Foley Sage-Grouse Executive Summary
My bird project has come a long way from my original idea. At first I was going to
combine enduro-riding and bird watching. This plan soon proved to be impractical
considering the time period when I was doing this project. My region was the Rocky
Mountains and in this region they get vast amount of snow and inclement weather. This
does not go very well with riding a dirt bike. The whole point of this bird project was to
help a organization help a bird. This could be anything from helping with their website to
helping them with a project that would establish bird houses for migrating birds. It was a
challenge to do a project that would really help out because,I had the Rocky Mountain
region and I live in New Jersey. The time zone change made getting in contact with
people from that region very difficult. I could not get my original plan done so I had to
improvise and come up with a new project.
For my project, once I realized that my first idea would not work I had to change
it. So what I did was make a Facebook page. Since social media is the new form to get
out information to people, I viewed Facebook as the perfect medium to use. With over
millions and millions of people on Facebook, the possibility of someone seeing your
information is very high. I made a Facebook page about the Greater Sage-Grouse. It is
a bird in the Rocky Mountain region is has a declining population due to corporations
cutting down and paving over their habitat.
2. I did not get the anticipated response and likes of the page but I feel like I did
connect and get my message across. I got roughly 20 likes and some from people that I
do not even know. What I thought was pretty interesting is a man from Utah actually
found my page and liked it. This proves to me that my page was perfect in expressing
my ideas and concerns. It also showed that it was geared perfectly to my targeted
audience, the people of the Rocky Mountain region. It was hard to put information on
this page because as a fellow facebook user I know that when I see a long drawn out
page, I lose interest. I attempted to give them a brief summary of the Sage-Grouse and
what is happening to them. And if they want more detail then I linked my blog, which had
more info. My blog never got out there, so I had no likes or anything. I guess it was a
failed attempt at doing something good. The url for both my facebook page and my blog
are as follows:
