The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the King Charles Spaniel are
often mistaken to be one and the same breed. But this is far from
the truth! These are entirely different breeds with distinct
standards, characteristics and identities although it must be said
that both breeds share the same coat colours. The distinction
between the two breeds is then important not only for
appropriate care but for pet insurance purposes, too.
Keep in mind that the coverage, clauses and costs of dog
insurance policies will be based on the common health problems, behavioural issues, and other breed
characteristics. Many insurance companies may offer one-size-fits-all coverage for pets but owners are
well advised to avoid purchasing these policies. With that being said, here are a few key characteristics for
each breed that must be considered for pet insurance purposes.

2. Charles II of England for whom the breed was named. Today, it is
still a favourite among British royalty as well as with non-royalty.
The breed is characterized by a domed head, large wide-open
nostrils, and slightly undershot bite. The feet are well padded,

Examples include cataracts, keratitis, mitral valve disease, patent ductus arteriosus, hanging tongue,
diabetes mellitus, and hydrocephalus.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Affectionately known as Cavies, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed is descended from the King Charles
Spaniel. In the late 1600s, the latter breed was interbred with pugs although the modern-day Cavies are
the product of American breeders. The pet insurance policies for the breed are also affected by the dog’s
age, physical condition and other factors.
Cavies have slightly rounded heads with full muzzles tapering into a shallow stop. The teeth meet in a
scissors-like bite, the nose is black, the round eyes are set well apart, and the long ears have abundant
feathering. The feet are well feathered, too, and compact in appearance. The colours are similar to the
Charlies.
The breed shares several behavior traits with the Charlies including being eager, affectionate and friendly
dogs with a happy disposition. But there are also health issues that affect the terms and conditions of the
dog insurance policy, said issues of which include cataracts, mitral valve disease, ear mites, malocclusion,
