What is Aikido?
Aikido is a non-combative, non competitive martial art that is graceful and uses the energy of the attacker to
gain control and create a friend, rather than an enemy. Aikido training not only builds gross motor skills, but
also supports intellectual, social and emotional growth.
What is Unique about this class?
It is designed for children, teens and adults with disabilities. Martial Arts can be beneficial for everyone,
regardless of any physical or mental limitations one may have. Because the art of Aikido addresses multiple
aspects of the self, it can be of great benefit to those with Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADD and other de-
velopmental challenges, as well as to those with physical disabilities.
Who is the Instructor?
Steve Rockett is an instructor in Aikido at UC Riverside. He is a yondan (4th degree black belt). He has
trained in Aikido for over 25 years in the style of the late Shihan (Master) Saito Sensei of Iwama, Japan. Sen-
sei Rockett will work creatively and gently with the students and he asks that each student has a partner.
What to Expect from this Class?
Be prepared to have fun, make friends and to learn some self-defense. Students will wear a gi, the traditional
uniform of martial arts and will be given the opportunity to promote to higher levels of self-defense as they
learn new skills.
What is the Cost?
The cost is $20 per month or $50 for the entire course. We do have scholarships for students who are 18 years
and under and a few for those who are 19 years and older.
