Gloria's Media evaluation
1.
2. Forms and conventions of professional teen dramas
The genre of our chosen film is teen drama. This film genre
targets the younger generation and the plot is usually concerned
with their interests such as
relationships, rebellion, pregnancy, abuse and
sexuality.
Teen dramas often strike a balance between
sensitive issues that the audience can relate
to whilst still giving a humorous and
entertaining feel.
3. This shot is taken from the film save the last
dance. A wide camera shot is used in the opening
sequence which at first shows young students
Teen drama films are often set in colleges or
arriving at college.
institutions of higher education.
4. A medium close up is used which shows two
characters in high school , one of the two appears
more optimistic than the other, this reflects the
reality and life issues faced by teenagers in high
school.
A close up is followed on one of the characters.
From this shot the audience can tell that the young
girl is a key character and her facial expressions
imply that she is troubled and lost in thought.
5. Forms and conventions used in my film
When i researched the forms and conventions of teen dramas I found that
they relate to real life issues faced by young people. Save the last dance,
kidulthood and Precious are examples of teen dramas.
Me and my group decided to use the conventions found in teen dramas for our
opening sequence in our film as we realised that this would be the best way to
communicate the meaning of our film. Our film was based upon the circumstances
and issues that teenagers face.
My group went on to develop the way teen dramas are presented . Teen dramas
often manage to add a humours and light hearted approach about the issues faced
by there characters, whereas our film takes a serious approach and highlights the
true circumstances that young women who are abused face.
6. My Media product Kidult-hood
These shots display how
we used the conventions
of professional Teen
dramas in our media
product.
These two shots display
young teenagers during
their college.
7. Representation of our characters
Our film is based on a character named Grace who is
being sexually abused by her stepfather. Grace is shown
to be vulnerable and incapable of defending herself.
There are various shots in our film were through her body
language and positioning, she appears weak and inferior.
Grace is represented as a vulnerable young teenager. This
highlights the challenges faced by young women.
The stepfather is seen to be overpowering and
threatening. This is clearly scene in our film were the
location is in Grace’s bedroom, we portrayed the
stepfather in a negative light and this can be seen
through is costumes as he is wearing dark clothing
and in his manner towards Grace. Our film
conformed to the stereotypical representation of
society were there are gender divisions meaning
that males are dominate and women are victims.
8. Film companies that might distribute my film.
Following our research, I decided that our film would be
distributed by film4 . Film4 is an independent British film
company thus making it ideal for our type of film as our film
is based upon teenage life in Britain therefore our target
audience can relate to it.
Film4 is owned by channel 4 which has sister
channels such as E4. These channels are
viewed by young teenagers and are aimed at
the younger generation who are our target
audience, as Film4 productions are commonly
shown on these channels which means our
film would reach our intended audience.
9. Target audience
Our media product is a teen Drama therefore we are targeting young adults and
teenagers . Our media product is likely to appeal more to women as they may relate to
our protagonist and the circumstances she faces.
Following our student questionnaire our research showed us that the majority of
students interests included socialising and watching movies, with males and females
watching at least 3 movies per week. Our research also concluded that the students
were willing to spend £7 or more in movie stores.
This is evidence that our target audience are regular viewers of movies and are willing
to pay for movies that they are interested in, therefore by producing a Teen Drama that
engages with our target audience it will be successful in drawing in them in.
11. Attracting and addressing our audience
Our media product addressed and attracted our characters through
mise-en-scene and through the presentation of the characters.
The location in our film is filmed in Britain which means that the
audience can relate and identify to the film. Our film is likely to
attract the younger generation as we they may be familiar with the
areas being filmed . As well as this the ages of our characters are
key in attracting our audience for example the stepfather is seen
wearing a hoodie and urban clothing and this may relate to the
male audience.
Our target audience may also relate to our protagonist Grace, in
particular the females as they may relate to her feelings of hurt and
sadness as she handles life with her abusive stepfather.
12. What I have learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this
product
In terms of the equipment used our group allocated each member with
a piece of equipment in order to produce our film. I was given the role
as the sound person. I have learnt the importance of the microphone
when shooting a video, it is important to pick up the sound that you
intend to use in your final piece and to ensure that the voice of the
characters in dialogue is being picked up clearly .
My group used Fino Cut Pro to edit our film. Before I began my media
course I did not have much experience in editing , however with
guidance from my teacher I have learnt various techniques. I have
learnt basic techniques such as cutting a clip, snapping , adding sound
and text. I have also managed to add effects to my video to make it
more effective. I have learnt how all these elements combined such as
filming and editing require time and effort as they may be scenes that
have to be repeated until the final product is achieved, as well as this
editing requires patience in order to achieve a product that would
appeal effectively to your target audience.
13. Improvements and progression from my Preliminary task
When I look back at my preliminary task to my final product it is
evident that I have made many improvements and I have learnt
many factors that need to be considered when producing a film.
Planning
In the preliminary task we were given a choice of two types of
advert s to choose from and the target audience to address.
However in the final product we decided the genre of our film and
conducted our own primary and secondary research in order to
gather information about our target audience. This allowed us to
see the importance of planning and the impact it can have on our
product. As well as this in our main task we were able to analyse
other professional movies in our genre and this allowed us to
identify the conventions used in our chosen genre which influenced
our film. I also learnt the use of forms conventions in different
genres and the way that we can challenge them.
Time management
In the preliminary task timing was an issue as my group did not
manage to edit as much as we would have liked. However in the
main task my group was able to complete the planning and filming
on time, which gave us enough time to edit our film in the way we
wanted to. Furthermore my editing in the main task showed
evidence of improvements as I was able to add more effects in my
product.
