1. FIFA 15: 9 International Teams
That Need To Be Added
http://www.gamebasin.com/news/fifa-15-9-international-teams-that-need-
to-be-added
The World Cup hangover is far from over and football fans across the globe are starving for another
fix of euphoric action following an enthralling tournament in Brazil, and with the new Premier
League season on the horizon, it won’t be long until we’re soaking up the drama once again. But if
that’s not enough to get your football crazed tastebuds tingling, then surely the upcoming release
of FIFA 15 will be. Despite the global success of one of EA’s highest grossing franchises, us FIFA
geeks still search day and night for the most insignificant of issues within the game. EA deliver a
more life‐like experience every year but my word they still take an overdose of raging insults from
players all over the world. Whoever said “It’s just a game” has clearly never had first hand
experience of the torment and anguish that comes with 90 minutes of FIFA. So, if we invest hours
of our time obsessing so passionately over FIFA, then why do we go out of our way to slate the
same game we fill with such hype? And how can EA make sure that niggling problems are nipped
in the bud once and for all. Another chapter in the famous FIFA franchise will, like many before,
bring substantial changes and additions. One aspect that dedicated gamers long for is an expansion
in playable teams, and with the World Cup still fresh in our mind, what improvements could we
possibly see on FIFA’s international stage? Here we take a look at nine nations that need to be
added to FIFA 15…
2. 9. Algeria
FIFA 14 offers 33 licensed leagues and 47 international squads, but we crave more. Coming into
this summer’s World Cup, it was teams such as Ivory Coast and Ghana who flew the flag of African
football, but one team that slipped way under the radar is Algeria, who certainly surprised one or
two teams throughout the tournament. Currently ranked 24th in the world, and the number one
African nation, Algeria have forced their way to the front of the queue for selection on the game.
A last minute defeat against Belgium and an extra‐time collapse vs the eventual champions
Germany, were the only black marks on an otherwise successful outing. Players such as Valencia’s
Sofiane Feghouli, the scorer of Algeria’s first World Cup goal in 28 years, and Tottenham’s rising
star Nabil Bentaleb have unquestionably increased the stock of the African nation since the release
of FIFA 14 and it would be fully deserved if their progress landed them a spot in the next edition
later this year.
8. Serbia
3. Despite some electrifying performances in World Cup qualifying, most notably 6‐1 and 5‐1 victories
over Wales and Macedonia respectively, Serbia just fell short behind fellow European side, Croatia.
Now 31st in the official FIFA rankings, Serbia will be looking to rebuild in time for Euro 2016. With
such an array of gifted footballers, it comes as somewhat of a shock that Serbia are left out of the
game. The host of talent they possess continues to grow rapidly across Europe, including a number
of Premier League stars such as Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic and Nemanja Matic. And now,
breakout youngsters such as Liverpool’s Lazar Markovic and Roma sensation Adem Ljajic have
breathed new life into the squad, and with this in mind, knowing that gamers want to play with the
best teams available, the best everything available in fact. It would be a somewhat easy decision
to bring them into the next instalment.
7. Nigeria
4. A round‐of‐16 exit to France in the World Cup saw Nigeria rocket ten places to 34th in the FIFA
rankings, a win over Bosnia & Herzegovina and a narrow 3‐2 defeat to beaten finalists Argentina
capped off a memorable 14 months for the Super Eagles. Back in February 2013, Nigeria picked up
the African Nations trophy for only the third time in their history, and even though they’ve
experienced such success, they’ve found themselves frozen out by EA. Nigeria failed to make the
cut in the previous editions, however the new three‐pronged attacking force of Musa, Emenike and
Victor Moses poses devastating pace and power, something the majority of FIFA players feed on.
Surely recent triumphs will be enough to earn them a spot in FIFA 15, we hope.
6. Ukraine
5. The arrival of Ukrainian football has been a long time coming in the FIFA franchise, as one of the
few licensed leagues still to make an appearance, with teams such as Dnipro and Dynamo Kyiv,
who always make an impact in European club competitions, maybe this year could be their time.
Current league champions, Shakhtar Donetsk have featured in previous games but the eventual
step that FIFA need to take is making Ukraine a playable nation, exciting talent such as Yevhen
Konoplyanka and Andriy Yarmolenko would take kindly to those of us in the FIFA community who
favour the flashy and skilful players. Entering Ukraine into the game will hopefully go hand in hand
with the addition of their Premier League clubs, expansion is demanded by the masses and this
seems like a no brainer for the creators of FIFA 15.
5. Japan
6. Japan stormed into the World Cup on the back of a hot winning streak, but in an surprising turn of
events, they managed just one point and two goals throughout the group stage as they crashed
out along with their entourage of hyped but overly polite fans. Despite the colossal disappointment
this summer, there is no doubt this Japan side is littered with flair. Key players such as Shinji Kagawa
and Keisuke Honda are undoubtedly two of the fan favourites in the world of FIFA, Honda for a free
kick anyone? 45th in the world rankings may be heavily unflattering, but what Japan may find
slightly more insulting is that 12 of the 47 international squads in FIFA 14 are ranked lower than
the Asian stars, so it seems as if form has little to no significance when FIFA choose national teams,
and hopefully Japan can be fortunate enough to slip back into the frame.
4. Costa Rica
7. We ran out of superlatives to describe what was one of the stand‐out performances in the Brazil,
without a doubt the shock package of the tournament was Costa Rica, considered whipping boys
of their group, but returning home as heroes after a heartbreaking penalty defeat in the quarter‐finals
at the hands of Netherlands. Gallant efforts from the Costa Rican shot‐stopper Keylor Navas
and Arsenal wonder‐boy Joel Campbell inspired a number of terrific displays, even Fulham’s Bryan
Ruiz, who struggled to adapt to the Premier League, reminded us of his vast capabilities. Costa Rica
now sit proudly at 16th in the world rankings, the highest they’ve ever been. In fact they’re the
highest ranked team not in the game, something FIFA will be wise to eradicate, as gamers will look
to repeat the success of the North American side in FIFA 15.
3. Bosnia And Herzegovina
8. A third minute own goal sparked a disastrous World Cup for the European side in their first
tournament finals appearance. Despite two opening defeats before a consolation victory against
Iran, Bosnia‐Herzegovina still find themselves ranked 19th in the world, one spot ahead of England,
no surprise there. The nation’s top‐scorer Edin Dzeko and Roma prospect, Miralem Pjanic coincide
perfectly to form quite a partnership on the field. Dzeko’s presence in the box and outstanding
heading ability makes him an all too deadly threat, and if there is one thing we all know as a
blueprint for easy goals in FIFA, it’s over‐powered headers. With that in mind, FIFA could cop an
easy success if they were to introduce Bosnia and Herzegovina into the upcoming game, plenty of
gamers will enjoy playing with the efficient attacking set‐up they boast.
2. Ghana
9. A late Cristiano Ronaldo goal brought an earlier than expected end to a woeful World Cup for the
once dominant African nation. Ghana have fallen to 38th in the rankings after ending the
tournament bottom of Group G. However, the poor run of form has not and will not change the
wish of many, Ghana have been a much desired team in FIFA for a number of years now. Players
like Kevin Prince‐Boateng, Asamoah Gyan and the Ayew brothers make up a nucleus of a star‐studded
team filled with quality from top to bottom. If there is only one international team added
to FIFA 15, then EA would do well to go with Ghana. The acquistion of the Black Stars would go a
long way to pleasing the people.
1. Croatia
10. They may be one place behind Costa Rica in the rankings, but Croatia are still undeniably the best
team pound‐for‐pound who aren’t on FIFA’s international roster. Midfield maestro’s Luka Modric
and the newly acquired Barcelona man, Ivan Rakitic provide excellent service for former Bayern
Munich striker, Mario Mandzukic. These three run the show for Niko Kovac and they certainly run
the experience for plenty of FIFA players. How a team with such an abundance of expertise aren’t
in the game is somewhat of a travesty, but with any luck, EA will act on this sooner rather than
later.
