The Word of God
D. Thomas
Revelation19:13
And he was clothed with a clothing dipped in blood: and his name is called
The Word of God.
The Word of God. The infinite Fatherhas spokentwo greatwords to his
intelligent family. One word is nature. "The heavens declare his glory," etc.
The other word is Christ. He is the Logos. The latter word is specially
addressedto fallen humanity, and is a soul-redeeming word. In relation to this
Word the following things may be predicated. He is -
I. THE WORD OF ABSOLUTE INFALLIBILITY. Conventionally, men call
the Scriptures the Word of God. Mere traditional believers asserttheir
infallibility. The best, however, that can be said concerning that book is that it
contains the Word of God. It is not the Divine jewel, but the human chest.
Christ is the Word itself, absolutely true, the Bible. He is the Word. By him
every word, whether oral or written, written in whateverform, language,
style, or book, is to be tested, whether true or false. "No man hath seenthe
Father at any time:" nor Moses, orthe prophets, or the evangelists, but "the
only begottenSon, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath revealedhim."
Let us, therefore, rejectall words, wherever we find them, if they agree not
with the spirit, character, and aim of Christ.
II. THE WORD OF EXHAUSTLESS SIGNIFICANCE. There are faculties
and possibilities in him, ideas, purposes, and susceptibilities in him that will
take ages upon ages without end fully to develop. "In him dwells all the
fulness of God." In this he meets the law of mind, which bids it ever to search
after the new and the fresh.
III. THE WORD OF ALMIGHTY POWER. The characterof a word is
determined by the characterof the mind that utters it. Weak minds utter
weak words;strong minds, vigorous words. The words of some are as empty
as the wind; others are as vigorous as electricity; they shatterthe mountains
and shake the globe. Christ, as the Word, is Almighty. He has not only created
Christendom, but by him were "all things created."
IV. THE WORD OF UNIVERSAL INTERPRETABILITY. Even the written
words that make up what we call the Bible are frequently uninterpretable.
Hence their renderings and meanings are constantly fluctuating, and often
contradictive. But here is a word that stands forever - "the same yesterday,
and today, and forever." This Word is a life. A life a child caninterpret; and
the greaterthe life of a man, the more generous, truthful, loving he is, the
more readily a child can read and understand him. Hence no life is so
interpretable as Christ's life. - D.T.

Adam Clarke Commentary
He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood - To show that he was just
come from recent slaughter. The description is takenfrom Isaiah63:2, Isaiah
63:3, where Judas Maccabeus, orsome other conqueror, is described.
The Word of God - Written in the Targum, and in other Jewishwritings, ‫ייד‬

person, and not a word spoken. See the notes on John 1:1, etc.
Albert Barnes'Notes onthe Whole Bible
And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood - Red, as if dipped in blood
- emblem of slaughter. The original of this image is probably Isaiah63:2-3.
See the notes on that passage.
And his name is calledThe Word of God - The name which in Revelation
19:12, it is said that no one knew but he himself. This name is Ὁ λόγος τοῦ
Θεοῦ Ho logos touTheouor “the Logos ofGod.” That is, this is his unique
name; a name which belongs only to him, and which distinguishes him from
all other beings. The name “Logos,”as applicable to the Son of God, and
expressive of his nature, is found in the New Testamentonly in the writings of
John, and is used by him to denote the higher or divine nature of the Saviour.
In regard to its meaning, and the reasonwhy it is applied to him, see the notes
on John 1:1. The readeralso may consult, with greatadvantage, an article by
Prof. Stuart in the Bibliotheca Sacra, vol. vii. pp. 16-31. The following may be
some of the reasons why it is said Revelation19:12 that no one understands
this but he himself:
(1)No one but he can understand its full import, as it implies so high a
knowledge ofthe nature of the Deity;
(2)no one but he can understand the relation which it supposes in regard to
God, or the relation of the Son to the Father;
(3)no one but he can understand what is implied in it, regardedas the method
in which God reveals himself to his creatures onearth;
(4)no one but he can understand what is implied in it in respectto the manner
in which God makes himself knownto other worlds.
It may be added, as a further illustration of this, that none of the attempts
made to explain it have left the matter so that there are no questions unsolved
which one would be glad to ask.
John Gill's Exposition of the Whole Bible
And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood,.... Either in his own, by
which he became the Saviour of his church and people; or else in the blood of
his saints, he now comes to avenge;or rather in the blood of his enemies, with
which he appears as stained, before the battle is fought, the victory being sure,
and their slaughterunavoidable: the metaphor is takenfrom persons treading
in a winepress, whose garments are stained with blood of grapes;see
Revelation19:15. Here may be also an allusion to the Roman general's
vesture, which was sometimes purple or scarlet, in which he fought, as did
LucullusF19.
And his name is calledthe Word of God; the name of Christ, often used by
John in his Gospel, epistles, andin this book, John 1:1 1 John 1:1. Of the
signification, reason, and import of this name; see Gill on John 1:1. The
reasonwhy he is calledby it here may be partly to express his greatness,
glory, and majesty, this being a name which principally belongs to him, is a
person, as the Creatorof all things, and as previous to his incarnation; and
partly because all the promises of God in his word, and which are all yea, and
amen in Christ, will be now shortly fulfilled.
Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible
vesture dipped in blood — Isaiah 63:2 is alluded to here, and in Revelation
19:15, end. There the blood is not His own, but that of His foes. So here the
blood on His “vesture,” reminding us of His own blood shed for even the
ungodly who trample on it, is a premonition of the shedding of their blood in
righteous retribution. He sheds the blood, not of the godly, as the harlot and
beastdid, but of the blood-stained ungodly, including them both.
The Word of God — who made the world, is He also who under the same
characterand attributes shall make it anew. His title, Son of God, is
applicable in a lowersense, also to His people;but “the Word of God”
indicates His incommunicable Godhead, joined to His manhood, which He
shall then manifest in glory. “The Bride does not fear the Bridegroom;her
love castethout fear. She welcomes Him; she cannot be happy but at His side.
The Lamb [Revelation19:9, the aspectof Christ to His people at His coming]
is the symbol of Christ in His gentleness. Who would be afraid of a lamb?
Even a little child, instead of being scared, desires to caress it. There is
nothing to make us afraid of God but sin, and Jesus is the Lamb of God that
taketh awaythe sin of the world. What a fearful contrastis the aspectwhich
He will weartowards His enemies! Not as the Bridegroomand the Lamb, but
as the [avenging] judge and warrior stainedin the blood of His enemies.”

Arrayed (περιβεβλημενος — peribeblēmenos). Perfectpassive participle of
περιβαλλω — periballō to clothe, often in this book.
In a garment (ιματιον— himation). Accusative case afterthe passive
participle περιβεβλημενος — peribeblēmenos (ρεραντισμενον —
rerantismenon). Perfectpassive participle of ραντιζω — rantizō in the
predicate accusative caseagreeing with ιματιον— himation A Q here read
βεβαμμενον— bebammenon (perfect passive participle of βαπτω — baptō to
dip). Probably ρεραντισμενον — rerantismenon (sprinkled) is correct, because
the picture comes from Isaiah63:3, where Aquila and Symmachus use
ραντιζω — rantizō The use of βεβαμμενον— bebammenon (dipped) is a
bolder figure and Charles considers it correct. In either case it is the blood of
Christ‘s enemies with which his raiment (ιματιον — himation perhaps a
χλαμυς — chlamus Matthew 27:28, Matthew 27:31)is sprinkled or dipped as
the case maybe, not his own blood on Calvary (Revelation1:5; Revelation
5:9; Revelation7:14; Revelation12:11), but proleptically and prophetically
the blood of Christ‘s enemies. αιματι — Haimati can be either locative case
with βεβαμμενον— bebammenon (dipped in blood) or instrumental with
ρεραντισμενον — rerantismenon (sprinkled with blood).
The Word of God (ο Λογος του τεου — ho Logos tou theou). Some scholars
hold this addition inconsistentwith Revelation19:12, but it may be merely the
explanation of the secretname or still another name besides that known only
to himself. The personal use of the Logos applied to Christ occurs only in the
Johannine writings unless that is the idea in Hebrews 4:12. In John 1:1, John
1:14 it is merely ο Λογος — ho Logos (the Word), in 1 John 1:1 ο Λογος της
ζωης — ho Logos tēs zōēs (the Word of Life), while here it is ο Λογος του τεου
— ho Logos tou theou (the Word of God), one of the strongestarguments for
identity of authorship. The idiom here is one common in Luke and Paul for
the teaching of Christ (Luke 5:1; Luke 8:11, etc.; 1 Corinthians 14:36;2
Corinthians 2:17, etc.). Jesus is himself the final and perfect revelationof God
to men (Hebrews 1:1.).

The Word of God ( ὁ Λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ )
This name for our Lord is found in the New Testamentonly in the writings of
John. It is one of the links which connects Revelationwith John's other
writings. Compare John 1:1-14; 1 John 1:1. Some object to this on the ground
that, in the Gospelof John, the term is used absolutely, the Word, whereas
here it is qualified, the Word of God, which the Evangelistnowhere employs,
and in 1 John 1:1, the Word of life. But, as Alford observes:“It may be left to
any fair-judging readerto decide whether it be not a far greaterargument for
identity that the remarkable designation ὁ Λόγος theWord is used, than for
diversity, that, on the solemn occasiondescribedin the Apocalypse, the
hitherto unheard adjunct of God is added.” The idea of God which is
representedhere, underlies the absolute term the Word in John 1:1. It is
further urged that in the Gospel ὁ Λόγος is applied to the prehistoric Christ,
while in this passageit is applied to the historic Christ. But the name of the
historic Christ is that referred to in Revelation19:12, not in Revelation19:13.
It is the name “which no one knowethbut He Himself,” expressing the
characterof His whole redeeming work. The name in Revelation19:13is that
which belongs originally and essentiallyto Him.

Matthew Poole's EnglishAnnotations on the Holy Bible
And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood; either to denote that he
was he who redeemedus by his blood; or rather, to signify that he was now
coming forth to shed the blood of his enemies, both in vindication of his own
honour and glory, or of his people; in which notion it also agrees with Isaiah’s
vision of him, Isaiah 63:1-3:Their blood shall be sprinkled upon my
garments, and I will stain all my raiment.
And his name is calledThe Word of God:
See Poole on"John 1:1". He is also calledthe Word, Revelation1:2, a name
given him hardly by any exceptthis apostle.
Justin Edwards' Family Bible New Testament

His name is-The Word of God; applied here, as in John 1:1, to the second
person of the god-head.

13. βεβαμμένον. See crit. note. There is nothing to suggesteitherβεβαμμένον,
ῥεραντισμένον, or ῥεραμμένονin Isaiah63:1; Isaiah63:3, LXX.: the Hebrew
would suggestboth, “Theodotion” atany rate the latter: whichever be the
original reading the other is probably an additional reference to Isaiah:for
until there was a system of something like chapters and verses, marginal or
interlinear quotations had to serve the purpose now served by marginal
references. In Isaiahthe Conqueroris describedas stained with the blood of
His enemies. If this decides the primary meaning here, it is legitimate for the
Christian to remember, in interpreting both passages, that the waythat Christ
overcomes His enemies is by shedding, not their blood, but His own. Moreover
in Isaiah the Redeemerand champion of Israel is the Father rather than
Christ: so that, as the figure has certainly receivedsome change in its
application, it is unobjectionable to suppose a direct reference to the Passion.
If so, as this passageobviouslyrefers back to the vision of the Man Child, it
would be impossible to regardthat vision as purely Jewish.
ὁ Λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ. The only place in Scripture (unless Hebrews 4:12 is to be so
interpreted, which is not probable) where this exactphrase is used of the
personalWord, the Son of God. But of course the use of “the Word” in St
John 1:1 is the same in principle and meaning.
Coffman's Commentaries on the Bible
And he is arrayed in a garment sprinkled with blood: and his name is called
the Word of God.
Garment sprinkled with blood ... The imagery of this is thought to reflectthe
figure of the winepress in Isaiah63, but there the blood was the blood of the
Lord's enemies. As Caird pointed out, "The Rider's garment is already
soakedin blood before the battle begins."[41]Some point out that Christ has
already won many victories before the one pointed out here; but we seemto
be compelled to seek the meaning symbolized by the bloodstains in that
eternal victory of the Cross, where the enabling victory of all that came
afterwards was achieved. "His garment is dipped in blood because Christ
shed his blood for mankind."[42]
And his name is calledthe Word of God ... "This is a title of Christ used only
by the apostle John (John 1:1,14,1 John1:1,5:7)."[43]The apostle is thus
linked with all three writings.

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible
13. A vesture dipped in blood—The allusion may be to Isaiah 63:1-2, where a
warrior comes from Bozrah, with garments “dyed,” that is, “sprinkled,” with
blood. But here the word dipt, βεβαμμενον, suggests thatthere may be an
allusion to his own atoning blood. This view lies in close connexionwith his
gospelname next given, and with the white raiment of the armies, next verse.
His name—Known to the world as his gospelname.
Word of God—The incarnate expressionto men of the divine nature. Hence a
name of truth, of revelation, and of salvation. And so our John says in his
Gospel, Revelation1:14, “The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us…
full of grace and truth.”
The armies— Namely, of martyred, disembodied spirits; the souls once under
the altar, Revelation6:9-11; then, on Mount Zion, with the Lamb, Revelation
14:1-5 : next, here; and finally, as the souls of Revelation20:4.
Fine linen—The righteousness ofthe saints, Revelation19:18.
White—The leader is arrayed in red; the armies are in white. They are
whitened by his crimson. They bear no carnal armour; they are the white
warriors for purity and peace.
Foy E. Wallace'sCommentaryon the Book of Revelation
In verse thirteen, the Rider was calledby a third name --The Word of God.
The Word was not a name without significance. The same Johnof the
apocalypse referredto the Sonof God as the Word in the gospelofJohn l:1-
14. The word is the vehicle of conveying thoughts--and Jesus Christ was the
full and complete expressionof God's will to man; the beginning and the end
of all revelation;hence, his title The Word. The name The Word Of God,
signifies the armament of the warfare in which he was in this vision to engage-
-it was the conflictof Christianity with heathenism, and the truth was the
weaponagainstall error.
Expository Notes ofDr. Thomas Constable
The blood on His robe is probably the blood of his enemies, in view of the
context (cf. Isaiah63:2-3). John did not see Christ as the redeemerin this
vision but as the warrior and judge. As many of the symbols in this passage,
this one is also proleptic, anticipating His victory. The "Word of God" is a
familiar title signifying that He is the expressionof God"s mind and heart (
Isaiah49:2; John 1:1; John 1:14; cf. 1 John 1:1; Hebrews 1:1). This "word"
includes prophecies about God"s purposes ( Revelation19:9; Revelation1:2;
Revelation17:17). It is the same "word" that brought the worlds into
existence as God"s active agent( John 1:3; cf. Genesis 1:3; Genesis 1:6;
Genesis 1:9; Psalm33:6; Hebrews 4:12). As a title in Revelation, "Wordof
God" emphasizes the authoritative declarationthat results in the destruction
of God"s enemies rather than the self-revelationof God. [Note: Mounce,
p345.]
Schaff's Popular Commentary on the New Testament
Revelation19:13. And he is arrayed in a garment sprinkled with blood, and
his name is calledThe Word of God. The idea is takenfrom Isaiah 63:2-3, and
is therefore that of a garment sprinkled not with the Warrior’s own blood, but
with the blood of His enemies. ‘Is called,’i.e is, and has been always, called.
The resemblance to John 1:1 and 1 John 1:1 need not be enlarged on.
The Expositor's Greek Testament
Revelation19:13. “Dipped in blood” (i.e., the blood of his foes):from the
“crimsonedgarments” of Yahveh in Isaiah 63.;cf. also Revelation19:15 with
“I have trodden the wine-press.… Yea, I trod them in mine anger(
κατεπάτησα αὐτοὺς ἐν θυμῷ μου), and trampled them in my fury,” etc. Add
Targ. Palest, onGenesis 49:11, “How beauteous is the King Messiah!Binding
his loins and going forth to war againstthem that hate him, he will slay kings
with princes, and make the rivers red with the blood of their slain, and his
hills white with the fat of their mighty ones, his garments will be dipped in
blood, and he himself like the juice of the wine-press.” The secretname
denotes his superiority to all appeals;it indicates that the awful and punitive
vigour of his enterprise made him impervious to the invocations of men. This
is no Logos who dwells among men to give light and life; it is a stern, militant,
figure of vengeance attacking the rebellious. Hence his name is mysterious;
for “the identity, or at leastthe close connectionbetweena thing and its name,
not only makes the utterance of a holy name an invocationwhich insures the
actualpresence of the deity invoked, it also makes the holy name too sacred
for common use or even for use at all” (Jevons’Introd. Hist. Relig. 361). The
passagereflects certainphases oflater messianic belief in Judaism, which had
been tinged by the Babylonian myth of Marduk, Ea’s victorious son, to whom
divine authority was entrusted. Marduk’s triumph was explained by
Babylonian theologians as causedby the transference to him of the divine
Name (so Michael, En. 69:14). 13b may be a Johannine gloss upon the
unknown name of Revelation19:12 (cf. Philippians 2:9-10), under the
influence of passageslike Hebrews 4:15, Sap. 18. (“Thine all-powerful Logos
leapt from heaven out of the royal throne, as a stern warrior into the midst of
the doomed land, bearing the sharp swordof Thine unfeigned
commandment”), and Enoch xc. 38 (cp. howeverBeer, ad loc).— κέκληται,
perf. of existing state, “the past action of which it is the result being left out of
thought” (Burton, 75). If the above explanation of the mysterious name be
correct, the author’s idea was evidently forgottenor ignoredby some later
editor or copyistof the Johannine school, who inserted this gloss in order to
clearup the obscure reference, and at the same time to bring forward the
transcendentname widely appropriated by that schoolfor Christ in a pacific
and religious sense (so nearly all critical editors). In any case the two
conceptions ofthe Apocalypse and the Fourth gospelhave little or nothing in
common except the word. But the introduction of this apparently illogical
sequence between12 and 13 might be justified in part by E. B. D. 94, “I am he
that cometh forth, advancing, whose name is unknown; I am Yesterday, and
Seerof millions of years is my name”. The application of such titles to Jesus
certainly gives the impression that these high, honourable predicates are “not
yet joined to his personwith any intrinsic and essentialunity” (Baur); they
are rather due to the feeling that “Christ must have a position adequate to the
greatexpectations concerning the lastthings, of which he is the chief subject”.
But their introduction is due to the semi-Christianisedmessianic conceptions
and the divine categories by which the writer is attempting to interpret his
experience of Jesus. Backwards and forwards, as pre-existent and future, the
redeemeris magnified for the prophet’s consciousness.

Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible - Unabridged
And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is calledThe

Vesture dipped in blood - (Isaiah 63:2 : cf. Revelation19:15, end.) The blood
there is not His own, but that of His foes. Here the blood on His "vesture,"
reminding us of His own blood, shed for even the ungodly who trample on it,
prefigures the shedding of their blood in retribution: not that of the godly, as
the harlot and beastshed, but of the blood-stained ungodly, including them
both.
The Word of God - who made the world, is He who, under the same
character, shallmake it anew. Son of God is applicable, in a lowersense, also
to His people; but "the Word of God" indicates His incommunicable
Godhead, which, joined to His manhood, He shall manifest in glory. 'The

Walter Scott's Commentary on Revelation
Revelation19:13. — "Clothedwith a garment dipped in blood."{*It seems
absurd to apply the "garmentdipped in blood" to the blood of the Cross, as
many do. The Lord is here viewed on a mission of judgment, not one of grace.
The blood is not His own, but that of His enemies. The context clearly
determines the sense.}This striking and impressive figure proclaims His
vengeance in judicial dealing with the opposing hosts of apostate Europe who
have come out to do battle with the Lamb. In Isaiah63:1-4 we witness the
triumphant return from the land of Edom, and from its capitalcity Bozrah, of
the Lord with vengeance in His heart and His garments and vesture stained
with the blood of His enemies, but here His garment dipped in blood is
witnessedere He enters on the conflict, a sure tokenthat righteous vengeance
shall be meted out to the full upon the gatheredhosts under their two great
chiefs, the Beastand the False Prophet,
13. — "His Name is calledthe Word of God." Of the eight sacredwriters of
the New Testament, Johnis the only one who applies this title to Christ. As the
Word He represents and expresses Godin His Being, character, and works.
He is "The Word of Life" (1 John 1:1), as being in His Personand ways its
living embodiment. He is termed "The Word of God," as perfectly expressing
Him in judgment. As the WORD He has personal, independent, eternal
existence (John 1:1-2); and as the WORD He is the makerof all things (v. 3).
He is the Revealerof God, the ONE Who makes Him known. Our words
ought to be the exact expressionof what we are; the words of Christ were the
absolute expressionof what He everis (John 8:25). As the WORD He reveals
God in His essentialnature as light and love, and as the "only begottenSon"
He declares the Father. The first without the secondwould have left a huge
blank, for the heart craves for a known and enjoyed relationship. God is our
Father.
The title here used of Christ has peculiar significance in this connection. It is
God Who is here seenroused to action. His very nature demands the
judgment of those who on earth madly attempt to thwart His purpose to set
His Sonas King on Mount Zion and put into His hands earth's government.
Christ, "The Word of God," is the absolute expressionof God in the scene of
judgment about to take place.
E.M. Zerr's Commentary on SelectedBooksofthe New Testament
Vesture dipped in blood is because Christ shed his blood for the sake of
mankind, The Word of God is the name which all men can read and hence is
not a secret, but they cannot realize what it means unless they appropriate
that name to themselves by wholeheartedobedience to its commandments.
(See the name at John 1:1.
Revelation19:13. And he is clothed with a garment dipt in blood, and his
name was called[Note:The reading that is by much the best supported is καὶ

GOD. The garment dipt in blood points to Isaiah63:1-3, comp. here ch.
Revelation14:20. The blood, according to this passage, whichis also alluded
to in Revelation19:15, is that of the enemies of God's people. The divine hero
has alreadyvanquished six phases of the ungodly power of the world, and has
thereby given a sure pledge of the destruction of the seventh, againstwhich he
now goes forth. Bengel:"All his enemies must fall before him, and contribute
to the renown of his might. Thus they still yield some profit." The name, "the
Word of God,"[Note:There canbe no doubt that we should render the name
so. For λό γος τοῦ θεοῦ, wheneverit occurs besides in the New Testament,
means "the Word of God," and especiallydoes so in the Apocalypse;comp.
ch. 1:2 , 9 , 6:9 , 20:4.] a must be used here with reference to the clothing.
Otherwise Revelation19:14 is incomprehensible. The transition from Christ
to his army is there made through the medium of the clothing; and the
statementrespecting his name here cannotinterrupt this connection;it can
only contain what must serve for an explanation of the clothing. Now a bridge
betweenthe clothing and the name is supplied by Hebrews 4:12, "Forthe
Word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than a two-edgedsword, and
pierces even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and joints and
marrow;" comp. in regardto the passageonch. Revelation1:16. By this the
name appears as the interpretation of the apparel. To both the destroying

nothing of a creatednature is able to oppose. Whatthe Word of God is able to
accomplishis shewn by the first chapter of sacredScripture. By it heavenand
earth were called into being (Psalms 33:6). If Christ is the personalWord of
God—if everything, which else is calledGod's word, is but a single fragment
of his nature—how should it ever be imagined that anything createdcould
possibly stand before him? At the terrible sound of this name the ten kings
must disperse like light froth. Bengel:"It is not said here, His name is called
Jesus;for he manifests himself here, not as the Saviourof his people, but as
the destroyerof his enemies. He will, therefore, be called here by that name,
which is older than the name Jesus. The name Jesus especiallyunfolds his
grace, and the name, the Word of God, his majesty. How deep must that,
which is indicated by this name, lie in the unsearchable Godhead? A man's
word is not only that which he expresses with his lips, and causes to be heard
by the ear, but that also which he has within himself in his mind, and
produces in his thoughts. If this internal word did not exist, it could not be
brought forth into any form of speechor utterance. If even man's word is thus
inward, how profound must be the seatof God's word, beyond any
comprehensionof ours, and what emotions should it stir, as often as it is
declared, in respectto the creationor to the other works and witnesses of
God, God speaks, the Lord testifies, etc. Against him, whose name is the Word
of God, all his enemies, and in particular the beast, are but as stubble to the
fire. With the spirit or breath of his lips he will slaythe wicked, Isaiah11:4.
And no sinner or liar cananywhere stand before him." We are not, with De
Wette, to understand by the Word of God him "who has revealed the Word of
God, and indeed first as doctrine, then as prophecy."Forin that case this
name would be appropriated to Christ as the most perfect teacher. But it is
againstthe characterof this whole section, in which only a polemicalname
suits one that threatens destruction; also againstthe connectionwith what
immediately precedes, and againstJohn 1 (Vitringa: Id vero aliennm est ab
oratione Johannis, qui τὸ ν λό γον jam ante condita saecula aitfuisse in sinu
patris et apud patrem). By the name of the Word of God Christ appears in the
writings of John only here, in John 1 of his Gospel, and in the beginning of his
first epistle. The compositionof the Apocalypse by St John derives no small
support from this, and all attempts have been in vain to set it aside. Some have
sought to distinguish betweenthe use of the expressionhere and in the other
writings of John, by alleging that here the Logos orWord of God is spokenof,
as if there also the Word could be any thing but the Word of God, and as if
here that were not indispensable, which is there supplied by the connection.
"The name (writes Köslin, p. 184)is primarily ascribed to him only in his
exalted state, and now indeed first there, and inasmuch as he comes down to
the earth in the capacityof an avenging judge." As if Christ could become the
Word of God in the course of time; as if the name itself did not point to a
necessityin the divine nature existing even from eternity; as if Christ, because
he is the Word of God, and, inasmuch as he is so, must not have been in the
beginning with God! Christ is not the Word of God as the one, "who renders
the divine will efficient outwardly or upon the earth," but because he is the
Word of God he does this also among other things, he throws down the kings
of the earth with that same omnipotence by which he originally calledthe
earth into existence. John, Lücke conceives, does not callthe "historical
Christ" simpliciter the Word, as if the name here did not, preciselyas the
name Michael, in ch. 12 , designate Christ in respectto his divine nature, in
which alone there was to be found the security for his last victory over an
ungodly world. The allegation, besides, thatthe expressionis here "copied, not
that originally of John," has been already disproved, by the considerationthat
the name of the Word of God here, though used essentiallyin the same
significationas in the Gospeland the first epistle of John, is still employed in a
quite peculiar and original respect. It would never have occurredto an
imitator to serve himself of such an epithet as a hammer, wherewith to break
in pieces the rock of the enemies of God's kingdom. That this was by no means
an obvious thought is evident from the difficulty it has occasionedto
expositors.
If Christ is the living Word of God, then all particular words of God must be
spokenthrough his mediation, nor can there be any word of God which is not
also a testimony of Jesus Christ, nor againa testimony of Christ, which is not
a word of God (ch. Revelation1:9, Revelation20:4;John 14:24).

robe dipped in blood
Dipped is βεβαμμένον[bebammenon], perfectpassive participle: having been
dipped. This verb is from βαπτω [baptō]: to baptize. But here, it probably
denotes garments stained in blood.28 Used of “coloring cloth dip into dye, dye
(Rev. 19:13‣ ).”29 Patristic evidence anda few manuscripts have variations of
ῥαντίζω [hrantizō]: to “sprinkle someone orsomething,”30 but the evidence is
weak and ambiguous.31
Some suggestthe blood is His own:
Notice how Jesus will be proudly arrayed in His garment which is coveredin
blood; this will be the basis of divine judgment—that the world has spurned
His blood. Jesus wears itproudly; we will be dressedin our white garments—
He will be arrayedin His bloody one. The host that will accompanyJesus is
proof positive of the effectivenessofHis blood.32
As attractive as this idea may be, it has severalweaknesses:(1) nowhere in
Scripture is there indication that Jesus wears His own blood; (2) His blood
was spilled at the cross during His First Coming for redemption. This is a
picture of His SecondComing which is in judgment and wrath. This is not His
own atoning blood which is associatedwith His First Coming (Lev. 14:51;
Rev. 1:5‣ ; 5:9‣ ). This is the blood of His enemies from His trampling them in
the “winepress ofthe fierceness andwrath of Almighty God” (Isa. 63:3; Luke
19:27;Rev. 14:20‣ ;19:15‣ ).33 SeeBloodStainedGarments.
calledthe Word of God
Called is κέκληται [keklētai], perfectpassive:having been called. This is a
unique title of Jesus usedby John the Apostle (John 1:1; 1Jn. 1:1; 2:14; 5:7
TR; Rev. 1:2‣ ; Rev. 19:13‣ )and provides evidence that he is the author of
the book of Revelation. See Authorship.
Like God’s literal word which He has magnified above His name (Ps. 138:2),
God highly exalted Jesus and has given Him the name above every name
(Php. 2:9). Scripture informs us: “By the word of the LORD the heavens were
made and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth” (Ps. 33:6 cf. Heb.
11:3; 2Pe. 3:5). Elsewhere, Johnuses this title to emphasis Jesus as the
revelation of God in His incarnation:
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen
with our eyes, which we have lookedupon, and our hands have handled,
concerning the Word of life— the life was manifested, and we have seen, and
bear witness, and declare to you that eternallife which was with the Father
and was manifestedto us— that which we have seenand heard we declare to
you, that you also may have fellowshipwith us; and truly our fellowship is
with the Fatherand with His Son Jesus Christ. (1Jn. 1:1-3)
The Logos or Word is the expressionofGod’s nature in understandable
terms, and whether those terms be mercy or judgment they are both equally
the messageofGod.34
This title also emphasizes Jesus’role in creation(John 1:1-3; Eph. 3:9; Col.
1:16; Heb. 1:2; Rev. 3:14‣ )—a keytheme explaining why God has ultimate
dominion to retake the earth at His SecondComing (Rev. 3:14‣ ; 4:11‣ ;
10:6‣ ).

The Orthodox Study Bible does not make specific comment on that element of
that verse, but refers us to Is. 63:2, 3; John 1:1, 14.
Rev. 19:13
"His 'robe dipped in blood' (see Gen. 49:10, 11;Is. 63:1-6) unites Christ's
sacrifice onthe Cross, granting forgiveness ofsin and fulfilling all
righteousness, withHis making war 'in righteousness'(v. 11), judging sin."
So, you see, no mention is made of the phrase "Word of God," but
conventionalwisdom has it that since Christ came as a Man into the world
and talkedto us directly, and He is God, then He is the Word of God. What he
says, we know is from God, since He is God. God the Fatheronly gave us
words once, in the form of the Ten Commandments, through Moses.
Everything Jesus saidis literally the word of God. The Holy Spirit gives some
the ability to learn new languages and go into foreigncountries to preach
Jesus Christ, crucified and resurrected, to those who have never heard of it.
So all three Persons ofthe Holy Trinity "communicate" either with us or
through us, but only Christ gave us an abundance of His ownwords right out
of His own mouth directly...as God. He is the Word of God. That's why the
Bible, which contains the words He spoke is also calledthe Word of God.
There is not one word ever spokenby Jesus Christ that was not the word of
God.
The devil used the names of God to deceive the whole world into thinking he
was God, but the WORD OF GOD could not be used by the devil.
The WORD OF GOD is God the Father's only true words that are not mixed
with lies of the devil. The WORD OF GOD canonly be found twice in the Old
Testament, and these verses are the key to understanding the TRUTH.
Jesus became the living Word of God, the word was castdown to the earth
and the flesh body of Jesus became it's dwelling place, the Christ was the
spiritual body which became one with the flesh body knownas Jesus.
Thereby making the saying "you shall eat my body and drink my blood"
mean listen to the WORDS that I Jesus speak to you, for they are not my
WORDS they are the WORD of Him (the Lord, My (Our) Father) who sent
me.
It is The Logos, which beganas a pagan philosophy concerning Zeus, written
by the Greek PhilosopherHeraclitus, hundreds of years before Iesus. The
Logos was copied, almostword for word, into the Book ofJohn and it appears
also in Revelation. This is also the same paganphilosophy the church
borrowedthe Trinity from.

The Bible’s answer
The expression“the word of God” usually refers to a divine messageorto a
collectionof those messages. (Luke 11:28) In a few places, “The Wordof God”
or “the Word” is used as a personaltitle.—Revelation19:13;John 1:14.
A divine message. The prophets often stated that the messagestheydelivered
were God’s word. For example, Jeremiahintroduced his prophetic messages
with the expression“the word of Jehovahcame to me.” (Jeremiah 1:4, 11, 13;
2:1) Before telling Saul that God had chosenhim as king, the prophet Samuel
said: “Stand still now, so that I may let you hear the word of God.”—1 Samuel
9:27.
A personaltitle. “The Word” also appears in the Bible as a title for Jesus
Christ, both as a spirit in heaven and as a human on earth. Considersome
reasons forthis conclusion:
The Word lived before all other creation. “In the beginning was the Word . . .
This one was in the beginning with God.” (John 1:1, 2) Jesus is “the firstborn
of all creation. . . He is before all other things.”—Colossians 1:13-15,17.
The Word came to earth as a human. “The Word became flesh and resided
among us.” (John 1:14) Christ Jesus “emptiedhimself and took a slave’s form
and became human.”—Philippians 2:5-7.
The Word is God’s Son. After stating that “the Word became flesh,” as
quoted above, the apostle John continued: “We had a view of his glory, a
glory such as belongs to an only-begotten sonfrom a father.” (John 1:14) John
also wrote:“Jesus is God’s Son.”—1 John4:15.
The Word possessesgodlike attributes. “The Word was a god,” or “was
divine.” (John 1:1; An American Translation)Jesus is “the reflection of God’s
glory and the exactrepresentationof his very being.”—Hebrews 1:2, 3.
The Word rules as a king. The Bible states that on the head of the Word of
God are “many royal headbands.” (Revelation19:12, 13; footnote)The Word
is also named “King of kings and Lord of lords.” (Revelation19:16) Jesus is
called“the King of those who rule as kings and Lord of those who rule as
lords.”—1 Timothy 6:14, 15.
The Word serves as God’s spokesman. The title “the Word” apparently
identifies its beareras one whom God uses to conveyinformation and
instructions. Jesus saidthat he performed this role: “The Fatherwho sent me
has himself given me a commandment about what to sayand what to speak. . .
. So whateverI speak, I speak just as the Fatherhas told me.”—John12:49,
50.

Who is Jesus?
The Word
Part III of the Series. Bible study on Jesus as the Word.
Thus far in this series, we've talkedabout Jesus as God, and our Creator.
In this article, we talk about Jesus as the Word, and the significance this bears
in reference to the working of Jesus in our lives.
Jesus is the Word of God
As we've discussedin the first two articles, Jesus is the Word.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word
was God" (Jn. 1:1-3).
In Revelation, John sees Jesuscoming on a white horse to wage warwith the
enemies of God.
"He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word
of God" (Rev. 19:13).
Jesus'WeaponIs His Word
Jesus fights evil with His word.
To the church in Pergamum, Jesus referred to Himself as the one who has the
two-edgedsword, indicating that His word is the weaponof God (Rev. 2:12;
Heb. 4:12).
Then in the vision of His war with the beastand the kings of the earth, Jesus
defeatedthem with the swordthat comes from His mouth -- The Word of
God.
"From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down
the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine
press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty" (Rev. 19:15).
"And the rest were killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him
who saton the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh" (Rev.
19:21).
As the Word, Jesus is the Powerof God
The word of the cross is the powerof God. Therefore, whenwe preachChrist,
we are preaching the power of God.
"Forthe word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us
who are being savedit is the powerof God" (1 Cor. 1:18).
"But we preachChrist crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles
foolishness, but to those who are the called, both Jews andGreeks, Christthe
powerof God . . ." (1 Cor. 1:23-24).
Paul's statements are in perfect harmony with the fact that the gospelis the
powerof God unto salvation.
"ForI am not ashamedof the gospel, for it is the powerof God for salvation
to everyone who believes . . ." (Rom. 1:16).
Since Jesus is the Word of God, He is the power of God for salvation(Rev.
19:13;1 Cor. 1:18, 24).
Statements in Hebrews and First Thessaloniansalso enlightenus regarding
Jesus as the Word and power of God, as He works in us.
"But to those who are the called, both Jews andGreeks, Christthe powerof
God . . . (1 Cor. 1:24).
Now the Godof peace . . . equip you in every good thing to do His will,
working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ. . .
(Heb. 13:20-21).
". . . the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe" (1 Th.
2:13).
Jesus is the powerof God, who works in us through the Word of God.
As the Word, Jesus is the Wisdom of God
Paul also tells us that Jesus is the wisdom of God.
"But we preachChrist crucified . . . the wisdom of God" (1 Cor. 1:23-24).
"But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from
God . . ." (1 Cor. 1:30).
Therefore Paul says:
All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are in Christ (Col. 2:3).
The word of Christ richly dwells in us, with all wisdom (Col. 3:16).
As the Word, Jesus is the Truth
The word of God is truth (Jn. 17:17).
So then, as the Word, Jesus is the truth.
"And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory,
glory as of the only begottenfrom the Father, full of grace and truth" (Jn.
1:14).
Therefore, Jesus saidofHimself that He's the truth.
"I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Fatherbut
through Me: (Jn. 14:6).
He is:
The true bread (John 6:32).
The true light (John 1:9).
The true vine (John 15:1).
The faithful and true (Rev. 19:11).
Jesus is the one and only standard of truth.
Anything that disagrees with His word is false. It's from the devil, the father
of all lies (Jn. 8:44).
Anything in agreementwith His word is truth.
They are words of sober truth, as the truth is in Jesus (Acts. 26:25;Eph. 4:21).
Because, "the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness andrighteousness and
truth" (Eph. 5:9).

Spiritual Meaning of REVELATION 19:13
previous - next - text - summary - Revelation - BM Home - Full Page
AR 825. Verse 13.And He was clothed with a garment dipped in blood, and
His name is calledthe Word of God, signifies the Divine truth in its ultimate
sense, orthe Word in the letter, to which violence has been offered. By a
garment is signified truth clothing good(n. 166, 212, 328);and when
concerning the Word, it signifies the Word in the sense of the letter; for this is
like a garment, in which its spiritual and celestialsensesare clothed. By "the
blood" is signified violence offered to the Lord‘s Divine and to the Word (n.
327, 684). The reasonthat this is signified is that the Lord’s Divine truth in the
Word is signified by blood (n. 379, 653);wherefore by "shedding blood" is
signified to offer violence to the Lord‘s Divine and to the Word. By "the Word
of God" is signified here the Word in the sense of the letter; for violence has
been offered to this, but not to the Word in the spiritual sense, because this
sense has not been known; and if it had been known, violence would have been
offered to it also. Wherefore that sense was not revealeduntil after the Last
Judgment was accomplished, andthe New Church was to be instituted by the
Lord. Nor is it revealedto anyone at this day, except to him who is in Divine
truths from the Lord; see The Doctrine of the New Jerusalemconcerning the
SacredScripture (Sacredn. 26). That violence has been offeredto the Lord’s
Divine and to the Word, is plainly manifest from the Roman Catholic religious
persuasion, and from the religious persuasionof the Reformedconcerning
faith alone. The RomanCatholic religious persuasiongives forth that the
Lord‘s Human is not Divine, wherefore they have transferred all things of the
Lord to themselves:also that the Word is to be interpreted only by them; yet
the interpretation by them is everywhere contrary to the Divine truth of the
Word, as was shown in the explanation of the preceding chapter 18. It is
manifest from this, that violence is offeredto the Word by that religious
persuasion. In like manner by the religious persuasionof the Reformed
concerning faith alone. Neither does this make the Lord’s Human Divine, and
it founds theologyupon a single saying of Paul falsely understood; and it
therefore makes nothing of all the things which the Lord taught concerning
love and charity and concerning goodworks;which are yet so prominent that
everyone, if he only has eyes, cansee. The like was done with the Word by the
Jews. Theirreligious persuasionwas, that the Word was written for no others
but themselves, and thus that no others are meant therein; and that the
Messiahwho was to come would exalt them above all in the whole world: by
which and many other things they falsified and adulterated all things of the
Word. This is meant by these words in Isaiah:--
Who is this that cometh from Edom, having sprinkled garments from
Bozrah? wherefore art Thou red as to Thy garment, and Thy garments as of
him that treadeth in the wine-press? whence victoryis sprinkled upon My
garments, and I have polluted all My vesture (Isa. 63:1, 2, 3).
By "garments" here also the Divine truths of the Word are signified: by
"Edom" is signified red, here red from blood. Hence it is manifest that by
"clothedwith a garment dipped in blood, and His name is calledthe Word of
God," is signified the Divine truth in the ultimate sense, orthe Word in the
letter, to which violence has been offered.

The Word of God - Name of Jesus
My question is, why do people call the Bible the Word of God when it is
clearly a name given to Jesus? If you read the Bible believing that the Bible is
the Word of God it gives you a very different messagefrom reading it with the
understanding that Jesus being the Word of God.
In the King James Bible, when Word is capitalized, it refers to Jesus Christ.
We see Jesus Christcalledthe Word seventimes in the Bible: John 1:1
(3 times), 14; 1 John 1:1
; 5:7
; Revelation19:13
. However, there are many times when the Bible is referred to as the word of
God (with a lowercase "w"). Sometimes, we make a distinction betweenthe
living Word of God and the written word of God. However, even this is not
easysince the written word is also alive (Hebrews 4:12
). The two are sometimes hard to separate since both the Word and the word
of God are expressions ofHis person. Perhaps you are asking why people
tend to capitalize Word when referring to the Bible even though this is not
done in scripture. I think it is a matter of respectfor the Bible. In the same
manner, many people (myself included) tend to capitalize pronouns referring
to God. However, this is not the practice of the King James Bible. Certainly,
we are not denying scripture to do this. We are just following conventions of

WHY IS JESUS CHRIST CALLED “THE WORD OF GOD?”
by Shawn Brasseaux
This epithet is exclusive to the Apostle John’s writings—the Book ofJohn, the
Book of1 John, and the Book ofthe Revelation. It, or its abbreviated variant
“The Word,” appears seventimes in the whole Bible canon. John’s Gospel
Recordis designedto underscore Jesus Christ’s Deity. (Compare the openings
of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. John 1:1-4 is unique to John; Matthew,
Mark, and Luke all begin their accounts with events relating to Christ’s
humanity.) It is thus not surprising that John’s specialphrase, “the Word of
God,” is intended to accentuate Christ’s Deity:
John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God.”
John 1:14: “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we
beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begottenof the Father,)full of grace
and truth.”
1 John 1:1: “Thatwhich was from the beginning, which we have heard, which
we have seenwith our eyes, which we have lookedupon, and our hands have
handled, of the Word of life;….”
1 John 5:7: “Forthere are three that bear recordin heaven, the Father, the
Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”
Revelation19:13:“And he was clothedwith a vesture dipped in blood: and his
name is called The Word of God.”
The term “word” carries the idea of communication. In Greek, it is logos.
Depending on the context, logos canbe rendered as—“preaching,”
“something said,” “utterance,” “reason,” “saying,” “speech,” “talk,”
“account,” andso on. Think of our relatedEnglish words logic and logo. A
“logo,” forexample, is a symbol or designthat represents a group, idea, line of
products, and so on. This symbol conveys a message. The Greek wordis the
same line of thought.
According to Scripture, there are three Members/Persons in the Godhead or
Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Ghost (Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14;1
John 5:7). Unless they make themselves known in a specialway, we cannot see
them with our human eyes. The Personof Jesus Christ(God the Son) is a
representative of the Godhead. Turn to John 14:6-9: “[6] Jesus saithunto
him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but
by me. [7] If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also:and
from henceforth ye know him, and have seenhim. [8] Philip saith unto him,
Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. [9] Jesus saith unto him, Have I
been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that
hath seenme hath seenthe Father; and how sayestthou then, Shew us the
Father?”
What the Fatherand the Holy Spirit want us to see and know, Jesus Christ
reveals it to us so we can see and know. If we want to see how God lives, all we
have to do is read the Four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). This is
how God conductedHis own life in His own human flesh. Even today, we can
see Godliving His life in human flesh. This is the Church the Body of Christ
(all present-day believers in Jesus Christ). It is called“the Body of Christ”
because it is His life being manifestedthrough Christians—we are His arms,
His legs, His hands, His feet, and His voice. We accuratelyportray His life as
we walk daily in faith in His Word to us (more on this later).
Father God sentJesus Christ as His spokesmanto the nation Israel. For
example, John 7:16: “Jesus answeredthem, and said, My doctrine is not mine,
but his that sent me.” God the Fatherhad given some information to Jesus
Christ, so Jesus Christ could then relay it to Israel. Jesus is the Spokesmanof
the Godhead. He is “The Word of God” in this sense.
Now, read Matthew 15:24:“But he answeredand said, I am not sentbut unto
the lostsheep of the house of Israel.” Hebrews 3:1: “Wherefore, holy
brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, considerthe Apostle [sent-one]
and High Priestof our profession, Christ Jesus;….” WhenJesus Christ left
Earth and ascendedback into Heaven, He sent His 12 Apostles to be His
spokesmento Israel. They were to repeat what He taught them.
Matthew chapter 10: “[5]These twelve Jesus sentforth, and commanded
them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the
Samaritans enter ye not: [6] But go rather to the lost sheepof the house of
Israel…. [16]Behold, I send you forth as sheepin the midst of wolves:be ye
therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” And verse 40:“He that
receivethyou receivethme, and he that receiveth me receivethhim that sent
me.” Mark 3:14: “And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and
that he might send them forth to preach,….” John20:21: “Thensaid Jesus to
them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I
you.” Finally, John 13:20: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth
whomsoeverI send receivethme; and he that receivethme receivethhim that
sent me.”
God the Father sent Jesus Christ as His Messenger, and Jesus Christsent
messengers(12 Apostles)to Israel. If Israelrejectedthe 12 Apostles, they were
really rejecting Jesus Christ who sent them, and they were rejecting God the
Father who sent Jesus Christ to them in the first place.
After His ascensioninto Heaven, the Lord Jesus Christ sent the Apostle Paul
to be His spokesmanto us Gentiles. Look at two verses. Firstly, Acts 22:21:
“And he saidunto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the
Gentiles.” Now, Acts 26:17:“Delivering thee from the people, and from the
Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,…..” Paulthus wrote in Romans 11:13:
“ForI speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle [sent-one]of the
Gentiles, I magnify mine office:….” And, remember Jesus’words in John
13:20:“Verily, verily, I sayunto you, He that receivethwhomsoeverI send
receivethme; and he that receivethme receivethhim that sentme.” If we
rejectPaul, then we reject God’s messengerto us!
Whenever there were appearancesofGod in the Old Testamenteconomy,
they were Jesus Christ in pre-incarnate forms. It was not Father God, and it
was not the Holy Spirit. First Timothy 6:16: “[Jesus Christ] Who only hath
immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; [God the
Father; verse 13] whom no man hath seen, nor cansee:to whom be honour
and powereverlasting. Amen.” And John 1:18: “No man hath seenGod at
any time, the only begottenSon, which is in the bosomof the Father, he hath
declaredhim.” Colossians 2:9:“Forin him [Christ] dwelleth all the fulness of
the Godheadbodily.” The way we see and hear FatherGod is by paying
attention to Jesus Christ: He is the one Mediator betweenGod and men.
First Timothy 2:3-6: “[3]For this is goodand acceptable in the sight of God
our Saviour; [4] Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the
knowledge ofthe truth. [5] For there is one God, and one mediator between
God and men, the man Christ Jesus;[6] Who gave himself a ransom for all, to
be testified in due time.” As God, Jesus Christ can take Godby the hand. As
Man, He can take man by the hand. He thus joins them togetherthrough His
finished crosswork atCalvary. The barrier of sin is demolished because Jesus
Christ died for our sins. Without God communicating that information
through Jesus Christ, and then Jesus Christ giving that information to Paul,
we would not know it.
Jesus Christ is thus “The Word of God”—the embodiment of the whole
messageGodwants to give to mankind! In 1 John 1:1, Jesus is called“the
Word of life,” meaning God’s entire communication to man can be
summarized as “life.” If we want to see what true life is really like, how God
designedit to function for His glory, we look to “the Word of life,” the Lord
Jesus Christ! If we want eternal(spiritual) life, we look to the Lord Jesus
Christ! John 14:6: “Jesus saithunto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life:
no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
SUPPLEMENTAL#1:THE CHIEF SPEAKER
To better reinforce in our minds what the title “The Word of God” is actually
conveying as pertaining to Jesus Christ, turn to Acts chapter 14: “[9]The
same heard Paul speak:who stedfastlybeholding him, and perceiving that he
had faith to be healed, [10]Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet.
And he leaped and walked. [11]And when the people saw what Paul had
done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speechofLycaonia, The gods
are come down to us in the likeness of men. [12] And they calledBarnabas,
Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker.” Focus on
“the chief speaker” atthe close ofverse 12. In Greek, it is, “ho hegoumenos
tou logon.” As Paul was the “chiefspeaker[logos]”ofthe Paul–Barnabasduo,
so Jesus Christ is the “chiefspeaker” among the Members of the Godhead.
SUPPLEMENTAL#2:THE HOLY BIBLE
“The word of God” is also a title of the Holy Bible. Hebrews 4:12, for
example: “Forthe word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any
twoedgedsword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of souland spirit, and
of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the
heart.” In Scripture, we find the communication from God. The only way to
know the Living Word of God (Jesus Christ) is through the Written Word of
God (Holy Scripture). While far beyond the scope ofthis study, there is a very
close affinity betweenthe Living Word and the Written Word. Both are
necessaryto learn everything the Godheadhas to tell us.

Jesus was the word of god

  • 1. JESUS WAS THE WORD OF GOD EDITED BY GLENN PEASE Revelation19:1313He is dressedin a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Wordof God. BIBLEHUB RESOURCES The Word of God D. Thomas Revelation19:13 And he was clothed with a clothing dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. The Word of God. The infinite Fatherhas spokentwo greatwords to his intelligent family. One word is nature. "The heavens declare his glory," etc. The other word is Christ. He is the Logos. The latter word is specially addressedto fallen humanity, and is a soul-redeeming word. In relation to this Word the following things may be predicated. He is - I. THE WORD OF ABSOLUTE INFALLIBILITY. Conventionally, men call the Scriptures the Word of God. Mere traditional believers asserttheir infallibility. The best, however, that can be said concerning that book is that it
  • 2. contains the Word of God. It is not the Divine jewel, but the human chest. Christ is the Word itself, absolutely true, the Bible. He is the Word. By him every word, whether oral or written, written in whateverform, language, style, or book, is to be tested, whether true or false. "No man hath seenthe Father at any time:" nor Moses, orthe prophets, or the evangelists, but "the only begottenSon, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath revealedhim." Let us, therefore, rejectall words, wherever we find them, if they agree not with the spirit, character, and aim of Christ. II. THE WORD OF EXHAUSTLESS SIGNIFICANCE. There are faculties and possibilities in him, ideas, purposes, and susceptibilities in him that will take ages upon ages without end fully to develop. "In him dwells all the fulness of God." In this he meets the law of mind, which bids it ever to search after the new and the fresh. III. THE WORD OF ALMIGHTY POWER. The characterof a word is determined by the characterof the mind that utters it. Weak minds utter weak words;strong minds, vigorous words. The words of some are as empty as the wind; others are as vigorous as electricity; they shatterthe mountains and shake the globe. Christ, as the Word, is Almighty. He has not only created Christendom, but by him were "all things created." IV. THE WORD OF UNIVERSAL INTERPRETABILITY. Even the written words that make up what we call the Bible are frequently uninterpretable. Hence their renderings and meanings are constantly fluctuating, and often contradictive. But here is a word that stands forever - "the same yesterday, and today, and forever." This Word is a life. A life a child caninterpret; and the greaterthe life of a man, the more generous, truthful, loving he is, the more readily a child can read and understand him. Hence no life is so interpretable as Christ's life. - D.T.
  • 3. STUDYLIGHT RESOURCES Adam Clarke Commentary He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood - To show that he was just come from recent slaughter. The description is takenfrom Isaiah63:2, Isaiah 63:3, where Judas Maccabeus,orsome other conqueror, is described. The Word of God - Written in the Targum, and in other Jewishwritings, ‫ייד‬ a naemsyawla yeht hcihw yb ";havoheJ fo drow eht" ,ayiad aremiem ‫מימרא‬ person, and not a word spoken. See the notes on John 1:1, etc. Albert Barnes'Notes onthe Whole Bible And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood - Red, as if dipped in blood - emblem of slaughter. The original of this image is probably Isaiah63:2-3. See the notes on that passage. And his name is calledThe Word of God - The name which in Revelation 19:12, it is said that no one knew but he himself. This name is Ὁ λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ Ho logos touTheouor “the Logos ofGod.” That is, this is his unique name; a name which belongs only to him, and which distinguishes him from all other beings. The name “Logos,”as applicable to the Son of God, and expressive of his nature, is found in the New Testamentonly in the writings of John, and is used by him to denote the higher or divine nature of the Saviour. In regard to its meaning, and the reasonwhy it is applied to him, see the notes on John 1:1. The readeralso may consult, with greatadvantage, an article by Prof. Stuart in the Bibliotheca Sacra, vol. vii. pp. 16-31. The following may be some of the reasons why it is said Revelation19:12 that no one understands this but he himself: (1)No one but he can understand its full import, as it implies so high a knowledge ofthe nature of the Deity;
  • 4. (2)no one but he can understand the relation which it supposes in regard to God, or the relation of the Son to the Father; (3)no one but he can understand what is implied in it, regardedas the method in which God reveals himself to his creatures onearth; (4)no one but he can understand what is implied in it in respectto the manner in which God makes himself knownto other worlds. It may be added, as a further illustration of this, that none of the attempts made to explain it have left the matter so that there are no questions unsolved which one would be glad to ask. John Gill's Exposition of the Whole Bible And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood,.... Either in his own, by which he became the Saviour of his church and people; or else in the blood of his saints, he now comes to avenge;or rather in the blood of his enemies, with which he appears as stained, before the battle is fought, the victory being sure, and their slaughterunavoidable: the metaphor is takenfrom persons treading in a winepress, whose garments are stained with blood of grapes;see Revelation19:15. Here may be also an allusion to the Roman general's vesture, which was sometimes purple or scarlet, in which he fought, as did LucullusF19. And his name is calledthe Word of God; the name of Christ, often used by John in his Gospel, epistles, andin this book, John 1:1 1 John 1:1. Of the signification, reason, and import of this name; see Gill on John 1:1. The reasonwhy he is calledby it here may be partly to express his greatness, glory, and majesty, this being a name which principally belongs to him, is a person, as the Creatorof all things, and as previous to his incarnation; and partly because all the promises of God in his word, and which are all yea, and amen in Christ, will be now shortly fulfilled. Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible
  • 5. vesture dipped in blood — Isaiah 63:2 is alluded to here, and in Revelation 19:15, end. There the blood is not His own, but that of His foes. So here the blood on His “vesture,” reminding us of His own blood shed for even the ungodly who trample on it, is a premonition of the shedding of their blood in righteous retribution. He sheds the blood, not of the godly, as the harlot and beastdid, but of the blood-stained ungodly, including them both. The Word of God — who made the world, is He also who under the same characterand attributes shall make it anew. His title, Son of God, is applicable in a lowersense, also to His people;but “the Word of God” indicates His incommunicable Godhead, joined to His manhood, which He shall then manifest in glory. “The Bride does not fear the Bridegroom;her love castethout fear. She welcomes Him; she cannot be happy but at His side. The Lamb [Revelation19:9, the aspectof Christ to His people at His coming] is the symbol of Christ in His gentleness. Who would be afraid of a lamb? Even a little child, instead of being scared, desires to caress it. There is nothing to make us afraid of God but sin, and Jesus is the Lamb of God that taketh awaythe sin of the world. What a fearful contrastis the aspectwhich He will weartowards His enemies! Not as the Bridegroomand the Lamb, but as the [avenging] judge and warrior stainedin the blood of His enemies.” Robertson's WordPictures in the New Testament Arrayed (περιβεβλημενος — peribeblēmenos). Perfectpassive participle of περιβαλλω — periballō to clothe, often in this book. In a garment (ιματιον— himation). Accusative case afterthe passive participle περιβεβλημενος — peribeblēmenos (ρεραντισμενον — rerantismenon). Perfectpassive participle of ραντιζω — rantizō in the predicate accusative caseagreeing with ιματιον— himation A Q here read βεβαμμενον— bebammenon (perfect passive participle of βαπτω — baptō to dip). Probably ρεραντισμενον — rerantismenon (sprinkled) is correct, because the picture comes from Isaiah63:3, where Aquila and Symmachus use
  • 6. ραντιζω — rantizō The use of βεβαμμενον— bebammenon (dipped) is a bolder figure and Charles considers it correct. In either case it is the blood of Christ‘s enemies with which his raiment (ιματιον — himation perhaps a χλαμυς — chlamus Matthew 27:28, Matthew 27:31)is sprinkled or dipped as the case maybe, not his own blood on Calvary (Revelation1:5; Revelation 5:9; Revelation7:14; Revelation12:11), but proleptically and prophetically the blood of Christ‘s enemies. αιματι — Haimati can be either locative case with βεβαμμενον— bebammenon (dipped in blood) or instrumental with ρεραντισμενον — rerantismenon (sprinkled with blood). The Word of God (ο Λογος του τεου — ho Logos tou theou). Some scholars hold this addition inconsistentwith Revelation19:12, but it may be merely the explanation of the secretname or still another name besides that known only to himself. The personal use of the Logos applied to Christ occurs only in the Johannine writings unless that is the idea in Hebrews 4:12. In John 1:1, John 1:14 it is merely ο Λογος — ho Logos (the Word), in 1 John 1:1 ο Λογος της ζωης — ho Logos tēs zōēs (the Word of Life), while here it is ο Λογος του τεου — ho Logos tou theou (the Word of God), one of the strongestarguments for identity of authorship. The idiom here is one common in Luke and Paul for the teaching of Christ (Luke 5:1; Luke 8:11, etc.; 1 Corinthians 14:36;2 Corinthians 2:17, etc.). Jesus is himself the final and perfect revelationof God to men (Hebrews 1:1.). Vincent's Word Studies Dipped ( βεβαμμένον) The readings differ; some giving ῥεραντισμένον sprinkledothers περιρεραμμένονsprinkledround. Rev., sprinkled. Compare Isaiah63:2, Isaiah 63:3. The Word of God ( ὁ Λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ )
  • 7. This name for our Lord is found in the New Testamentonly in the writings of John. It is one of the links which connects Revelationwith John's other writings. Compare John 1:1-14; 1 John 1:1. Some object to this on the ground that, in the Gospelof John, the term is used absolutely, the Word, whereas here it is qualified, the Word of God, which the Evangelistnowhere employs, and in 1 John 1:1, the Word of life. But, as Alford observes:“It may be left to any fair-judging readerto decide whether it be not a far greaterargument for identity that the remarkable designation ὁ Λόγος theWord is used, than for diversity, that, on the solemn occasiondescribedin the Apocalypse, the hitherto unheard adjunct of God is added.” The idea of God which is representedhere, underlies the absolute term the Word in John 1:1. It is further urged that in the Gospel ὁ Λόγος is applied to the prehistoric Christ, while in this passageit is applied to the historic Christ. But the name of the historic Christ is that referred to in Revelation19:12, not in Revelation19:13. It is the name “which no one knowethbut He Himself,” expressing the characterof His whole redeeming work. The name in Revelation19:13is that which belongs originally and essentiallyto Him. Wesley's ExplanatoryNotes And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is calledThe Word of God. And he is clothed in a vesture dipped in blood — The blood of the enemies he hath already conquered. Isaiah 63:1, etc. Abbott's Illustrated New Testament A vesture dipped in blood; a common emblem of war. It is to denote, in this instance, the terrible destruction with which he should visit his enemies,--as is expresseddistinctly Revelation19:17-21. John Trapp Complete Commentary
  • 8. 13 And he was clothedwith a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. Ver. 13. Dipped in blood] In the blood of his enemies, as a victor returning from a huge slaughter. Caesaris said to have takenprisoner one million of men, and to have slain as many; Mahomet I (emperor of the Turks), to have been the death of 800,000 men; Seanderbeg, to have slain 800 Turks with his own hand. But our Conqueror shall outdo all these;when he shall tread them in his anger, and trample them in his fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon his garments, and he will stain all his raiment, Isaiah 63:3. The word of God] John 1:1; John 1:7. Hereby it appears that this was John the Evangelistthat wrote this book. Idiotismus Ioannis. (Pareus.) Matthew Poole's EnglishAnnotations on the Holy Bible And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood; either to denote that he was he who redeemedus by his blood; or rather, to signify that he was now coming forth to shed the blood of his enemies, both in vindication of his own honour and glory, or of his people; in which notion it also agrees with Isaiah’s vision of him, Isaiah 63:1-3:Their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment. And his name is calledThe Word of God: See Poole on"John 1:1". He is also calledthe Word, Revelation1:2, a name given him hardly by any exceptthis apostle. Justin Edwards' Family Bible New Testament
  • 9. He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood; compare Isaiah 63:1-3, and notes. His name is-The Word of God; applied here, as in John 1:1, to the second person of the god-head. Cambridge Greek Testamentfor Schools andColleges 13. βεβαμμένον. See crit. note. There is nothing to suggesteitherβεβαμμένον, ῥεραντισμένον, or ῥεραμμένονin Isaiah63:1; Isaiah63:3, LXX.: the Hebrew would suggestboth, “Theodotion” atany rate the latter: whichever be the original reading the other is probably an additional reference to Isaiah:for until there was a system of something like chapters and verses, marginal or interlinear quotations had to serve the purpose now served by marginal references. In Isaiahthe Conqueroris describedas stained with the blood of His enemies. If this decides the primary meaning here, it is legitimate for the Christian to remember, in interpreting both passages, that the waythat Christ overcomes His enemies is by shedding, not their blood, but His own. Moreover in Isaiah the Redeemerand champion of Israel is the Father rather than Christ: so that, as the figure has certainly receivedsome change in its application, it is unobjectionable to suppose a direct reference to the Passion. If so, as this passageobviouslyrefers back to the vision of the Man Child, it would be impossible to regardthat vision as purely Jewish. ὁ Λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ. The only place in Scripture (unless Hebrews 4:12 is to be so interpreted, which is not probable) where this exactphrase is used of the personalWord, the Son of God. But of course the use of “the Word” in St John 1:1 is the same in principle and meaning. Coffman's Commentaries on the Bible And he is arrayed in a garment sprinkled with blood: and his name is called the Word of God. Garment sprinkled with blood ... The imagery of this is thought to reflectthe figure of the winepress in Isaiah63, but there the blood was the blood of the
  • 10. Lord's enemies. As Caird pointed out, "The Rider's garment is already soakedin blood before the battle begins."[41]Some point out that Christ has already won many victories before the one pointed out here; but we seemto be compelled to seek the meaning symbolized by the bloodstains in that eternal victory of the Cross, where the enabling victory of all that came afterwards was achieved. "His garment is dipped in blood because Christ shed his blood for mankind."[42] And his name is calledthe Word of God ... "This is a title of Christ used only by the apostle John (John 1:1,14,1 John1:1,5:7)."[43]The apostle is thus linked with all three writings. [41] G. B. Caird, The Revelationof St. John the Divine (New York: Harper and Row, 1966), p. 242. [42] E. M. Zerr, op. cit., p. 340. [43] Charles CaldwellRyrie, op. cit., p. 112. Whedon's Commentary on the Bible 13. A vesture dipped in blood—The allusion may be to Isaiah 63:1-2, where a warrior comes from Bozrah, with garments “dyed,” that is, “sprinkled,” with blood. But here the word dipt, βεβαμμενον, suggests thatthere may be an allusion to his own atoning blood. This view lies in close connexionwith his gospelname next given, and with the white raiment of the armies, next verse. His name—Known to the world as his gospelname. Word of God—The incarnate expressionto men of the divine nature. Hence a name of truth, of revelation, and of salvation. And so our John says in his Gospel, Revelation1:14, “The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us… full of grace and truth.” The armies— Namely, of martyred, disembodied spirits; the souls once under the altar, Revelation6:9-11; then, on Mount Zion, with the Lamb, Revelation 14:1-5 : next, here; and finally, as the souls of Revelation20:4.
  • 11. Fine linen—The righteousness ofthe saints, Revelation19:18. White—The leader is arrayed in red; the armies are in white. They are whitened by his crimson. They bear no carnal armour; they are the white warriors for purity and peace. Foy E. Wallace'sCommentaryon the Book of Revelation In verse thirteen, the Rider was calledby a third name --The Word of God. The Word was not a name without significance. The same Johnof the apocalypse referredto the Sonof God as the Word in the gospelofJohn l:1- 14. The word is the vehicle of conveying thoughts--and Jesus Christ was the full and complete expressionof God's will to man; the beginning and the end of all revelation;hence, his title The Word. The name The Word Of God, signifies the armament of the warfare in which he was in this vision to engage- -it was the conflictof Christianity with heathenism, and the truth was the weaponagainstall error. Expository Notes ofDr. Thomas Constable The blood on His robe is probably the blood of his enemies, in view of the context (cf. Isaiah63:2-3). John did not see Christ as the redeemerin this vision but as the warrior and judge. As many of the symbols in this passage, this one is also proleptic, anticipating His victory. The "Word of God" is a familiar title signifying that He is the expressionof God"s mind and heart ( Isaiah49:2; John 1:1; John 1:14; cf. 1 John 1:1; Hebrews 1:1). This "word" includes prophecies about God"s purposes ( Revelation19:9; Revelation1:2; Revelation17:17). It is the same "word" that brought the worlds into existence as God"s active agent( John 1:3; cf. Genesis 1:3; Genesis 1:6; Genesis 1:9; Psalm33:6; Hebrews 4:12). As a title in Revelation, "Wordof God" emphasizes the authoritative declarationthat results in the destruction of God"s enemies rather than the self-revelationof God. [Note: Mounce, p345.]
  • 12. Schaff's Popular Commentary on the New Testament Revelation19:13. And he is arrayed in a garment sprinkled with blood, and his name is calledThe Word of God. The idea is takenfrom Isaiah 63:2-3, and is therefore that of a garment sprinkled not with the Warrior’s own blood, but with the blood of His enemies. ‘Is called,’i.e is, and has been always, called. The resemblance to John 1:1 and 1 John 1:1 need not be enlarged on. The Expositor's Greek Testament Revelation19:13. “Dipped in blood” (i.e., the blood of his foes):from the “crimsonedgarments” of Yahveh in Isaiah 63.;cf. also Revelation19:15 with “I have trodden the wine-press.… Yea, I trod them in mine anger( κατεπάτησα αὐτοὺς ἐν θυμῷ μου), and trampled them in my fury,” etc. Add Targ. Palest, onGenesis 49:11, “How beauteous is the King Messiah!Binding his loins and going forth to war againstthem that hate him, he will slay kings with princes, and make the rivers red with the blood of their slain, and his hills white with the fat of their mighty ones, his garments will be dipped in blood, and he himself like the juice of the wine-press.” The secretname denotes his superiority to all appeals;it indicates that the awful and punitive vigour of his enterprise made him impervious to the invocations of men. This is no Logos who dwells among men to give light and life; it is a stern, militant, figure of vengeance attacking the rebellious. Hence his name is mysterious; for “the identity, or at leastthe close connectionbetweena thing and its name, not only makes the utterance of a holy name an invocationwhich insures the actualpresence of the deity invoked, it also makes the holy name too sacred for common use or even for use at all” (Jevons’Introd. Hist. Relig. 361). The passagereflects certainphases oflater messianic belief in Judaism, which had been tinged by the Babylonian myth of Marduk, Ea’s victorious son, to whom divine authority was entrusted. Marduk’s triumph was explained by Babylonian theologians as causedby the transference to him of the divine Name (so Michael, En. 69:14). 13b may be a Johannine gloss upon the unknown name of Revelation19:12 (cf. Philippians 2:9-10), under the

If the above explanation of the mysterious name be correct, the author’s idea was evidently forgottenor ignoredby some later editor or copyistof the Johannine school, who inserted this gloss in order to clearup the obscure reference, and at the same time to bring forward the transcendentname widely appropriated by that schoolfor Christ in a pacific and religious sense (so nearly all critical editors). In any case the two conceptions ofthe Apocalypse and the Fourth gospelhave little or nothing in common except the word. But the introduction of this apparently illogical sequence between12 and 13 might be justified in part by E. B. D. 94, “I am he that cometh forth, advancing, whose name is unknown; I am Yesterday, and Seerof millions of years is my name”. The application of such titles to Jesus certainly gives the impression that these high, honourable predicates are “not yet joined to his personwith any intrinsic and essentialunity” (Baur); they are rather due to the feeling that “Christ must have a position adequate to the greatexpectations concerning the lastthings, of which he is the chief subject”. But their introduction is due to the semi-Christianisedmessianic conceptions and the divine categories by which the writer is attempting to interpret his experience of Jesus. Backwards and forwards, as pre-existent and future, the redeemeris magnified for the prophet’s consciousness. E.W. Bullinger's Companion Bible Notes dipped = dyed, or stained. Vesture dipped in blood - (Isaiah 63:2 : cf. Revelation19:15, end.) The blood there is not His own, but that of His foes. Here the blood on His "vesture," reminding us of His own blood, shed for even the ungodly who trample on it, prefigures the shedding of their blood in retribution: not that of the godly, as the harlot and beastshed, but of the blood-stained ungodly, including them both. The Word of God - who made the world, is He who, under the same character, shallmake it anew. Son of God is applicable, in a lowersense, also to His people; but "the Word of God" indicates His incommunicable Godhead, which, joined to His manhood, He shall manifest in glory. 'The Bride does not fear the Bridegroom: love castethout fear: she welcomes Him: she cannotbe happy but at His side. Of the eight sacredwriters of the New Testament, Johnis the only one who applies this title to Christ. As the Word He represents and expresses Godin His Being, character, and works. He is "The Word of Life" (1 John 1:1), as being in His Personand ways its living embodiment. He is termed "The Word of God," as perfectly expressing Him in judgment. As the WORD He has personal, independent, eternal existence (John 1:1-2); and as the WORD He is the makerof all things (v. 3). He is the Revealerof God, the ONE Who makes Him known. Our words ought to be the exact expressionof what we are; the words of Christ were the absolute expressionof what He everis (John 8:25). As the WORD He reveals God in His essentialnature as light and love, and as the "only begottenSon" He declares the Father. The first without the secondwould have left a huge blank, for the heart craves for a known and enjoyed relationship. God is our Father. The title here used of Christ has peculiar significance in this connection. It is God Who is here seenroused to action. His very nature demands the judgment of those who on earth madly attempt to thwart His purpose to set His Sonas King on Mount Zion and put into His hands earth's government. Christ, "The Word of God," is the absolute expressionof God in the scene of judgment about to take place. E.M. How deep must that, which is indicated by this name, lie in the unsearchable Godhead? A man's word is not only that which he expresses with his lips, and causes to be heard by the ear, but that also which he has within himself in his mind, and produces in his thoughts. If this internal word did not exist, it could not be brought forth into any form of speechor utterance. If even man's word is thus inward, how profound must be the seatof God's word, beyond any comprehensionof ours, and what emotions should it stir, as often as it is declared, in respectto the creationor to the other works and witnesses of God, God speaks, the Lord testifies, etc. Against him, whose name is the Word of God, all his enemies, and in particular the beast, are but as stubble to the fire. We are not, with De Wette, to understand by the Word of God him "who has revealed the Word of God, and indeed first as doctrine, then as prophecy."Forin that case this name would be appropriated to Christ as the most perfect teacher. But it is againstthe characterof this whole section, in which only a polemicalname suits one that threatens destruction; also againstthe connectionwith what immediately precedes, and againstJohn 1 (Vitringa: Id vero aliennm est ab oratione Johannis, qui τὸ ν λό γον jam ante condita saecula aitfuisse in sinu patris et apud patrem). By the name of the Word of God Christ appears in the writings of John only here, in John 1 of his Gospel, and in the beginning of his first epistle. The compositionof the Apocalypse by St John derives no small support from this, and all attempts have been in vain to set it aside. Some have sought to distinguish betweenthe use of the expressionhere and in the other writings of John, by alleging that here the Logos orWord of God is spokenof, as if there also the Word could be any thing but the Word of God, and as if here that were not indispensable, which is there supplied by the connection. Word of God in the course of time; as if the name itself did not point to a necessityin the divine nature existing even from eternity; as if Christ, because he is the Word of God, and, inasmuch as he is so, must not have been in the beginning with God! Christ is not the Word of God as the one, "who renders the divine will efficient outwardly or upon the earth," but because he is the Word of God he does this also among other things, he throws down the kings of the earth with that same omnipotence by which he originally calledthe earth into existence. John, Lücke conceives, does not callthe "historical Christ" simpliciter the Word, as if the name here did not, preciselyas the name Michael, in ch. 12 , designate Christ in respectto his divine nature, in which alone there was to be found the security for his last victory over an ungodly world. The allegation, besides, thatthe expressionis here "copied, not that originally of John," has been already disproved, by the considerationthat the name of the Word of God here, though used essentiallyin the same significationas in the Gospeland the first epistle of John, is still employed in a quite peculiar and original respect. It would never have occurredto an imitator to serve himself of such an epithet as a hammer, wherewith to break in pieces the rock of the enemies of God's kingdom. That this was by no means an obvious thought is evident from the difficulty it has occasionedto expositors. If Christ is the living Word of God, then all particular words of God must be spokenthrough his mediation, nor can there be any word of God which is not also a testimony of Jesus Christ, nor againa testimony of Christ, which is not a word of God (ch. Revelation1:9, Revelation20:4;John 14:24). PRECEPTAUSTIN RESOURCES Revelation19:13 robe dipped in blood

Jesus wears itproudly; we will be dressedin our white garments— He will be arrayedin His bloody one. The host that will accompanyJesus is proof positive of the effectivenessofHis blood.32 As attractive as this idea may be, it has severalweaknesses:(1) nowhere in Scripture is there indication that Jesus wears His own blood; (2) His blood was spilled at the cross during His First Coming for redemption. This is a picture of His SecondComing which is in judgment and wrath. This is not His own atoning blood which is associatedwith His First Coming (Lev. 14:51; Rev. 1:5‣ ; 5:9‣ ). This is the blood of His enemies from His trampling them in the “winepress ofthe fierceness andwrath of Almighty God” (Isa. 63:3; Luke 19:27;Rev. 14:20‣ ;19:15‣ ).33 SeeBloodStainedGarments. calledthe Word of God Called is κέκληται [keklētai], perfectpassive:having been called. Elsewhere, Johnuses this title to emphasis Jesus as the revelation of God in His incarnation: That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have lookedupon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life— the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternallife which was with the Father and was manifestedto us— that which we have seenand heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowshipwith us; and truly our fellowship is with the Fatherand with His Son Jesus Christ. (1Jn. 1:1-3) The Logos or Word is the expressionofGod’s nature in understandable terms, and whether those terms be mercy or judgment they are both equally the messageofGod.34 This title also emphasizes Jesus’role in creation(John 1:1-3; Eph. 3:9; Col. 1:16; Heb. 1:2; Rev. 3:14‣ )—a keytheme explaining why God has ultimate dominion to retake the earth at His SecondComing (Rev. 3:14‣ ; 4:11‣ ; 10:6‣ ). So all three Persons ofthe Holy Trinity "communicate" either with us or through us, but only Christ gave us an abundance of His ownwords right out of His own mouth directly...as God. He is the Word of God. That's why the Bible, which contains the words He spoke is also calledthe Word of God. There is not one word ever spokenby Jesus Christ that was not the word of God. The devil used the names of God to deceive the whole world into thinking he was God, but the WORD OF GOD could not be used by the devil. The WORD OF GOD is God the Father's only true words that are not mixed with lies of the devil. The WORD OF GOD canonly be found twice in the Old Testament, and these verses are the key to understanding the TRUTH. Jesus became the living Word of God, the word was castdown to the earth and the flesh body of Jesus became it's dwelling place, the Christ was the spiritual body which became one with the flesh body knownas Jesus. • 24. The Bible’s answer The expression“the word of God” usually refers to a divine messageorto a collectionof those messages. (Luke 11:28) In a few places, “The Wordof God” or “the Word” is used as a personaltitle.—Revelation19:13;John 1:14. A divine message. The prophets often stated that the messagestheydelivered were God’s word. For example, Jeremiahintroduced his prophetic messages with the expression“the word of Jehovahcame to me.” (Jeremiah 1:4, 11, 13; 2:1) Before telling Saul that God had chosenhim as king, the prophet Samuel said: “Stand still now, so that I may let you hear the word of God.”—1 Samuel 9:27. A personaltitle. “The Word” also appears in the Bible as a title for Jesus Christ, both as a spirit in heaven and as a human on earth. Considersome reasons forthis conclusion: The Word lived before all other creation. “In the beginning was the Word . . . This one was in the beginning with God.” (John 1:1, 2) Jesus is “the firstborn of all creation. . . He is before all other things.”—Colossians 1:13-15,17. The Word came to earth as a human. “The Word became flesh and resided among us.” (John 1:14) Christ Jesus “emptiedhimself and took a slave’s form and became human.”—Philippians 2:5-7. The Word is God’s Son. After stating that “the Word became flesh,” as quoted above, the apostle John continued: “We had a view of his glory, a glory such as belongs to an only-begotten sonfrom a father.” (John 1:14) John also wrote:“Jesus is God’s Son.”—1 John4:15. The Word possessesgodlike attributes. “The Word was a god,” or “was divine.” (John 1:1; An American Translation)Jesus is “the reflection of God’s glory and the exactrepresentationof his very being.”—Hebrews 1:2, 3. The Word rules as a king. Bible study on Jesus as the Word. Thus far in this series, we've talkedabout Jesus as God, and our Creator. In this article, we talk about Jesus as the Word, and the significance this bears in reference to the working of Jesus in our lives. Jesus is the Word of God As we've discussedin the first two articles, Jesus is the Word. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (Jn. 1:1-3). In Revelation, John sees Jesuscoming on a white horse to wage warwith the enemies of God. "He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God" (Rev. 19:13). • 26. Jesus fights evil with His word. To the church in Pergamum, Jesus referred to Himself as the one who has the two-edgedsword, indicating that His word is the weaponof God (Rev. 2:12; Heb. 4:12). Then in the vision of His war with the beastand the kings of the earth, Jesus defeatedthem with the swordthat comes from His mouth -- The Word of God. "From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty" (Rev. 19:15). "And the rest were killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him who saton the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh" (Rev. 19:21). As the Word, Jesus is the Powerof God The word of the cross is the powerof God. Therefore, whenwe preachChrist, we are preaching the power of God. "Forthe word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being savedit is the powerof God" (1 Cor. 1:18). "But we preachChrist crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, but to those who are the called, both Jews andGreeks, Christthe powerof God . . ." (1 Cor. 1:23-24). Paul's statements are in perfect harmony with the fact that the gospelis the powerof God unto salvation. "ForI am not ashamedof the gospel, for it is the powerof God for salvation to everyone who believes . . ." (Rom. 1:16). Since Jesus is the Word of God, He is the power of God for salvation(Rev. 19:13;1 Cor. 1:18, 24).

Now the Godof peace . . . equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ. . . (Heb. 13:20-21). ". . . the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe" (1 Th. 2:13). Jesus is the powerof God, who works in us through the Word of God. As the Word, Jesus is the Wisdom of God Paul also tells us that Jesus is the wisdom of God. "But we preachChrist crucified . . . the wisdom of God" (1 Cor. 1:23-24). "But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God . . ." (1 Cor. 1:30). Therefore Paul says: All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are in Christ (Col. 2:3). The word of Christ richly dwells in us, with all wisdom (Col. 3:16). As the Word, Jesus is the Truth The word of God is truth (Jn. 17:17). So then, as the Word, Jesus is the truth. "And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begottenfrom the Father, full of grace and truth" (Jn. 1:14). Therefore, Jesus saidofHimself that He's the truth.

Verse 13.And He was clothed with a garment dipped in blood, and His name is calledthe Word of God, signifies the Divine truth in its ultimate sense, orthe Word in the letter, to which violence has been offered. By a garment is signified truth clothing good(n. 166, 212, 328);and when concerning the Word, it signifies the Word in the sense of the letter; for this is like a garment, in which its spiritual and celestialsensesare clothed. By "the
  • 29. blood" is signified violence offered to the Lord‘s Divine and to the Word (n. 327, 684). The reasonthat this is signified is that the Lord’s Divine truth in the Word is signified by blood (n. 379, 653);wherefore by "shedding blood" is signified to offer violence to the Lord‘s Divine and to the Word. By "the Word of God" is signified here the Word in the sense of the letter; for violence has been offered to this, but not to the Word in the spiritual sense, because this sense has not been known; and if it had been known, violence would have been offered to it also. Wherefore that sense was not revealeduntil after the Last Judgment was accomplished, andthe New Church was to be instituted by the Lord. Nor is it revealedto anyone at this day, except to him who is in Divine truths from the Lord; see The Doctrine of the New Jerusalemconcerning the SacredScripture (Sacredn. 26). That violence has been offeredto the Lord’s Divine and to the Word, is plainly manifest from the Roman Catholic religious persuasion, and from the religious persuasionof the Reformedconcerning faith alone. The RomanCatholic religious persuasiongives forth that the Lord‘s Human is not Divine, wherefore they have transferred all things of the Lord to themselves:also that the Word is to be interpreted only by them; yet the interpretation by them is everywhere contrary to the Divine truth of the Word, as was shown in the explanation of the preceding chapter 18. It is manifest from this, that violence is offeredto the Word by that religious persuasion. In like manner by the religious persuasionof the Reformed concerning faith alone. Neither does this make the Lord’s Human Divine, and it founds theologyupon a single saying of Paul falsely understood; and it therefore makes nothing of all the things which the Lord taught concerning love and charity and concerning goodworks;which are yet so prominent that everyone, if he only has eyes, cansee. The like was done with the Word by the Jews. Theirreligious persuasionwas, that the Word was written for no others but themselves, and thus that no others are meant therein; and that the Messiahwho was to come would exalt them above all in the whole world: by which and many other things they falsified and adulterated all things of the Word. This is meant by these words in Isaiah:-- Who is this that cometh from Edom, having sprinkled garments from Bozrah? wherefore art Thou red as to Thy garment, and Thy garments as of

By "garments" here also the Divine truths of the Word are signified: by "Edom" is signified red, here red from blood. Hence it is manifest that by "clothedwith a garment dipped in blood, and His name is calledthe Word of God," is signified the Divine truth in the ultimate sense, orthe Word in the letter, to which violence has been offered. http://www.biblemeanings.info/Bible/Revelation/ch19,v13-m.htm HIS NAME IS CALLED THE WORD OF GOD Spreading The Word Without Saying A Word Ministry By: Chico and Debbie Jimenez John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and THE WORD WAS GOD. {JESUS IS GOD IN THE FLESH!!!} John 1:14 And THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begottenof the Father,) full of grace and truth. {JESUS;GOD IN THE FLESH, DWELT/LIVED HERE ON EARTH IN THE FORM OF A MAN.} Revelation19:13 And He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and HIS NAME IS CALLED “THE WORD OF GOD“. {JESUS IS THE SPOKEN AND WRITTEN WORD OF GOD!!!} 2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:2 Timothy 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all goodworks. {THE ENTIRE HOLY KING JAMES VERSION OF THE BIBLE; IS THE WRITTEN “WORDOF GOD” AND ARE THE WORDS OF JESUS CHRIST}.

  • 34. In the King James Bible, when Word is capitalized, it refers to Jesus Christ. We see Jesus Christcalledthe Word seventimes in the Bible: John 1:1 (3 times), 14; 1 John 1:1 ; 5:7 ; Revelation19:13 . However, there are many times when the Bible is referred to as the word of God (with a lowercase "w"). Sometimes, we make a distinction betweenthe living Word of God and the written word of God. However, even this is not easysince the written word is also alive (Hebrews 4:12 ). The two are sometimes hard to separate since both the Word and the word of God are expressions ofHis person. Perhaps you are asking why people tend to capitalize Word when referring to the Bible even though this is not done in scripture. I think it is a matter of respectfor the Bible. In the same manner, many people (myself included) tend to capitalize pronouns referring to God. However, this is not the practice of the King James Bible. Certainly, we are not denying scripture to do this. We are just following conventions of grammar with which we are comfortable. As to the Bible being the word of God, here are some references: The word of God (Psalm 119:11 ,89,105,133,140,160) Word of the Lord (Psalm 18:30 ; 33:4 ,6) Word of God (Proverbs 30:5 ; 1 Thessalonains 2:13 ; 2 Timothy 2:9 ; Hebrews 4:12

  • 36. Word of His power (Hebrews 1:3 ) Word of righteousness(Hebrews 5:13 ) Word of exhortation (Hebrews 13:22 ) The engraftedword (James 1:21 ) David Reagan WHY IS JESUS CHRIST CALLED “THE WORD OF GOD?” by Shawn Brasseaux This epithet is exclusive to the Apostle John’s writings—the Book ofJohn, the Book of1 John, and the Book ofthe Revelation. It, or its abbreviated variant “The Word,” appears seventimes in the whole Bible canon. John’s Gospel Recordis designedto underscore Jesus Christ’s Deity. (Compare the openings of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. John 1:1-4 is unique to John; Matthew, Mark, and Luke all begin their accounts with events relating to Christ’s humanity.) It is thus not surprising that John’s specialphrase, “the Word of God,” is intended to accentuate Christ’s Deity: John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:14: “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begottenof the Father,)full of grace and truth.”
  • 37. 1 John 1:1: “Thatwhich was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seenwith our eyes, which we have lookedupon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;….” 1 John 5:7: “Forthere are three that bear recordin heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” Revelation19:13:“And he was clothedwith a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.” The term “word” carries the idea of communication. In Greek, it is logos. Depending on the context, logos canbe rendered as—“preaching,” “something said,” “utterance,” “reason,” “saying,” “speech,” “talk,” “account,” andso on. Think of our relatedEnglish words logic and logo. A “logo,” forexample, is a symbol or designthat represents a group, idea, line of products, and so on. This symbol conveys a message. The Greek wordis the same line of thought. According to Scripture, there are three Members/Persons in the Godhead or Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Ghost (Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14;1 John 5:7). Unless they make themselves known in a specialway, we cannot see them with our human eyes. The Personof Jesus Christ(God the Son) is a representative of the Godhead. Turn to John 14:6-9: “[6] Jesus saithunto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. [7] If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also:and from henceforth ye know him, and have seenhim. [8] Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. [9] Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seenme hath seenthe Father; and how sayestthou then, Shew us the Father?” What the Fatherand the Holy Spirit want us to see and know, Jesus Christ reveals it to us so we can see and know. If we want to see how God lives, all we have to do is read the Four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). This is how God conductedHis own life in His own human flesh. Even today, we can see Godliving His life in human flesh. This is the Church the Body of Christ (all present-day believers in Jesus Christ). It is called“the Body of Christ”
  • 38. because it is His life being manifestedthrough Christians—we are His arms, His legs, His hands, His feet, and His voice. We accuratelyportray His life as we walk daily in faith in His Word to us (more on this later). Father God sentJesus Christ as His spokesmanto the nation Israel. For example, John 7:16: “Jesus answeredthem, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.” God the Fatherhad given some information to Jesus Christ, so Jesus Christ could then relay it to Israel. Jesus is the Spokesmanof the Godhead. He is “The Word of God” in this sense. Now, read Matthew 15:24:“But he answeredand said, I am not sentbut unto the lostsheep of the house of Israel.” Hebrews 3:1: “Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, considerthe Apostle [sent-one] and High Priestof our profession, Christ Jesus;….” WhenJesus Christ left Earth and ascendedback into Heaven, He sent His 12 Apostles to be His spokesmento Israel. They were to repeat what He taught them. Matthew chapter 10: “[5]These twelve Jesus sentforth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: [6] But go rather to the lost sheepof the house of Israel…. [16]Behold, I send you forth as sheepin the midst of wolves:be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” And verse 40:“He that receivethyou receivethme, and he that receiveth me receivethhim that sent me.” Mark 3:14: “And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,….” John20:21: “Thensaid Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.” Finally, John 13:20: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoeverI send receivethme; and he that receivethme receivethhim that sent me.” God the Father sent Jesus Christ as His Messenger, and Jesus Christsent messengers(12 Apostles)to Israel. If Israelrejectedthe 12 Apostles, they were really rejecting Jesus Christ who sent them, and they were rejecting God the Father who sent Jesus Christ to them in the first place. After His ascensioninto Heaven, the Lord Jesus Christ sent the Apostle Paul to be His spokesmanto us Gentiles. Look at two verses. Firstly, Acts 22:21:
  • 39. “And he saidunto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.” Now, Acts 26:17:“Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,…..” Paulthus wrote in Romans 11:13: “ForI speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle [sent-one]of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:….” And, remember Jesus’words in John 13:20:“Verily, verily, I sayunto you, He that receivethwhomsoeverI send receivethme; and he that receivethme receivethhim that sentme.” If we rejectPaul, then we reject God’s messengerto us! Whenever there were appearancesofGod in the Old Testamenteconomy, they were Jesus Christ in pre-incarnate forms. It was not Father God, and it was not the Holy Spirit. First Timothy 6:16: “[Jesus Christ] Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; [God the Father; verse 13] whom no man hath seen, nor cansee:to whom be honour and powereverlasting. Amen.” And John 1:18: “No man hath seenGod at any time, the only begottenSon, which is in the bosomof the Father, he hath declaredhim.” Colossians 2:9:“Forin him [Christ] dwelleth all the fulness of the Godheadbodily.” The way we see and hear FatherGod is by paying attention to Jesus Christ: He is the one Mediator betweenGod and men. First Timothy 2:3-6: “[3]For this is goodand acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; [4] Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge ofthe truth. [5] For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;[6] Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.” As God, Jesus Christ can take Godby the hand. As Man, He can take man by the hand. He thus joins them togetherthrough His finished crosswork atCalvary. The barrier of sin is demolished because Jesus Christ died for our sins. Without God communicating that information through Jesus Christ, and then Jesus Christ giving that information to Paul, we would not know it. Jesus Christ is thus “The Word of God”—the embodiment of the whole messageGodwants to give to mankind! In 1 John 1:1, Jesus is called“the Word of life,” meaning God’s entire communication to man can be summarized as “life.” If we want to see what true life is really like, how God designedit to function for His glory, we look to “the Word of life,” the Lord
  • 40. Jesus Christ! If we want eternal(spiritual) life, we look to the Lord Jesus Christ! John 14:6: “Jesus saithunto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” SUPPLEMENTAL#1:THE CHIEF SPEAKER To better reinforce in our minds what the title “The Word of God” is actually conveying as pertaining to Jesus Christ, turn to Acts chapter 14: “[9]The same heard Paul speak:who stedfastlybeholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed, [10]Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked. [11]And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speechofLycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men. [12] And they calledBarnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker.” Focus on “the chief speaker” atthe close ofverse 12. In Greek, it is, “ho hegoumenos tou logon.” As Paul was the “chiefspeaker[logos]”ofthe Paul–Barnabasduo, so Jesus Christ is the “chiefspeaker” among the Members of the Godhead. SUPPLEMENTAL#2:THE HOLY BIBLE “The word of God” is also a title of the Holy Bible. Hebrews 4:12, for example: “Forthe word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedgedsword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of souland spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” In Scripture, we find the communication from God. The only way to know the Living Word of God (Jesus Christ) is through the Written Word of God (Holy Scripture). While far beyond the scope ofthis study, there is a very close affinity betweenthe Living Word and the Written Word. Both are necessaryto learn everything the Godheadhas to tell us. https://forwhatsaiththescriptures.org/2018/04/23/jesus-christ-the-word-of-god/
