2. Science
LS1: Classify organisms into the
currently recognized kingdoms
according to characteristics that they
share. Be familiar with organisms
from each kingdom.
LS2: Recognize that all organisms
are composed of cells, and that
many organisms are single-celled
(unicellular), e.g., bacteria, yeast. In
these single-celled organisms, one
cell must carry out all of the basic
functions of life.
SIS4: Construct a reasoned
argument and respond appropriately
to critical comments and questions.
Math
8.EE 3, 4: Expressions &
Equations: Work with radicals and
integer exponents
8.EE .5: Understand the
connections between proportional
relationships, lines, and linear
equations
8F.3: Functions: Define, evaluate
and compare functions
3. Setting Up an
Account
Students don’t need to have
an email to join.

Rose/Science; Gina/Math = Standards & Goals
Rose – Classify organisms into kingdoms and be familiar with organism from each kingdom; Recognize that many organisms are single-celled, such as bacteria and yeast, and a general Scientific inquiry skill of “constructing a reasoned argument and responding to critical comments and questions.”
21st century ideals using media and technology skills to promote the 4 C’s: critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity.

Gina Teachers create ‘groups’, invite students to join by giving them a group ‘code’. Parents can see student work by joining w/ a separate code
Rose Home Page. Give rundown of how we will present – groups/features/ tabs at top
Gina The note feature allows you to send notes to students.
Rose – You can use the Alert Feature to quickly remind students of a test, field trip, or item they need to bring to class.
Gina An assignment w/ a link. Convert whale migration from miles to km
Gina Here is the link where students have to choose an observation point and post an interesting fact.
Gina Turned in assignment w/ a T comment
Rose – An assignment with a link showing students how to access the marine census in Google Earth. Marine Census is a 10-yr international effort enlisting some 2,700 scientists from around the globe - most comprehensive inventory of known marine life ever compiled and cataloged
30 million records as of January 2011 and counting. Microbes to whales described more than1, 200 new marine species, with another 5,000 or more in the pipeline
Link with Math and Science. They used Google Earth one day to apply math concept of scientific notation, and then the next to look at examples of newly discovered organisms and kingdom classification strategies.
Here is an example of one of the more than1, 200 new marine species to date (another 5,000 or more in the pipeline) Microbes to whales
Rose – Student asked to describe 2 of the newly discovered organisms and explain in which kingdom they would classify the organism. File/Likk library
Rose
Another example of our Math/Science integration. This is a science assignment in which students are asked to watch two videos on the Archae kingdom, a type of bacteria.
Rose – Here is a students blog describing how they would go about classifying new life they discovered (characteristics considered, etc).
Gina –Math connection. Assignment w/ video link on bacteria and attached document the student will complete and submit online. Click on turned in to grade.
Gina In this assignment students plot bacteria growth rate and record data in S N on worksheet
Rose – Students are able to attach files (such as this “Tagxedo” as student completed). And you can see the “turn in assignment” ???
Rose – This is a Prezi that I (as the role of student) made and posted a link to embed. I can also place in my backpack.
Rose – This is a dialogue between myself and a student, but students can respond to each other as well.
Gina In a students backpack are resources, links, tools and completed homework.
Rose - Poll as an in-class “activator”
Gina – 2-step poll to assess use of S N #1 link to deepest point in ocean #2 respond in S N
Gina Here is the link.
Rose – Edmodo offers its own quiz maker, with a variety of question format options (M/C, T/F, Fill in the blank). You can program in the answers for M/C type questions, and then manually correct the fill in the blank and short answer. It will compute the total grade. This is great as in informal assessment tool, or mini quiz.
Gina Snapshot allows you to give a 4 question assessment on any Math or ELA standard-it is graded automatically.
Gina What the student sees.
Gina. 3 ways to view snapshot progress. Focus: Stnd description & overviews of class (+free resources on stnd) Standards: diff description
.
Gina A turned in assignment that has been graded and commented on.
Gina A group view of assignment status - Clocks
Gina Easy access to a groups progress. All assignments and grades posted
Rose Gone are the days of stickers, as you can give a badge as a reward. For example, good citizen, good question, hard worker, student of the month (bottom left)
Rose – This is a top tag/library where the teacher can place links/websites/power points, etc for students to use as resources for assignments.
Rose – Here is an example of some items in the library for my “GINA” class. You can even attach google drive documents.
Rose – You can organize your library by units and topics
Gina – Under Notifications is a listing of submitted work and comments.
Gina Your account options.
Rose – This tag offers resources for teachers such as recommended sites, lesson plan ideas, that you can tailor to your grade and subject. Many of these are free.
Rose – This is located on the right side of the home page. It has a store for buying apps, an apps manager (filter by group) and launcher and a planner (or calendar)
Rose – I have used the CK-12 App to produce online quizzes for students, in place of snapshot.
