2. Social Media Obsession
This Shows that we are living for the
internet, and try to follow expectations
This is ironic as Katy Perry is a very
prominent social media star and is saying
that there is an issue with this.
The females in the image are dressed in
old fashioned clothing but with modern
touches such as the see-through raincoat
and obviously, the iPad in their hands.
This is pastiche.
3. Gender separation
Gender separated ride – ‘rose’ gets less points than the
man despite doing the same thing – shows the audience
that the artist is a feminist and recognizes the gender pay
gap.
This follows hegemonic norms and traditional gender
views as the male is coming across more powerful than
the female as he scores a significantly higher score than
the female despite doing exactly the same thing.
The first screenshot is a shallow focus shot, as it is
important to show the color codes seats as well as the
people queuing up in genders.
All the women are in the pink seats, and the men in the
blue, however it is ironic that the man at the front is also
wearing a pink suit as this is stereotypical a female color.
4. Intertexual reference - 1984
1984 is a novel about a dystopian future which is
foreshadowing what our future may be like if we
keep following society rules and stereotypes. All
the people in the shot are walking really
synchronized, demonstrating that we are just like
robots and tend to follow society. All the people
have smiles plastered on their faces despite
having to queue for hours and hours showing
that is it just fake happiness.
This is a deep focus shot as the people are slightly
blurry however the ‘1984’ sign is clear.
5. Hyperconscious reality
Nuclear family expectations – synchronized
audience.
Shows that the expectation is to be apart of
a nuclear family and all the audience are
brain washed by this
However, the artist is wide awake
(hyperconscious) from the others and can
see that this is a wrong, outdated
expectation to create.
6. The greatest ride in the
world
The ‘greatest ride in the world' is simple a hamster wheel which Is
really not that great, showing that we will believe anything that we
are told as we are just like hamster's in cage.
Both a black man, and an Asian women try and beat the ride but
fall, however, the artist, a white women manages to beat it without
falling over. This shows that the world is full of prejudice and white
people have better advantages in life.
In the final screenshot, Katy looks very empowered and god like
because the shot is from a low angle looking up at her, and also
because there is a sunset in the background, making a golden glow,
connoting power.
