mental Abilities
On analyzing the traits and abilities of individuals, basic
aptitudes or primary mental abilities are discovered.
The Minnesota occupational rating scales of America
indicate six human abilities corresponding to their
function. they are defined by gray as follows
Academic:-The ability to understand and manage ideas
and symbols.
Social :- The ability to understand and manage people.
Musical :–The ability to discriminate musical sounds and
to give some form of expression through them.
Artistic:-The ability to create artistic forms of merit and to
evaluate forms already created…………………

99. Satwic food promotes clarity and calmness of mind and
is favorable for spiritual growth. It is "sweet, fresh and
agreeable" and includes most fruits, nuts, seeds,
vegetable, whole grain, honey, pure water and milk Food
should be freshly prepared and eaten with attention and
gratitude.
Rajasic food feeds the body, but promotes activity and
therefore induces restlessness of mind. It disturbs the
equilibrium of the mind and is generally to be avoided.
Rajasic foods include most spicy foods; stimulants like
coffee, tea, eggs, garlic, onion and chocolate, as well as
most processed food.
Tamasic food (to be avoided) induces heaviness of the
body and dullness of the mind, and benefits neither.
It includes meat, fish, alcohol, as well as food that are
stale or overripe. Overeating is also Tamasic.
100. Shali rice is madhura and kashaya in taste, laghu in
nature, increases bala, ruchi, swara Satwic in nature.
Being sheeta in nature it controls pitha and acts as
diuretic, anabolic and aphrodisiac.
Rice is not only a staple food around the world but is
a cultural symbol for fertility, health and wealth in
many countries.
These are the foods that are rich in 'chetna,' the
healing and nurturing influence of nature. They are so
alive with nature's intelligence that fatigue-causing
toxins cannot be accumulated when it is used
101. Milk is almost a complete food which contains
proteins, carbohydrates and fats, vitamins and
minerals. The protein of milk is of very high
biological value.
Glucose is the principal source of energy.
Sugar: - The carbohydrate in all milks is lactate it is
less sweater then cane sugar and can be easily
fermented
Minerals: - Milk contains almost all known minerals
needed by body such as calcium phosphorus,
sodium, potassium, magnesium, cobalt, copper,
iodine etc. and particularly rich in calcium
Calcium is needed for strong bones, muscle
contraction and nerve function.
102. Proteins: - The chief protein of the milk is casein and
available in milk as calcium cascinogenate. The other
proteins are lactalbumine and lactiglobuline. Milk protein
contains all the essential amino acids.
Fat: - Fat content of milk varies from 3.4% to 8.5 %(
buffalo milk). Milk fat is a good source of retinol and
vitamin D.
Vitamins it is a good source of all vitamins except
Vitamin C.
Vitamin D aids in absorption of calcium.
Vitamin A aids in glyco-protein synthesis &promotes
cell growth and differentiation.
Vitamin B 12 formation of rbc,maintaining nervous
system. for normal cell division and protein synthesis.
103. Ghee is clarified butter with its milk solids and water
removed
Body energy is stored and increases body weight
of fetus & deposition of fat.
Ghrita contains more of LDL, which passes through
the placental barrier
Necessary for the synthesis of surfactants and the
development of lungs.
Ghee helps in absorption of fat soluble vitamins like
Vit A,D,E,K which are essential for the proper development of
fetus.
It stimulates the digestion (Agni) better than any other oil.
Increases immunity from disease or Ojas
It has a high smoking point and is excellent for frying
unlike vegetable oils
104. It increases the medicinal properties of spices
when spices are sautéed in it
it is more alkaline than other oils and this results
into a smoother in tone and makes one look
younger
One needs less ghee (half or two-thirds) as
compared to oil to achieve the same goals.
Ghee balances both Vata (the Ayurvedic
mind/body operator that controls movement in
mind and body) and Pitta (the operator that
controls heat and metabolism).

are extracted from sarshapa,tila,priyala, vibhitaka,
abhaya,eranda,madhuka etc…oil yielding
sources.(snehashaya).
It is the best for vata alleviation, aggravates pitha
and not aggravates kapha.
It improves strength, intelligence, appetite, cares
skin.
Taila being constituted with sneha, ushna, guru
gunas mitigates vata.
It is indicated in vata vyadhis, yonidoshas
,rajodoshas.
108. Masha being constituted with
madhura rasa, snigdha, ushna,
guru gunas mitigates vata,
Aggravates pitha and sleshma
Increases bulk of stools and
masculine vigour.
Increases the strength.
111. The couple is if happy during inter-course the
born child would be satwika,if frustated then
rajasika and if sorrowful then tamasika
Husband and Relatives should surround woman
with gentle behaviour.
The coitus should be done in high spirits
and in co-operative aptitude.
She should be entertained with favourite and
pleasing stories.
Satwika Prakritha ahara causes sthira Chitha to
parents and thus to child.
This kalyana, sukha kamana and sumanasata of
parents may be inherited to the child thus designing
the psychological nature of Garbha
112. Sexual dysfunctions include sexual
desire disorders, sexual arousal
disorders, orgasmic disorders, sexual
pain disorders.
Desire phase disorders include
deficiency or complete absence of
sexual fantasies with marked distress
and interpersonal difficulty.
The so called causes of desire phase
disorders are psychological problems
like feeling unloved, feelings of
depression, anger with partner
performance anxiety, low self esteem,
guilt about sex and pleasure etc.
113. The treatment includes individual
therapy and relation ship counseling.
The couple is instructed to perform '
exercises' which are structured
sensual exercises.
These exercises provide the couple
with a non-demanding, non-
threatening and reassuring
environment where they can address
performance anxiety, sexual
communication issues and lack of
sexual experience and knowledge.

118. The soul ,who is like a seed transmigrates
from one body to other body associated with the
four Maha Bhutas . Depending upon the past
actions virtuous and sinful the soul enters into
suitable bodies.
The psychological characteristics depend
upon the dominance of qualities like Satwa,
Raja, Tamas in Mana; Besides, the Manas is
also influenced by its previous abode, such as
left over previous bodies of like divine origin or
of lower species.
119.
120. The self
Consciousness of whatever vague form it
may be is assumed by psychology as existing
at the very dawn of the new born infant's life. If
the foetus in its pre-natal existence endowed
with some form of sensation evidently the
foetus also must have consciousness.
The newborn is described in psychology as
mainly "a creature of reflexes" but in the midst
of these reflexes modern psychologists find the
"the presence of a dull, undefined
foreshadowing of consciousness in which the
sensorial and emotional elements are
intermingled as stern said.
121. The same confusion is also the adult’s universe ,but
this universe is, as James puts it ‘resolvable' or at least
to be resolved. The human intellect as socialized does
this job of resolution. This is the analysis –synthesis
business with which human mind or self is engaged.
or, in other words, this is what is called self
consciousness. Thinking, feeling and willing or
whatever ‘ing’ we may add to the mental functions,
can not occur apart from some one who thinks ,feels,
and wills. some one has these experiences.

125. It is true that the core of the unconscious is the
libidinal urge, a sex impulse as Freud thinks, in
as much as Kama, the sex motivation is
essential for the fruition of self’s desire for
multiplication or manifestation-an urge for
creation. This is an abiding biological law
operating in nature (Prakriti). Moreover the
manifest contents of sexual experiences give
such an intensive impression on the neurons
of the nervous system, that it not only
produces a temporary pleasant effect upon the
psychic tensions but also shakes the hedonic
structure of sensual elements of the dynamic
mind stuff leaving a sustained impression on it
in a latent form. yoga psychology

mantras. The inhalation should be given with
‘Apodevirupasrtija' Mantras.
Repeating the name of Vamadevi in low tone, keeping
the wife on his right side the husband should perform
coitus for achievement of conception.
130. The will power to have a qualitative
issue and the rituals observed just
before the intercourse, prepares the
mind not to be illusioned in sexual
pleasure, but to be concentrated to
invoke a high spirited soul to enter in
the womb of particular woman.
This Sthira Chithatha of parents may be
inherited to the child thus designing the
psychological nature of Garbha.
131. What others say
To check the increase of demoniac
population, the Vedic civilization enacted so
many rules and regulations of social life, the
most important of which is the Garbhädhäna
process for begetting good children. In
Bhagavad-gitä Arjuna informed Krishna that if
there is unwanted population (Varna-Sankara),
the entire world will appear to be hell. People are
very anxious for peace in the world, but there are
so many unwanted children born without the
benefit of the Garbhädhäna ceremony, just like
the demons born from Diti.
132. Diti was so lusty that she forced her
husband to copulate at a time which was
inauspicious, and therefore the demons were
born to create disturbances. In having sex
life to beget children, one should observe the
process for begetting nice children; if each
and every householder in every family
observes the Vedic system, then there are
nice children, not demons, and automatically
there is peace in the world. If we do not
follow regulations in life for social tranquility,
we cannot expect peace. Rather, we will have
to undergo the stringent reactions of natural
laws." (Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
Prabhupada. Srimad Bhagavatam. 3:17:15.
purport.)
133. Chanting of mantra utilised the ordinary
mechanics of the thinking process and in
more subtle versions de-excites the
nervous system leading to pure
consciousness.
The development of purity of
consciousness by monitoring neuro-
endocrine system leads to a systematic,
purposeful and precise development of
intuition in its most highly cultivated and
focussed form.

134. Procreation capacity is the one of the most
powerful life energy controlled by first charka
(mooladhara) – a clear understanding is essential.
(Swamy Shivananda radha)
From a yogic point of view self mastery… control
of basic instinct is needed to become a fully
develop human being. A truly spiritual marriage
between two people who are highly developed and
close to the same level, sexual desire is neither a
demand nor duty but communication with a true
understanding of love. In spite of efforts to avoid
the consequences of the sexual involvement
babies are born unwanted products of some
pleasure with little dignity and self worth and can
be a material asset to their parents.
135. Gaining knowledge about cosmos as precise,
rigorous and fundamental as is quantum field
theory but instead of mathematical equations,
its formulations of laws nature is expressed in
terms of sequences of sound (Mantras of Rig-
Veda) which act on a properly sensitised
nervous system at a subtle level to generate
definite items of knowledge.
(Maharshi Mahesh yogi's lecture ' Name and form')
136. The subjects after under going meditation
improved significantly on fluency (the number of
ideas generated) and originality. (The
imagination of statistically infrequent ideas)
When this Sanyama is maintained in the up
most exhilarating moments of life causes dosha
Samyatha, (Vata, Pitta, Kapha Samyatha), Guna
Samyatha (Satwa, Rajas, Tamas) leading to
ideal psycho-somatic lay out of future embryo.
137. Vedic tradition states that once Sanyama is
mastered, the ability to accomplish anything is
ingrained in the physiology.
Conscious ness is the field of all possibilities.
It is the practice of transcending that prepares
the fertile ground for Sanyama.
Sanyama is a process involving three aspects
of consciousness
Dharana or the ability effortlessly to hold a
thought in the focus of attention
Dhyana or the capacity of thought to reform
itself to its subtlest state or creating motion
Samadhi or unbounded awareness leading to
the state of least excitation
Scientific research on the transcendental

138. In the regime of consciousness the influence of
the patanjali sutra on the wholeness of pure
conscious ness is such as to cause a
spontaneous localization of the pure
consciousness in the direction of the particular
result specified by Patanjali, that is a symmetry
breaking of the consciousness takes place
where by the wholeness of consciousness flows
in to a particular localization. Thus the process
of creativity is self generating-

Charaka advises intake of milk repeatedly in quantity
desirous by the woman and should have normal food only
twice a day. Here we can see that,
Milk-sheeta,snigdha,madhura =increase kapha =-
promotes development of embryo.
Milk rich in proteins-increase blood supply aids the growth
& development of placenta.
Growth of breast & uterus.
151. Another important component – Calcium.
Calcium regulating hormones are altered such that
there is increased calcium absorption by the
intestine. The pregnant women retains about
30gm of calcium, most of which is deposited in the
foetus in the third trimester, (50-350mg of ionized
cal/day) transferred to foetus.
In non-pregnant women of 18-25yrs high
requirement of calcium is seen.
152. Sushruta has advised intake of sweet, cold & liquid
diet from first to third month
Here, cold and liquid diet might have been
advised from the view of morning sickness
suffered during the first trimester- dehydration,
- cold substance decreased irritation of
gastric mucosa
- sweet high carbohydrate, low fat, high
protein intake in small quantities is said to be
helpful during this time.
Fluid intake not only conteracts dehydration
but also provides relief form nausea.
153. The upachita rasadhatu, circulating in the body of
the pregnant simultaneously performs three of the
functions, chief function being the shareera pushti
of the mother and transferred to the garbha
through the nabhi nadi. After being digested by
the kayagni of the garbha, this rasadhatu induces
bala and varna in it..
There results a steep phase specifically in 6th
month of pregnancy, during which the garbha
poshana gains velocity. Classics have detailed the
explanation of the changes occurring in the garbha
which are expressed by the woman to the external
world by few exclusive signs and symptoms. Even
the textbooks of Embryology are referring similar
explanations for the fetal growth at this period of
pregnancy.
154. Gokshura, a widely available drug throughout
India, is well known for the nourishing efficacy
it has on the bodily tissues.
The drug possesses madhura rasa as well as
madhura vipaka. Madhura rasa is considered as
balya, anulomaka and vata-pitta hara. Since the
drug has guru and snigdha gunas, it nourishes
kapha, which is of prime importance for the
garbha poshana and dhatu vardhana.
The roots of gokshura consist of phytosterols
such as campesterol, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol
and neotigogenin. These have;
– effect.
155. Fruits chiefly consist of various saponins such as chlorogenin, diosgenin, rutine
and rhamnose. These are well popular for their-
Anti-oxidant effect.
Cholesterol lowering ability.
Acting as immune boosters.
Thus, as a whole, the herb Gokshura can be considered as the ideal drug,
advised by our ancients in the 6th month of pregnancy, as it fulfills the timely
needs successfully.
Go ghrita, is the chief snehadravya, popularly used in various Ayurvedic
preparations.
Acharya Charaka says it as having madhura rasa and madhura vipaka thus
acts as anabolic in nature. He also quotes it as sahasra veerya and thereby
it does sahasra karmas. He mentions its function as – improves rasa dhatu,
enhances bala and varna, increases kapha and meda. Even it improves
intellect and the memory.
Maharshi Sushruta and Vagbhatacharya- gave similar details about the
drug and consider it as the best sneha dravya. Yogaratnakara specifies one more
function of it as – shramanaashaka.
156. Analysis of the drug has shown that the cow’s ghee contains
15th amount of lactose, a monosugar. Its 25th part is made of
proteins and rest of it is fat. Studies have shown the presence
of all the 4 fat soluble vitamins in cow’s ghee. Sophisticated
research works have proved that the drug possesses
antioxidant property and lipophilic action which together
facilitates the delivery of the potential contents of the drug to
the mitochondria, microsome and the nuclear membrane of the
target tissues
The sukhoshna jala is the anupana, advised by the classics as
to be drunk after the intake of any ghee. Along with making the
drug palatable, it enhances the digestion and assimilation in the
systems of the body. Studies have proved that, after the intake
of the ghee one should drink warm water. Because the ghee
gets solidified when cools and leaves the odor and taste of the
drugs used with it. They are counter acted by the usage of
warm water.

about 3 weeks, neuronal connections are
first made at about 4 weeks and are
geographically established by 12 weeks.

165. Hearing is probably initiated at
about 25 weeks as progressive
myelination allows better
impulse resolution. The hearing
identified by behavioural
response to sound in utero,
probably only relates to intense,
low frequency sounds.

166. Sense of sound is normally the first sense
acquired at around 18 weeks inside the
womb and that it is commonly the last
sense to leave human being at death.
The first function of the ear of foetus is to
give food to the brain.
60% of the electrical energy of the brain is
obtained through our ears.
(Dr. Alfred Tomatis)
Resonance is thus concerned with the
ability of a vibration to reach out, through
vibrational waves in order to stimulate a
similar vibration in another body. It triggers
a response in a vibratory medium that is
composed of a similar frequency.
167.
168. Sound exploits the unique psycho –
acoustical properties and the abilities to
resonate with certain healing energies. It
relaxes the body and lowers the blood
pressure and provides a form of cerebral
stimulation. This produces a sense of well
being and increased energy.
The changing effect of sound, especially
high frequency sound increases the
electrical potential of brain through their
action on the Corti cells of the inner ear
(Dr. Alfred tomatis)
169. Fetal movements also increase in response
to a sudden sound with a specific tone and
decreases after several repetitions; a
different tone elicits the original response.
This ability to habituate to repeated stimuli, a
form of learning, is diminished in
neurologically impaired or physically
stressed foetuses. Similar responses to
visual and tactile stimuli have been
observed.

172. In a study of expectant mothers those who
listen to music during child birth did not
required anaesthics. Listening to music
releases endorphins and this decreases the
need for medication. It also provides a
distraction from pain and release anxiety.
In an other study of pregnant mothers baby’s
were found to prefer Mozart and Vivaldi to
other composers in early, as well as the later
stages of pragnaancy. When mothers
listened to rock music foetuses would kick
violantly and have increased heart race.

174. Yoga
Yoga is one of the most perfect of Indian sciences
based mainly on the principles of physiology,
psychology and physics. It is a holistic treatment,
which covers all aspects of health, physical as well
as mental. The regular practice of yoga not only
makes the body strong and flexible, but it has also
been scientifically proved that yoga improves the
functioning of the respiratory, circulatory, digestive
and endocrine systems. Yoga, with its unique
qualities has paved the way for the present day
world-wide appeal. Unlike the other forms of
exercises, yoga is less strenuous and it can be
done by anyone
175. Yogic postures (asanas) chosen for the
study
During pregnancy, due to the postural changes and
numerous changes in the body, choosing the right type
of asana helpful in pregnancy is important. This made
us opt for specific postures for practice during
pregnancy. Few factors were considered before
selecting any posture. There should be no rise in Intra-
abdominal pressure. There should not be any direct
pressure on the abdomen, so asanas where lying down
in dorsal aspect (i.e. face and abdomen downwards on
the floor) was required were excluded e.g.
Shalabhasana, Bhujangasana, Dhanurasana, etc.
Asanas which were easy to do were chosen, so difficult
asanas were excluded. E.g. Kukkutasana, Mayurasana,
etc. were not included. Standing or sitting postures,
where there is forward bending, were avoided, as they
may raise the intra-abdominal pressure and also loss of
balance e.g. Paschimottanasana, Pavanamuktasana,
Padahastasana, etc. were excluded.
181. Pranayama
Prana means energy; it refers to Prana Vayu, a type of
Vayu.
Ayama is to stretch or extend.
Definitions of Pranayama:
Patanjali (P.Y.S.2/49)74 says Pranayama is the pause in
the moment of inhalation and exhalation when that is
secured. Controlling the breath by understanding and
conquering the process of Prana and making it work
according to one’s own will is called Pranayama.
Vachaspati defines Pranayama as break in the moment
of both inhalation and exhalation in Rechaka, Puraka,
and Kumbhaka. This break is the moment of inhalation
and exhalation is to be taken as a definition of
Pranayama
182. In Yogoshikhopanishada, the author describes
that Prana Vayu is important to accept nutritional
constituents from the outside environment and
Apana Vayu is responsible for Expulsion of waste
products from the body. The proper function and
balance of both these is responsible for
maintaining the health of Body and Mind. The
balance between these two Vayus can be done by
practice of Yoga131.
By Pranayama, there is regulation and
coordinated action of all these Vayus, which is
very essential during Pregnancy.
183. Yoga and Pranayama
Slowdynamic movements are done while doing
Yoga and Pranayama. There is Low risk of injuring
muscles and ligaments while doing YogaThere is
Normalization of muscle tone.Balanced activity of
opposing group of muscles.Samadhi is the
ultimate goal for practitioner of yoga, so is
process-oriented.Yoga Concentrates on all
aspects of physical strength and stamina, breath
regulation, calmness of mind, etc. Low caloric
consumption, so pregnant woman doesn’t have to
consume any extra diet.Yoga is energizing and
gives a sense of well being.
184. Psychological aspects of Yoga and Pranayama
help to maintain mental health (reduction in
anxiety and sleep disturbances)With proper
instructions by a trained person, Yoga can be
practiced at home and doesn’t need any
equipments, gadgets or skill.
Hydration has to be maintained like in normal
person.Yoga therapy has stood the test of time
since ages and evolved over centuries
.According to Hat.Y.P., Yoga can be done by
anyone, even a small child, old people, or people
who are weak177, considering which, we can say
that yoga can be done during pregnancy. It is
proved that there is increase in birth weight to a
health level if Yoga is done during pregnancy.
185. Drugs required for induction or augmentation was
less than that needed in the control group.
Incidence of mode of assistance during labour and
complications during child birth were also fewer in
trail group. Mean birth weight of the babies in the
trial group was also significantly greater than that
of the control group with a mean of 326.66
gms.(p≤0.001). There were no adverse effects
noted in the trail group.
186. The increased pain and anxiety can cause
the release of catecholamines, stimulating
the β-receptors, which may prolong labour.
Decreased catecholamines and increased
pain threshold in patients doing Yoga may
be the reason of reduction of 1st stage of
labour.
187.
188. BENEFITS
the vibrations created by pranayama
influence different parts of the brain (the
reticular formation ) which eliminates anxiety
and promotes a calm state of mind. In the
same way hypothalamus and pituitary are
stimulated. They are responsible for the
control of the autonomous nervous system
and hormone system.
189. FEW RESEARCH WORKS
The lung volume at which airways in the
dependent parts of the lungs begin to close during
expiration, has been considered to be higher in
pregnancy by some investigators.
In 1978 Milne & colleagues.
In 1989 Clapp.
Increased oxygen consumption with minimum
exertion due to pranayama.
Belief of Dr. William Harvey.
190. CONCLUSION
.
Thus the pranayama assists the mother in
developing a positive influence on the growing
consciousness of the child, as well as ensuring
that the experiences of pregnancy and birth
are wholesome and memorable ones for both
herself and the child.
