6. WHY IS THE YSB A SAFE PLACE?
Overview
The Burrowes Street Youth Haven is a four-bed voluntary shelter that houses males and females ages 12
through 18. Individuals can stay at the shelter for a maximum of 21 days. The shelter serves youths who
are homeless or who are runaways, or those who are at risk of running away or being homeless due to
difficulties within their homes. Youths are welcome to access the shelter whenever they need a safe
place to stay, day or night. Caring, professional counselors are at the shelter 24 hours a day, 365 days a
year, to provide assistance for both residential or drop-in care. All services provided to youths and their
families are free and confidential.
8. BIG BROTHER BIG SISTER PROGRAM
Big Brothers Big Sisters places children in one-on-one mentoring relationships that center
on doing activities together. Volunteers meet with their Littles once a week for at least an
hour and must make a 9 to 12 month commitment. During their meeting times, Bigs and
Littles spend time doing fun activities such as playing at the park, going to the library, or
just hanging out and talking.
