1. Thrive is a workshop series that offers
your students a challenging and engaging
experience to explore issues of gender
identity. The workshops in this program
promote discussion of gender influences
and expectations, with an aim to identify
how these impact individual behaviour
and interpersonal relationships.
The workshop is designed for young people
to explore traditional notions of femininity
(Birdcage) and masculinity (Locker Room), and
the negative consequences and behaviours
that can result. This enables students to
discuss and challenge gender issues within
a safe group setting. A follow up combined
workshop is delivered, in which both groups
of students join together to discuss the
impact of gender expectations and support
each other to express their authentic selves.
These workshops are supported by the
Victorian Government.

2. Birdcage
The Birdcage workshop encourages young people to critically question expectations and
ideas about gender and influences of media. A forum is provided for students to explore
ideas and tools to improve body image, self-confidence and to help make positive choices.
In a safe and non-judgemental space, students are encouraged to share the side of them
that challenges conventional representations of gender.
Locker Room
The Locker Room workshop is designed for young people to explore traditional notions
of masculinity and some of the negative consequences and behaviours that can
result from this. The workshop allows students to recognise and challenge gendered
stereotypes in the community empowering them with positive decision making skills.
Thrive - Combined Workshop
The combined workshop brings students together in a 90 minute session to share what
they have learnt from their full day experiences about the impacts of gender stereotypes
and provide an environment for honest conversations.
WORKSHOP THEMES
Reach’s youth-led workshops create safe and non-judgemental spaces where students
can express themselves and connect with peers and positive role models. In this way,
Reach workshops and activities promote positive wellbeing in young people.
Underpinning the design and delivery of all workshops is a framework of professional
wellbeing support, to ensure emotional safety and positive youth connections.
Reach’s professional Wellbeing team connects with your school’s wellbeing staff prior
to workshops, to understand the needs of individuals and the whole class/cohort,
and to enable responsive follow-up. The team will also assist staff to determine the
appropriate follow-up for individual students if necessary.

“I liked it because it really
made me think about things
in my life. When I walked in
I was standing with a group
of people I knew nothing
about - when we walked out,
the group seemed smaller
and more connected.”
